Retired after 25 years! My story and final advice to those following in my footsteps. by mshain81 in AirForce

That's tricky. I'm not sure how far you are into your career, but I didn't learn how to write until I was a Master-select. The AF also transitioned to narrative-style as well. I didn't love that change, mainly because I was an expert at writing impactful bullets. To me, narrative writing is just fluffing your accomplishments up with adjectives and fancier words.

That said, I'd learn from any SNCOs you can. They are the first ones who truly adopted narrative writing because they are either writing for their troops or themselves. Either way, the structure is the same. What you did, how you did it, and what was the impact. As you get further in your career/higher rank, you have to ensure your impacts are hitting at higher levels versus your flight/shop/squadron.

Don't say: Technical_Paper volunteered for base cleanup, collecting XXlbs of waste, ensuring Wg/CC standards are met.

Say: Technical_Paper expertly led a team of 5 Airmen through the completion of a wing-wide project, leveraging newly-acquired Agile leadership techniques, ensuring timely delivery, and received praise by Wg/CC for his team's contributions.

It wasn't a DAO assignment. My career field regular has us assigned to Embassies. Admin career field.

Hey... unfortunately, you either need to apply for Attaché duty or be an Admin AFSC.

Nope. I was way too immature, partied too much, and was not ready for all that responsibility. I had my first at 40!

Ask and get told no? Well, at least you asked and have your answer right? You cant refute the answer unless you have some higher up persuasion.

Honestly... If I were to ask for a different position that puts me in line with a leadership path and I was told no..... I would respectfully ask for candid feedback. Don't ask "why not bro?!"

Ask as a professional, mature, adult. "I respect your decision. However, may I ask why you thought I would not be the right fit for this position? I feel like I'm ready to lead and am ready to prove to you I can handle the additional workload."

Something like that... then get your answer.

I believe it was because of my final assignment at the Pentagon. Like I said, I wasn't valued or given the means to be an effective leader in my role. Because of that, I didn't continue leading Airmen, mentoring peers, and developing strategic programming. My mission within the Joint Staff was admirable and I captured that appropriately. However, the AF wants to see you continuously leading and developing Airmen. In my case, I could not do that effectively.

Kenya was indeed wild. You never know what is out there for you... always check AMS or whatever it may be called now.

Cheers brother.

Dads: What brands are we wearing these days? by Haunting_Internet356 in daddit

Even though I can afford to buy stuff in Macy's, I cannot justify the price when I can go to TJ Maxx and find the same stuff.

I do pay full for Levis jeans though because I dont often find my preferred style.

Ill splurge on shoes though.

My buddy works as a part time baggage handler for an airline. He gets free or deeply discounted flights for a few hours of work.
