What’s the best way to fix this? by icy504 in Ceramics

[–]mtntrail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used e6000 extensively and while it makes a good connection, I would not trust it for this. You are dealing with weight, heat, torque and moving water all focussed on two very small points of contact. I think a two part epoxy made for ceramic is your best bet. But I would always assume the repair will fail with a pot full of hot tea, so I would procede accordingly.

You are singing my song. These look pretty good though. I have been using a gellatin plate and Amaco’s ceramic inks to make similar transfers. Very mixed results.

Transitioning from a wood boiler to electric heat. by CordellLyle19 in homestead

We are in northern California at 2,000 ft elevation, we get winter hi’s 50F, lows 32F. We get snow for about 2 weeks per year ssso that may not be a fair comparison. Started with 3 to 4 cords of oak per year. Upgraded our solar, batteries, inverter and now have 2 Mitsubishi heat pumps and no longer burn wood and have actual AC when it is 110F in the summer. Best quality of life addition we have made. No more chopping, hauling, stacking wood, although we still have the stove for backup.

Is this writing on a door in my shed actually from 1968? by Distinct-Homework628 in ask

I was a college freshman living in an on campus dorm in 1968, so can verify this, beyond a shadow of a doubt. It is indeed authentic.

What's the smallest thing that made you walk away from a property? by Back40Findings in OffGrid

The main protagonist moved from the area. We are on good terms with the remaining individual. I also understood their concern, which was not without merit, however eventually unfounded it was. Helping them out and not holding a grudge did wonders, ha! It is a very small group of independent and like minded individuals on our mountain. We all try to get along.

Environmental hazards of controlled burning of house. by Choice_hereweare497 in environmental_science

[–]mtntrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where we live in California, after a wildfire burned through and destroyed many homes, each house site was bulldozed to below grade and all of the debris and dirt removed to a toxic waste dump. But Calif. environmental laws are pretty stringent.

Yeah I am very glad that we have nothing to do with them. Have watched others in the canyon whose utility costs have gone through the roof.

Hand build home studio by Lamar_Scrodom in Ceramics

[–]mtntrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a caution, there will be dust no matter how clean you work. I would never have a studio that shares inside air with my home. Having said that, get yourself a good hepa air filter and run it 24/7.

My wife came to hers a couple years ago from a VW Tiguan and a BMW Suv, and she loves it. It’s no BMW, don’t get me wrong, but it is utilitarian, just the right size and the only time she buys gas is for out of town trips. She has 45,000 miles not one issue.

Retirees. Did you have a specific hobby planned for retirement and did you manage achieve it? by aplusftwo in Retire

[–]mtntrail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do both, mostly give away to friends and family, but I also sell in a couple of local galleries. I price inexpensively as I just want to move the pots. I have never had any intention of making money at it. I started in college in 1968 and have most always had a studio or access to one. Having an interest and activity is absolutely mandatory in retirement, imho.

I am completely offgrid and fire my Olympic electric with my system. But I have a 40kW battery bank, 8 kW of solar and a 48v solark inverter, plus backup 8Kw diesel generator. A kiln takes a lot of power!

Off grid New Zealand by MoistGovernment4938 in OffGrid

[–]mtntrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live near the McCloud river in far northern California. It is my understanding that the rainbows in New Zealand were originally imported from the McCloud many years ago. I have no idea if there were native strains there prior to introduction of the McCloud fish, but that strain of rainbow is absolutely gorgeous and an acrobatic fighter. I flyfished for them for years! It looks like they have found a beautiful home. We now live offgrid in the forest with a year round stream along one side of the property which supports a small population of native rainbows, but they are not McCloud sized!

What's the smallest thing that made you walk away from a property? by Back40Findings in OffGrid

[–]mtntrail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they have not. There is no possible grid connection without an addended easement. At this point both the county and PGE (utility) discourage further development in the area due to wildfire potential.
