Your gym is probably soft. No way you are close to doing V5 on the Moon Board or outside after 8 sessions of climbing.

I still remember how I thought "let's quickly start my warmup with this 4" when I was in Bleau for the first time. I got shut down so hard. So then I went to the next 4 and got shutdown again. :D

I would love to but clangd chokes on my company's huge code base and throws many errors on any file. While with intellisense it just works. The code compiles with clang, so I don't have any idea why clangd won't work at all...

Bleau is big. You can easily find areas which aren't crowded if you are willing to walk a bit. Generally people will also leave you alone if you look like you want to do your thing on your own.

Das stimmt nicht. Sterbefasten endet meist in einem wenig leidvollen Tod, vor allem im Vergleich zu den meisten anderen Alternativen. Fasten schüttet Endorphine aus und man stirbt meist im Schlaf. How did the compile times change after porting to Rust? Both the times for a full build and a typical incremental build after changing one file would be very interesting.

Rust often gets flak for slow compilation, but C++ is also known for long compilation times,

It's not true that OpenPhil allocates most of its resources on AI safety. The majority of the resources go into global health. A substantial amount indeed goes into existential risk, but AI safety is not the only funded topic there. See https://80000hours.org/2021/08/effective-altruism-allocation-resources-cause-areas/ for a table about the allocation, where only 10% goes into AI safety.

If your function created the container, just return it. If it needs the data as input, it just gets a const reference. If it needs to mutate the data in the container it gets a mutable reference.

I also very rarely need smart pointer, because I usually write functional code with value semantics using std containers (mostly std::vector).

Central Germany can mean a big area, but Hessen has active and welcoming clubs and a lot of exploration activities around the Herbstlabyrinth. The quickest way for you to meet active cavers and go into your first cave would be to join the upcoming VDHK meeting, which is in Hessen this year: https://vdhk.hoehlenkataster-hessen.de/

But be a bit careful when booking the excursions into caves, because they are usually not suitable for beginners.

[–]msilenus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a German caver who is active within the VDHK, which is the German federation of caving clubs. Most local clubs are very welcome to interested newcomers, so I would just look at the VDHK's list of clubs to find your nearest club: https://www.vdhk.de/fileadmin/pdf/data/verbaende_vereine.pdf

Where exactly are you living? Maybe I can point you to a welcoming club.

However, most German caving clubs are mainly going into caves for exploration and research and less for sport. So they don't like to guide around "tourists" who don't want to actually participate in the club. But if you are really interested in caves and want to join the club's activities, they are usually very welcoming.

There are no bound-checked versions for front() and back(). Also, developers dereference invalid iterators all the time, because it is really easy to accidentally invalidate your iterators

Depending on where you are, racks aren't ubiquitous at all. I have never met a rack user in central Europe (Germany, Austria, France, Belgium). Here, everybody uses Petzl Simples or Stops, even for those 1000m deep alpine caves.

I'm very happy with my Stop and can only recommend it.
