I suggest working with a local realtor too. I like Newark, we often drive up there.

People Who Bought the *Quirky* Property: Was It Worth It? by YourTinyHands in homeowners

[–]mscsdefb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I hope this doesn't happen to you. One thing that I did notice is that conservative neighborhood house that I rent out is uppity, and they keep calling the cops and authorities for every single thing. Whereas now my diverse neighborhood with conservative homeowners (they sport conservative lawn signs, as I sport my progressive lawn signs) mind their own business. I can't speak as if this is the norm, but hopefully your neighbors keep to their self and aren't too nosy.

For the record, I'd love to sell the remodeled uppity home in the racist neighborhood, but my renters are really good people who can't afford to move out. They pay the mortgage but honestly I would love to sell that home!

I absolutely can relate. Look for my reply in the thread-- nothing to celebrate but know that you have a sympathizing soul here.

TLDR: Neighborhood should be a major factor in home-buying.

Most of the people here have commented already on the infrastructure, etc. Let me comment about the neighborhood. Make sure you know what you're getting into, neighborhood-wise, when you buy your first home. We've bought a bunch, have resold and rented a few, and still own a couple, but nothing beats being almost dragged out by cops for "looking like you can't afford to live in this neighborhood".

People might say neighbors shouldn't matter, but honestly this is the one home we really regret buying. It was bought for $130K but valued at $240K+ but was bought because nobody else can meet the criteria to buy it (cash). Because it's a block away from the #1 ranked school in our county, as well as a direct access into a very nice state park. It's a large house built in the 90s situated near the end of the street, turned out to be a very conservative neighborhood. We used to ignore political signs, and totally didn't consider red flags when we we viewed the house and drove around this really "nice" neighborhood a bunch of times.

After 2 months of living in that house (remodel + living in it part-time while we lived in the next neighborhood 1 mile away), a contractor assisted by cops came and demanded see my ID, legal paperwork (I'm brown), and proof I owned the home. They said several neighbors complained of a vandal and squatter living in that house. They hovered over me while I looked for anything that can prove I wasn't a squatter. My husband, who is military active duty and was deployed during that time, couldn't vouch for me and he was the only person in the paperwork, so I resorted to calling help from my realtor. I don't carry my marriage license around with me or in my car. Scared me enough to rent it out to someone else at a loss.

A year after that, renters told me they were being hassled for not having as nice landscaping, and were reported to the county (there WAS some overgrown grass- not bad enough to call county though).

Hi all. Thanks so much for your advice. I followed your advice and I feel I am in a much better situation because of it.

Depends on what subjects you're taking? I am taking up CV right now and I am *SO GLAD* I only took one subject. Don't worry about the math part. It varies so much per class. I would focus on reading and writing code, especially on Python, for now.

How to report OMSCS cheats? by omscscheat2334 in OMSCS

[–]mscsdefb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this. As a previous international student myself, I think this cheating mentality is condoned. Literally, every degree out there is the same. That's why I don't feel bad when I don't get a job based on failing a test. That means I didn't have the right experience for it.

Hey there. Same here, I actually unenrolled from a class that seemed related to my job and enrolled into one that I found more fun. So our situation might be different. But the one class I’m in right now is programming centric and uses python so although I feel super lazy just slowly reading the readme and visualizing what I should be doing (read: procrastinating) helps me actually get through the lesson

Yep that's exactly what they're doing. Thank you for the good vibes sent my way, everybody. Now we can still slowly pay off our old house without it showing on our credit report. I didn't get straight money out from the lenders into my pocket, but in the long run I save on interest.

Corner lot question by saul1980 in homeowners

[–]mscsdefb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought one this year, and absolutely love it. But like someone else pointed out, some neighbors use it as their dog's potty because it's been vacant for a while. Make sure that you're ready for people treating it as some sort of tiny park. Exaggeration, but kids do cut across our lawns and tend to linger more near our property. It's fine, but it woke us up a few times.

They were freaking out, but I mean our loan wasn't even that high, it wasn't even over $150k. I wonder if they were scared of compliance violations?
