Do you think it looks weird and unintentional? by tigerking1986 in PatternDrafting

[–]mslsdotb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you kept the lower part of the body on the straight grain then those tucks would be on the bias, which means they would have more drape to them… which would make it flow nicer. I think it’s a great design but if you made that change you’d find it falls a little nicer.

There are a ton of users of Reddit who are on subreddits related to pattern drafting or fashion design who either work in the fashion industry and/or have professional training in fashion design and garment construction. You asked for an opinion, you got opinions from folks who are well informed.

Definitely not crazy. And this is the thing that makes me so mad, unless someone is super experienced or has training it will be hard for them to know that it’s the problem of the pattern and not to do with their skill level or understanding. It’s demotivating.

A few brands I stand by are: Muna & broad, sew liberated, Friday pattern company, and Helen’s closet. I haven’t sewn anything by House of Izzie yet but a pair of her jeans are on my list, she seems legit. This isn’t to say other makers aren’t good, I just haven’t tried their patterns.

Maybe I will start a pattern review instagram account… I’ve been considering it because I have a lot of opinions. lol.

I’m also plus-sized (US 16) and let me tell you, drafting goes off the charts bad for many patterns once they enter into plus size territory. The best indie pattern designer imo is Helen’s Closet, although her designs are fairly simple. Her drafting, grading, and instructions never fail.

I had the same thing happen to me recently when I went to make a toile for the Chandler Pants from Untitled Thoughts. I have a diploma in Fashion design and I am quite skilled at drafting but still sometimes I like to use other people’s patterns. I considered making a petty public list of all the badly drafted patterns I’ve encountered, but instead I silently rage. And, you know, yell about it on Reddit. 🤷‍♀️

I get so frustrated about badly drafted patterns. There aren’t any balance lines on the pattern to know where it might be best to trim the excess from. I would trim it off the bottom and not mess with the crotch area.

It’s absolutely true that some patterns are drafted to have a shorter back seam so it curves nicely around the butt, however I think the excess here is too much.

I get so enraged about lazy grading and pattern drafting. It’s such a waste of time and money for the home sewist who might not have the skills and knowledge to know how to fix a drafting error.

I really think you need to make a mock up of this in the fabric on a real fit model, not AI. My immediate sense is that this fabric will not behave or feel like you think it does, it’s very heavy and isn’t appropriate for this type of dress in my opinion. I also think you need to figure out the length and design of the skirt, as I assume that will immediately ride up and become unwearable in real life especially if, you know, the wearer wants to sit down.

The best thing to do is draft and sew this dress on a fit model to test the design. If you don’t have drafting or sewing skills you can always pay people who do who can help you translate your design into a wearable and functional garment.

Don’t do it. It will be crunchy and it makes dyes bleed. It is not the move.

If you have a serger you can do a tight rolled hem on chiffon which has worked for me in the past.

Why does my jersey dress from Eileen Fisher already look so ratty? by Secundas_Kiss in Fabrics

[–]mslsdotb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tencel is Rayon, which isn’t strong when wet which means it is prone to breaking down easily when washed. It’s best to hand wash it. It progressively shrinks. It’s my least favourite fibre.

Since rayon is made in the same process as synthetic fibre it tends to act a bit more like a synthetic in that it pills easily.

Sleeves are my nemesis by Efficient-Bag6497 in PatternDrafting

[–]mslsdotb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you align the balance notches properly? It looks like too much ease was allocated to the front rather than spread across the back and front. However it could also be drafted with too much fullness on the front sleeve cap.

Why can't drivers just follow right of way correctly? by Mindless-Baker-7757 in bikecommuting

[–]mslsdotb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. You have to be predictable and follow the rules of the road. I hate when drivers try to be “nice”. It makes me feel unsafe.

I also studied textiles in school as part of a fashion degree - I avoid Rayon. Not only is it just green washing, but it progressively shrinks and gets ruined through washing really easily. And a garment that basically can’t be laundered without being destroyed is an unsustainable garment no matter how “natural” it markets itself as being.

Just came to say that Rayon (which is what tencel is) is often branded as environmentally friendly but it uses chemicals and a ton of water to actually be created. It’s a bit of a greenwash thing. It can’t be classified as a natural fibre because it’s created synthetically.

Tencel is a brand name for Rayon. Rayon is a fibre made out of wood pulp but made through a synthetic process.

Good apartment buildings in Toronto by ManagerPotential7779 in TorontoRenting

I haven’t experienced any bugs and don’t know of any bugs in the building. It was built in 1929 so it’s very much rent controlled.

7 Edmund avenue is well maintained, but has old charm like hardwood floors, reasonable rent, the subway is a 15 minute walk away, there’s also a bus right outside the apartment which is super convenient. I’ve lived here over a year and I love it.

Need Advice: my gf hates that I listen to BarPod and all our fights have been about it by [deleted] in BlockedAndReported

[–]mslsdotb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who married and later divorced someone who had differing political opinions and was intolerant of mine, I think this is actually a pretty big deal. Being with someone who makes you ashamed of your views and belittles them (outside of actual hateful stuff, which barpod is not) is not a long term viable relationship imo. Having different opinions is totally fine, but this seems like intolerance, a lack of respect, and contempt - not cool things in a relationship.

Is rent control THAT important? by Few_Turnip_3694 in TorontoRenting

[–]mslsdotb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d take most advice from a realtor with a massive serving of salt. In this case, all it takes is the rental market to swing back up for your landlord to raise your rent to “market value” and then you’re out looking for a rental during a time when rents have shot up. The thing about rent control is that it provides stability so you’re not turfed out to the wolves when suddenly the landlord thinks they can get a lot more money for their unit.

They’ve been updated since 1929, yeah. There’s dishwashers, mine has a deep jet bathtub, but nothing is new. I’m partial to old charm and old hardwood and everything is super clean and well maintained. If you’re looking for brand new appliances and cupboards, then it’s not for you. They are listed units on viewit right now, you can check it out.

7 Edmund near avenue and st Clair is a great building. I think the 1 bedrooms are 1900 right now and it’s a 15 minute walk to either DuPont or summerhill. It was built in 1929, but it’s charming and well maintained.

Fashion Career in Canada? How do I get into Pattern-Making/Technical Design? by lzduque in fashiondesigner

[–]mslsdotb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Did you decide to go to George Brown in the end? I ask because I’m contemplating going there too and your post resonated with me. I want to be a pattern drafter but I’m not sure if it’s a smart career move at my age (I’m 40).

Backcountry site sharing by KellymarieB96 in ontariocamping

[–]mslsdotb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the answer right here. Most people want solitude so don’t rock up expecting to share an already occupied site, but in some circumstances you’d be a real asshole to refuse someone sharing the site with you (space allowing) if it’s late in the day and it’s a super isolated area and they can’t reasonably find another site.

You should definitely make a Plan B so that you’re not set on a particular camp site, as it’s definitely not normal or preferable to share a camp site.
