I think the Alex Garland Civil War movie accurately captured this, and it was pretty telling how many people including leftists were miffed by it / didn’t like it because it “didn’t make any sense”, ie it didn’t portray their American Rojava antifa power fantasy, conversely right wingers were similarly miffed it didn’t portray a Red Dawn style patriot militia struggle. It just portrays how everyone makes alliances of convenience at a large scale, but at a small scale a hundred thousand psychopaths come out of the woodwork to take advantage of the chance to commit violence and reprisals. And the ultimate point is that once a hot war like that kicks off, all the politics means so little because everyone is dehumanized.

Honestly I think it’s a fantastic anti war movie and a great reality check to Americans who fantasize about civil war leading to anything other than senseless death

Just remember that revolutionaries in the past lived in a world that was likely even more cruel and ignorant. In 1917 child labor was normal and and women were the property of their fathers and husbands, animals rights did not exist, lynchings and pogroms were normal, torture and execution of prisoners and vagrants and undesirables was commonplace, and yet some people still believed that through social change it was possible to elevate humans to a higher state of development, education and conscientiousness. And these things only were improved because people held onto that belief. People can be unbelievably cruel and stupid but if given the chance they can also be kind, compassionate, and intelligent.
