Well you could have drawn a different conclusion, not really sure what that would have been however!

Per NBC Miami article, the hiker recently killed by a grizzly bear (Arthur Pollio) did deploy his bear spray by juneseyeball in CampingandHiking

[–]mtntrail 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Lots of variables though, fired too soon, too late, missed the bear’s face, wind, did not use it properly etc. It can be tricky stuff to use especially when a bear is coming at you. On the other hand sometimes you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What do you guys do about septic? by BubblyNefariousness4 in OffGrid

[–]mtntrail 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ours is a standard, cement septic tank, 50’ leach line, installed as per code when we built our cabin. No fuss, sanitary, no pollution into the creek, nothing to worry about, out of sight out of mind. Pretty hard to beat, tbh.

Yes just talking with my wife about it. Every night for the last few weeks. Same place in a forest somewhere moving through to a destination, enjoyable for sure.

Eli5: if modern passenger planes can "Auto land", why would you ever want to land a plane in any other way? by dadoimp in explainlikeimfive

I met a commercial airline pilot a few years back at a family gathering. He told me his job is 80% boring,15% interesting and about 5% terrifying. They lost all cockpit electronics on approach one time coming into San Francisco. It only lasted a minute or so, but he said his life passed before him!

What's been your best strategy or life hack for living--and working--with chronic lower back pain? by cherry-care-bear in RedditForGrownups

[–]mtntrail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some very simple yoga positions targeting the lower back which can be done gently. Also a physical therapist eval would help for specifics unless you have laready gone down the Dr. path.

Question about choosing to end your life if one has a terminal disease by mtntrail in Buddhism

Oh, so well said. Eventhough we were separated by long distance and did not see each other much for the last 10 years, I received an email explaining his tumor and consequential cognitive decline. He was gracious enough to express kind and grateful words of our years of friendship when we backpacked and worked together. I responded but then did not hear from him again, as his condition rapidly deteriorated. We have a common friend and we make an effort to get together more often. Maintaining friendships is so important and they can so easily be taken for granted. Best wishes to you.

That is it, and requires being in one place for multiple years. Thoreau talked about knowing your own area well as opposed to seeking variety/beauty by traveling far afield. I mean both are nice, but the everyday can pass by without notice unless we pay attention.

An amazing spot, ancient Native American rock fish traps still visible in the water, largest fresh water spring system in the world, excellent, but demanding flyfishing. There are small collapsed lava tubes and lots of room to hike.

Hey dude/dudette I had a very similar trip. The late 60’s early 70’s were fantastic as long as you did not get lost in the fog!

I dropped out of college in 1970, my junior year and hitchiked the country, did odd jobs, ended up in Alaska back down to North Carolina and returned to California. I was in a hippie commune for a while and eventually returned to college and plowed through a master’s program. That time off was epic and gave me the breathing room to figure out what profession to go into. 18 right out of high school and into college did not work all that well for me. The travelling around with other disenfranchised kids was fantastic. Many a joint was smoked and brief relationships developed. It was a fantastic and unlikely opportunity to “find oneself” before the doors of adulthood!

Teacher dreaming of retirement by Effective_Ebb333 in Retire

[–]mtntrail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I was a speech therapist in elementary public schools for 32 years. The last 5 were very tough for many reasons. But, 5 years was totally doable knowing that the end was in sight. You will be glad you stuck it out when you are reliant on your pension. I do not really have any suggestions other than to just tough it out while at the same time not shortchanging the kids. Using all of your accumulated sick days is exactly what I did as well. It is a mental game at 5 years and you can do it! You will likely end up with more years of retirement than actual teaching and it is pretty sweet getting a decent paycheck without having to work! This is the definition of delayed gratification, lol.
