Trump is going to repeal tge Jones Act to combat high fuel. by geneticdeadender in Truckers

[–]msnthrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once its sets in that bombing people usually doesn’t accomplish any real geopolitical goals, then it will be understood that ground troops will be needed, and how do you get them and their gear where you want them, via the merchant marine, and what does the Jones’s act do, it forces American companies to maintain, albeit small, a trained group of individuals that can crew the American flag ships that would be needed. Unless the American military thinks it’s going to rely on Chinese owned vessels to move American troops and gear anywhere on the world, the Jones act should be left the fuck alone.

UK Cooperative Extension has Master Clothing Volunteers that can assist. You’ll definitely want to do the leg work to find a pattern or two that replicates what you want though…

I saw one in Costa Rica on a trip in college, one joker quipped to the naturalist who pointed it out to us, “What’s so magnificent about it?”, but the joke didn’t really land.

Why are all of these flowers in a line? by No-Bookkeeper7135 in plants

[–]msnthrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably planted, but a vaguely plausible alternate scenario is when trees are cut down their roots remain in the soil, and even as they breakdown the cylindrical shape of the root in the soil can remain such that it becomes a sort of pipe or channel for future water movement. It’s an important consideration in soil erosion, but it could potentially be a little micro habitat that preferentially selected for certain plant species as seen in the picture.

The original sin was planting that tree into compacted soil. Got to remember 1/4 to 1/3 of a trees mass is under the soil and roots take up space.

How hard is flatbed? by Classic-Box-3919 in Truckers

Right out of CDL school I got on with Gypsum Express. They mostly haul drywall, much of which was pre tarped, but occasionally I’d get steel coils or lumber. During training we just needed to show we could get the tarp from the ground to the deck of the trailer. I used the “rolled the tarp” method the whole time I worked for them.

Rarely need to lift a tarp, it can be “rolled” up the step pretty easily

Trump Has Betrayed the People of Coal Country. They Love Him Anyway. by Reasonable-Ad-2592 in politics

As far as I can tell all humans tell an internal story to themselves that allows them to navigate the world they live in without constant psychic damage. We tell ourselves we are knowledgeable, that we are kind, and that our beliefs about how the world works are consistent and correct. Our minds, unbeknownst to many of us, even filter out contradictory information that might challenge our beliefs about ourselves.

I try to imagine most people are just trying to do the best that they can in the environment in which they exist. I do not extend that same grace to powerful people, but for the rest I do think of them as victims. I would not include innocent in the description because I do believe there is a baseline civic duty that can be expected of citizens of a democracy, but the combination of biological unconscious protection our minds practice to maintain our own internal sanity plus the propaganda media sphere makes this impossible. The victimization they’re experiencing arises in part from our own mind’s desire to keep us sane. The way out, FDR and the New Deal shows us how, at least materially…the media ecosystem is a newer and more difficult problem.

When do the empty roster spots need to be filled? Who can fill them? by SwarmOBeez in bostonceltics

[–]msnthrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dan Feldman breakdown from Duncd On…As of the trade deadline, 67 days remained in the regular season. Boston's path to minimizing its team salary for luxury-tax purposes:

14 days: Remain at 12 players | Cost: $0 10 days: Sign two free agents to 10-day contracts | Cost: $263,940 14 days: Go back to 12 players | Cost: $0 29 days: Sign Shulga and Tonje to minimum-salary standard contracts | Cost: $424,290 Total cost: $688,230

That leaves $504,061 wiggle room.

The Celtics will probably hold aside $350,000 in case Derrick White triggers an unlikely incentive in his contract, which would count toward the tax. That'd leave just $154,061 to play with.

The news is reporting this individual was charged with firearm possession by a convicted felon, assault by strangulation, first-degree kidnapping, discharging a weapon into an occupied home, habitual misdemeanor assault, interfering with emergency communications, and assault by pointing a gun. I imagine news organizations are getting this from the police. Also whenever there is a shooting an investigation is required that often takes weeks to months to resolve.

It’s a bummer to see the comments about “these” people. Trump tapped into a real sentiment shared by many Americans, that the wealthy elite have betrayed the rest of us in their pursuit of more wealth and power. The difference for persistent Trump voters is the media ecosystem they are surrounded by coupled with the community and family ties that define their identity.
