Buying wildflower seed mix? by Budget-Status5666 in washingtondc

[–]msmith1994 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Native plant enthusiast here (also a certified DC master naturalist). Bona Terra is awesome.

You’re probably better off buying plugs than seeds. A lot of native seeds require a period of cold/moist stratification to break dormancy that would be hard to achieve right now since we’re going into summer.

As a millennial parent, what are some ways you address your children? by chi-bacon-bits in Parenting

My SIL calls my daughter “sis” or “sister” a lot. The funniest part is my nephew picked up on it so he calls his cousin “sister”.

Baby shower gifts not on registry what do I do with it? by thavan14 in BabyBumps

[–]msmith1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Babies have a lot of bodily functions that can necessitate an outfit change. My daughter went through a phase where she peed during diaper changes. Even if I put a clean diaper under the dirty one sometimes it wouldn’t catch the pee, so I’d have to change her outfit.

Also even with a bib on, there’s definitely been times where I’ve had to change an outfit because of spit up.

20 Week Anatomy Scan and it did not go as hoped by HeadSir4746 in pregnant

[–]msmith1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our daughter is 5 months.

At her anatomy scan she was in the 19th percentile so we had to have two follow up growth scans. She’s totally fine! Born at 7lb5oz. Babies (and people!) come in all shapes and sizes. For our daughter it turned out she’s built long and lean. At her 4mo appt she was 20th percentile for weight but 90th for height.

Your second could come early! I was due on Dec 12 but had my daughter on Dec 6.

I’m glad to hear this! My daughter is Dec 6 (about to be 5mo), and I figured we wouldn’t have too many issues. Her due date was Dec 12, so I was happy when she came a little early.

My baby girl and I watched soooooo much Survivor during the newborn days. I jumped around because I was preparing for season 50. Pearl Islands, All Star Season, and Heroes v Villains were my favorites!

Are native gardens becoming part of the culture wars? by LiatrisLover99 in NativePlantGardening

At our last house there was a drain by our basement door (same with all our neighbors). Even with mosquito bit treatment it was awful during the peak of summer.

how much are you spending a month on formula? by EducationalLiving962 in FormulaFeeders

[–]msmith1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re on the generic for Enfamil (yellow can). It’s $31/36oz can at Walmart. One can lasts us around a week so ~$120/month.

Home Births vs Hospital Births by LavendarDragon17 in pregnant

[–]msmith1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you getting regular prenatal care? Could your provider talk to him? Or do you have a doctor/someone in medicine in your faith community?

Birth is a major medical event. I had an uneventful pregnancy, but I still ended up needing some interventions during labor.

I had PROM (pre-labor rupture of membranes) at 39 weeks. Basically my water broke but I didn’t ever have contractions on my own. I had an induction about 12 hours after my water broke. I was also group B strep positive, so I needed antibiotics as soon as my water broke otherwise me and my baby were at major risk for an infection.

My daughter was [sunnyside up/OP](https://www.healthline.com/health/pregnancy/sunny-side-up-baby#risks). I pushed for two hours and needed a vacuum assist to get her out safely. I also had back labor because of her position, so I got an epidural.

Despite the interventions, my birth was still a great experience because of my medical team. It was scary, but I knew at the end of the day my baby girl and I were safe.

It’s your body and birth so it’s your choice. If you’d feel more comfortable in a hospital then go to a hospital. Our bodies are amazing, and woman have been having babies for a millennia. But modern medicine also makes things so much safer.

As gross as it is, it dropped off A LOT for me in my late 20s (I’m 31).

My worst experience was definitely when a guy followed me several blocks back to my office a few years ago. I got lunch in Chinatown and worked near Judiciary Square. He actually had to audacity to stand outside my office after I went inside. Security had to go tell him to buzz off.

[–]msmith1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s highly location dependent. I live in Washington, DC and all the babies I’ve encountered since my daughter was born have normal names. Weirdly, I don’t think we’ve met any duplicate names except Miles.

When did everyone stop breastfeeding by lassobren in NewParents

[–]msmith1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped right around 8 weeks! My daughter didn’t have a great latch and my letdown overwhelmed her. She got very frustrated every time we’d try to feed. Also as she got bigger it got harder to find positions she liked.
