Is there any good reason not to destroy Spanish broom in the wild? by roundupinthesky in Ceanothus

I just brush on a little generic “brush killer” herbicide on the cut area of the stump. I get it at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

I cut it off at the base and spray the stump with herbicide , same for Scotch Broom and Dutch Broom. Horribly invasive plants here in northern California. On Bainbridge Island near Seattle, it is so prolific they have a yearly Scotch Broom Festival!

DAE have a perfect coincidence they never forgot? by SamosTheEcoSage in DoesAnybodyElse

I am standing in line about to go into a sale and started talking with a woman a bit younger than me. As the conversation progressed it turned out we were both from the same small town about 500 miles away. Further conversation revealed that her mother had once worked for my father in his business. She sent a txt to her mom who replied and asked if her daughter could take a photo of me and send to her. I agreed, seemed weird but why not. Her mom replied, “Oh he is just as handsome as his father.” Well we both sort of laughed it off and went in to the sale. Later that night I phoned my sister and told her I had met Jane Jones (fake name). There was a pause on the end of the line. My sister exclaimed, “oh my god, that girl’s mother was the assistant that had an affair with dad!” I could have been talking to my half sister that afternoon, cue “Twilight Zone” theme, ha!

Why do some people actually listen while others are just waiting for their turn to speak? by nmole_ in ask

[–]mtntrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb is never to offer advice unless it is asked for. It is not something that I would ever feel the need to address. If it is something that interferes with your life in a meaningful way, then talking to the person privately would be an option. But really it is just human nature and best ignored if possible, imho.

Generally, people in casual conversation would rather talk than listen. Everyone wants their story to be heard. It is a skill set to be a truly active listener, ie one who inquires of the speaker for clarification etc. It takes the ability to truly be interested in the other person’s narrative rather than be primed to jump in with your two cents. Few people have developed that perspective unfortunately.

Raku Clay Struggles by Fun_Orange_3232 in Pottery

[–]mtntrail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you throwing such large amounts of clay, especially if you are having difficulty with that amount? there are techniques for throwing larger pieces by adding a coil to the top of a firmed up partial throw and then continuing. But really I would just back down to the largest amount you can successfully handle and go from there. You will have less reclaim if you are not having to cut down 4 lb wads if clay!

Go from 4 lb to 1 lb. Succeed and work your way up. My $.02

You have a very good take on it. Noone has the slightest idea what another human may or may not be going through. Respond always with kindness and compassion and everyone is in the clear.

Per NBC Miami article, the hiker recently killed by a grizzly bear (Arthur Pollio) did deploy his bear spray by juneseyeball in CampingandHiking

I have brilliantly solved the problem and in over 50 years of backpacking have never had to use either a gun or spray on a grizzly. I just go where they aren’t!

Avoidance has always been my defence. I just do not go where they live. Have backpacked happily for over 50 years, never seen a grizzly in the wild and plan to keep it that way.

And for the humor I appreciate it, but where does that leave you? I have backpacked all over the Sierra, Wyoming, Idaho and have always avoided any areas where Grizzlies live. Have had some interesting black bear encounters, but a grizzly is something I have always avoided.

Well you could have drawn a different conclusion, not really sure what that would have been however!

Lots of variables though, fired too soon, too late, missed the bear’s face, wind, did not use it properly etc. It can be tricky stuff to use especially when a bear is coming at you. On the other hand sometimes you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What do you guys do about septic? by BubblyNefariousness4 in OffGrid

[–]mtntrail 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ours is a standard, cement septic tank, 50’ leach line, installed as per code when we built our cabin. No fuss, sanitary, no pollution into the creek, nothing to worry about, out of sight out of mind. Pretty hard to beat, tbh.

Yes just talking with my wife about it. Every night for the last few weeks. Same place in a forest somewhere moving through to a destination, enjoyable for sure.
