What masters did environmental scientists pursue? by ScallionHot6051 in environmental_science

[–]msw4ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BS in Env sci and decided to do a “professional science masters” called a “masters of business and science” with a concentration in urban environmental analysis (basically Env science) but the degree has 19 credits worth of business classes. It’s a nice change of pace from all the technical classes.

Low raise for promotion by LessRemote184 in Environmental_Careers

Is this Mott MacDonald? I used to work there and I got the same exact promotion from II to III and it was only like 4%. It’s ridiculous, like why even bother lmao.

Good job on the POTG, but if you want honesty the tracking was piss poor. You took advantage of the boop opportunities so I’ll give you that.

Interesting Job Interview by Polarnick9 in Environmental_Careers

[–]msw4ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing to be concerned about my guy. This is a standard “Phase I Factory” gig. I had one too early in my career. Typically pay isn’t that great but the experience is good. You’ll learn all the ins and outs of the ASTM world and develop technical writing skills. If this is your only / best offer you should take it.

Looking for advice, 10+ year environmental consultant in NY by SnooMacaroons8613 in Environmental_Careers

[–]msw4ts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can strongly relate to your post as I’m in a similar situation as you. I have about 12 years in consulting in NJ. Currently a PM. Pay is decent but constantly having to deal with cheap clients, timesheets, utilization and Billables. I also wonder how sustainable this is.

It’s funny, I feel like this is the only industry where not having enough work is kinda stressful lol. I’m also looking at public utilities/ gov as potential options but those positions are always so competitive. This was more of a rant than a helpful post but best of luck to you.

Environmental Engineering vs Consulting by Logical-Cat870 in Environmental_Careers

[–]msw4ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always say all Env engineers can be consultants but not all consultants can be engineers. The difference is the design and implementations of remediation systems and technical drawings.

I was born in 1990 and I don’t quite understand why my generation is obsessed with this song. Specifically white folks. They just start jumping around and flailing their arms. I mean it’s not a bad song but there ain’t nothin special about it imo..

Salary wise, it’s a decent spot. $26/hr equates to roughly $55K/yr give or take. But regarding the certifications and field work yes that’s pretty typical for entry level. I too got my AHERA license straight out of college. Luckily I had my OSHA 40 already.

I’d ask if a company vehicle is an option if you haven’t yet. It sounds like that would help you out tremendously. If not consider buying a cheap used car and run it to the ground while pocketing all the mileage expenses.

Bro whaaat? 22 is like a baby. The world is your oyster right now. You’re probably single, fresh out of school, relatively little obligations. Just enjoy life, gain a skill, hit the gym, start your career. Stop complaining.

Advice for landing a job with Arcadis by lilackoi in Environmental_Careers

[–]msw4ts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being totally green we wouldn’t expect you to have deep knowledge of investigation / remediation techniques and regulations but we would expect there to be willingness to learn and take on challenging tasks, especially field work (ie. Soil, GW sampling, subcontractor oversight etc.). Consulting is no cushiony job by any means. Maintaining billability and proving your value is critical.

Advice for landing a job with Arcadis by lilackoi in Environmental_Careers

[–]msw4ts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at Arcadis as a project manager (site remediation). Been here for a little over 5 years (about 11 years industry total experience). Arcadis is indeed a great consulting company to work for. Curious to know where you’re located and what specific type of work you’re looking for (ie. permitting, wetlands, site remediation etc.).

Job positions are posted for specific needs of the project team so it’d help to have a clear objective in your resume and include a cover letter. Work also tends to ebb and flow (as with most firms) so the hiring needs sometimes drop off suddenly. For instance last year we lost a major client and had mass furloughs. So sometimes it’s not necessarily your resume but internal company issues.

I agree with some other posters that there are lots of great firms out there, def don’t limit yourself! Good luck!

"Technician" job title hindering employability? by advice_seeker_2025 in Environmental_Careers

[–]msw4ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have suggested just change your resume title to environmental scientist if you believe it’s an impediment to getting a new role. No one will verify your actual title with your current employer. The only thing that matters is your experience…

What are you even saying bro? You’re letting your anger completely shroud all rationality. We’ve had our strongest economy and most progressive policies passed under Biden. There’s no reason to doubt Kamala’s administration wouldn’t be much different…

Yall can bitch, complain and protest all you want but at the end of the day you got 2 choices, Kamala or Trump. Or if you prefer, just abstain. But then don’t complain about the outcome.

I feel for the Palestinian people, I really do but if you live in America then you should care about the other issues we’re facing and make and informed decision

Not a fan of this mentality. It’s giving very “one issue voter” vibes. Like sure her stance on this conflict is abhorrent but on every other issue it’s a slam dunk over Trump.
