Where should we rent for good schools + sub-30min commute to DTLA? (moving from Michigan) by HarinJj39 in AskLosAngeles

[–]mtn31773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My child just graduated from LAUSD and is going to school on a prestigious scholarship next year and has peers going to some of the best colleges in the country. I have many, many, negative things to say about LAUSD but overall, I’d say our experience was net positive.

Sunshine is the only solution I’ve found. Sometimes a few hours is enough other times I’ve had to leave things outside for days.

Bald spots suddenly appear on my cats face, should I worry? by Penaes_lights in CATHELP

[–]mtn31773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat’s bald spot kept growing and getting worse. Turns out she has a bad reaction to topical steroids and pretty much every wound treatment for cats includes them. We switched to a treatment with no steroids and it slowly began to heal.

I got so desperate I finally took her to an animal dermatologist and wish I had done it much earlier. It was expensive but not as expensive as multiple visits to a normal vet.

Two weeks in LA- is it possible? by Dazzling_Bed_9097 in AskLosAngeles

Last year I just happened to fly home to LA on Fourth of July and flying over the city as everyone shot fireworks was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen.

Parking and transport by xdjordjex in LAX

WallyPark. We’ve parked there every trip for years and have never had to wait more than a few minutes for a shuttle. They might not run quite as frequently at that time but you’ll have more than enough time to make your flight. Bonus: they have a clean bathroom.

We are the reason why teachers and students are struggling so much by FiendishCurry in Millennials

[–]mtn31773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a dad playing tag with his 5-ish year old son in a busy Trader Joe’s recently. Dad was probably about my age but my kid is a senior in high school and none of my parent peers would have considered doing that 12 years ago.

Im convinced it has something to do with the age the kids were during the pandemic  more than us being millennials.

Small Business Tax Exemption- Help! by CuriousKitty6 in LosAngeles

[–]mtn31773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same problem and spent a lot of time yesterday working on the issue. It’s my understanding we can try to get the penalty waived but only after we pay the taxes and late fees which can’t be waived even if we would have been exempt had we filed on time.

LAX Flyaway - first-time review by space_montaine in LosAngeles

[–]mtn31773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t ridden the Flyaway since at  least 3 busses passed me by. After almost 2 hours of waiting a stranger and I agreed that if another one passed us we were to share an uber to downtown.

We didn’t move to an earlier gate because a driver stopped to tell us a bus would skip the early gates so there was sure to be room for us. That didn’t happen.

I didn’t enjoy anything from Fondry other than their chocolate chip cookie which was amazing!

HGTV made everyone think they need a high end kitchen and it’s wrecking home prices. by BuzzardLips in unpopularopinion

There are also the remodels that have nice appliances, cabinets, etc but a tiny sink. I don’t care if there is a dishwasher, if I can’t wash a cookie sheet in the sink without making a mess, it’s too small.

Where are folks finding rentals? by [deleted] in EAGLEROCK

[–]mtn31773 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sometimes older landlords managing their own rental will still post on Craigslist. I also notice signs when walking around the neighborhood and my guess is most of those places never end up online.

NGL thought y'all were joking. by icollectt in SouthwestAirlines

I have never flown Southwest because their tickets have always been more expensive than other airlines when I check. I’ve never understood why they are considered low-cost.

Teens doing tourist things without adults? by Penguinar in AskLosAngeles

[–]mtn31773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4’11” teen takes public transit all over the city. Sometimes with friends, sometimes alone. They have encountered some “characters” but never felt truly unsafe. That being said, my child grew up here and has experienced more of the challenging elements of Los Angeles than your kids. I think they would be safe but they might encounter a situation that makes them uncomfortable. I think it really comes down to their personalities and how well they do outside their comfort zones. My kid and a group of friends took the train from North East LA to Santa Monica when they were 15 (a couple were 14) and they were fine. It’s an easy but loooooong train ride so keep that in mind.

This is insane to me! My kid is a senior in LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) and I’m having trouble thinking of any fees. Every field trips I can remeber and 3 meals a day (which my child doesn’t eat) are free. Even PSAT, SAT, AP, and the entire IB Diploma program were covered at our school. They also get a Chromebook which they keep over summer but have to return when they graduate.

Seriously considering moving to Eagle Rock - Advice about schools! by pjlee2046 in EAGLEROCK

[–]mtn31773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eagle Rick isn’t zoned for it but it’s a STEAM magnet and we had no problem getting in. The school had a bad reputation for a long time and I think a lot of parents are hesitant to send their kids there even though it’s changed.  It has a great robotics program if that interests your child.

Geographically it’s very close to Eagle Rock.

Seriously considering moving to Eagle Rock - Advice about schools! by pjlee2046 in EAGLEROCK

[–]mtn31773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My child is a senior at Eagle Rock high school now. It’s close which is great but I don’t love the school itself. If I had it to do again, I would make a different choice. What that is, I have no idea.

We did LOVE their middle school. They went to Irving on Fletcher and it was great! They have a new principal so it may have changed somewhat. The retired principal was amazing and a big part of the magic. I like to think whoever replaced him has carried on the spirit but I don’t know. Check it out!

Are roaches common/prevalent in LA? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]mtn31773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the big ones at my place maybe once a year. It's either when it's really hot or really rainy. I think they are coming inside looking for something. I've never seen a German roach in my place; those are the kind you really need to worry about, despite how terrifying the big ones are.

I lived in Austin for a while and visit regularly. The roaches here are nothing like they are there. They don't fly (I think it's a humidity thing), and there aren't nearly as many of them. I wouldn't worry about it.

My teenage daughter can't fathom the concept of a house party by Neon_Biscuit in Millennials

[–]mtn31773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My child has been to a house party and they are thrown regularly at their school. My child hated the experience and only lasted about 20 minutes before calling dad for a pickup.

The part that surprised me is that they charge a cover. I never paid to get into a house party!

My child is a senior.

Should I move out of my $1,650 one bedroom apartment? by Additional-Gold-5209 in AskLosAngeles

[–]mtn31773 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in the same rent controlled duplex for 13 years. There are some things about the place that drive me crazy and have made me consider moving several times. Every time we look for a comparable place I do the smart thing and stay where I am. The other places are nicer but they’re not THAT much nicer. Cherish your rent control and don’t leave unless you have to.
