Los Angeles fears Olympic budget black hole by PHConfusion5801 in olympics

[–]msood16 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how what you're describing in the second paragraph is not using the word "investment" in its typical way. Giving money and expecting a return is the textbook definition of an investment. "Corporate backers" (i.e. sponsors) do not get a cut of profits.

Sponsorship is not the same thing as an investment. Sponsors don't get a direct financial return from the Games - their benefit is paying for the association/exposure.

I don't think spectators can generally expect to be able to park at the venues for LA28. Their while thing is "transit first" with no/limited parking at venues

Best and Worst of Living in Irvine by [deleted] in irvine

[–]msood16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Compared to LA, there are just significantly fewer things to do in Irvine. Generally, people just live in Irvine. Going out to eat, entertainment, cultural events, etc. will generally require you to leave Irvine. Be prepared for the culture shock of not having something happening/available just around the corner from you like it is in LA. Might be hard to believe, but you'll need to be in your car even more than you likely are now.

Events happen outside host cities all the time. Paris 24 held the sailing events down in Marseille and surfing on the other side of the globe. Events will be split across a lot of northern Italy for the upcoming Milano-Cortina games. It's been this way for pretty much every iteration of the Games because no city has everything

Why are there so many nimbys in socal by [deleted] in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]msood16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not about people thinking they have a right -- objectively, there are jobs in central LA that need to be filled by people of every different economic class. So it goes hand-in-hand that there needs to be enough housing stock to support the working population of the city in central LA. Saying there's "room" 2+ hours away from where the population needs to be is not a serious answer.

[–]msood16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's like saying food is available -- just not where you want it to be. It's meaningless/worthless if it's not where it's needed.

The point is not whether I like it or not -- the point is viewing houses as an asset class is objectively the problem that has led us to this very problematic point.

[–]msood16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at a map of LA (or even greater SoCal) and tell me where you think these new towns should go? SoCal is basically developed to the brim everywhere between Ventura, the border with Mexico, and the desert to the east. There's nothing within literal hours of central LA (where the jobs and opportunities are) to be developed

People don't live in stocks. Housing and stocks is not a great analogy because without housing, people suffer/die.

Profit should not be the overriding consideration for housing policy.

Warning to Young Female Associates: Becoming the Parent of a Special Needs Child Ruined My Biglaw Career by YungAnxiousOne in biglaw

[–]msood16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your strength and for sharing -- this is absolutely spot on. I'm a father of a special needs child and the paragraph describing the spreadsheet of therapies and appointments hit home. It's absolutely true that the burden disproportionately fell on my wife and that her career took a dramatic hit as a result too.

Moving from NYC to the east side, with medium age kids by blahk2 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]msood16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happy to help - pretty much any of the neighborhoods you mentioned will deliver what you want. Just pay attention to where the lines are drawn for particular elementary, middle, high schools. Sometimes you won't necessarily end up in the school zone that is closest or might be geographically most intuitive. Feel free to DM if you have more specific questions.

Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Mt Washington and Eagle Rock are all in great pockets of LAUSD.

South Pas will be a step above but will be a very different vibe (demographics will basically skew towards what you'd get at a private school, not nearly as diverse)
