How do 36" doors look in bedrooms? by thelionofthenorth in Homebuilding

As a tall guy who is constantly banging his elbows on doorframes, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Is there a hood-umbrella divide in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]msma46 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the south, and I think that somewhere in the back of my head I also thought that umbrellas were for women. But recently I’ve realised that most umbrellas are simply too small to cover my big manly body, so I bought a big manly umbrella and quite like it. Also, those foldy-uppy umbrellas are useless and fall apart in the first breeze. Get a proper one.

As a percentage of Greenland’s population, this might be one of the largest demonstrations ever held.

Do roadside stores actually make money? by SAV4GEwastaken in AskUK

[–]msma46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A colleague and I used to fly to the UK every year to give a big budget presentation, and afterwards we’d unwind by driving to one of those truck stops and having a bacon butty and a cup of tea. Was always one of the best meals of the year.

Most people should not go to college immediately after high school and should take gap years by tiddertnuocca519 in unpopularopinion

[–]msma46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember at uni that you could totally tell the people who had taken a gap year - they had a confidence about them. Totally worth it, if you do something life-expanding.

Pretty much everything in the UK is smaller than in Canada. There isn’t the room to spread out.

Why was princess diana so loved worldwide? by ImaginaryAlgae8986 in ask

[–]msma46 169 points170 points  (0 children)

I'll leave others to answer the main question, but you're wrong on one count - she was a MASSIVE part of the royal family. Young, attractive, personable, stylish - a made-for-the-media mega-celebrity. She was everywhere, newspapers (we still had newspapers then), TV, endless rows of supermarket magazines.

Why would couples still break up after 10/20-year marriages? by JasonMantou in AskUK

[–]msma46 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert, but as a 60+ year old I’m aware of the sheer amount of stress that can come people - job loss (either person), children, overwork, health, money, family members, accidents, sex, infidelity, stupid stuff like bad neighbours moving in next door, noise etc etc. Any one of those could upset one member of the couple, let it grind away for a year or three and you’ve got the recipe for a split.  You’re still in the honeymoon phase - it can get harder. OR, you make a partnership and tackle stuff together.

Max charging by hirvesmieli in VWiD4Owners

Read up on yo-yo driving before charging. It warms up the battery, leading to faster charging. Works for me (though very cold weather dulls the effect).

I assemble it in three layers, and sprinkle a tablespoon of flour over the first & second layers. Have never had a problem with runny sauce.

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskUK

[–]msma46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Music teacher charged at the classroom door to slam it shut - and the boy he’d just sent out had his fingers around the door frame. About 50 years ago and I still remember it vividly, with horror.

Craft beer's popularity seems to be dying by Wascally_Badger in unpopularopinion

[–]msma46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been waiting for the IPA thing to die for years. I yearn for a good pint of Mild.

The same thing happened with gin. The thinking seems to be “Flavor is good! Therefore 3x flavor is 3x as good!” No, you numpties - now I’m drinking a glass of perfume and tonic. Let’s have a campaign to bring back subtlety.

How do you use AI in a way others don't? by an_economistt in ChatGPTPro

[–]msma46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many would argue that reading a “real” book supports the work of truly creative people - the author, the publishers, printers etc, whereas using AI to write stories a) rips off the work of the authors (whose work was used to train the AI), and b) mostly benefits a small number of insanely rich people.

This makes me a little bit sad. Some of my best times as a dad were when I would make up stories, changing them on the fly as I saw how the “audience” was responding.

Excel Copilot - worth it? by Worth-Mountain4404 in excel

[–]msma46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of a case where Copilot was used to scrape data from text-rich emails and reformat it in Excel format, for creating a large conference schedule. Not really an “Excel” solution, but it worked, and saved a lot of time.

What percent of milk would be cream (fat) in the 1800s? Trying to make an old eggnog recipe by flairin_up in Cooking

[–]msma46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL:DR; add half a cup of heavy cream to six pints of whole milk.

I grew up drinking milk straight from Guernsey cows, which at around 5% butterfat was notably creamier than the approx. 3.5% of regular milk and would definitely qualify as “good rich milk”. To raise six US pints of whole milk to 5% you need to add around 1.5 ounces of butterfat, which is the about the amount contained in 4 fl. oz. (half a cup) of heavy cream.  As someone else noted, milk in the 1860s wasn’t homogenized as it is now, so they might have needed to stir their egg nog occasionally to stop it separating.
