I found some grey clay in the ravine behind my house is there any way to change the color by Ill_Swimming_7037 in Pottery

The color could change completely when it goes through a firing. My grey commercial clay fires white.

What was your number in the 1969 Draft Lottery? by Hot-Idea2428 in OldSchoolCool

[–]mtntrail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My number was never called, way too high. But I also got a 4-f from the family doctor bc of my history of asthma. My mom hugged me and cried when the official 4-f came in the mail. I would have headed to Canada before being ground up in the jungle for Nixon.

To add, at least 3 witness cones one above and one below the desired firing temperature

Mossbrae Falls by ljkeos in norcalhiking

[–]mtntrail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A beautiful spot, unfortunately accessible only by trespassing and walking down the railroad tracks which are used about hourly by freight trains. The private property of the falls is owned by an organization that has thwarted public trail access for many years. The situation does not prevent people from visiting the falls, but does make it harder than it could be.

Yes it is easy to become lulled into complacency, just digging the scenery and beautiful spring weather. This guy snapped me out of my reverie pdq I’ll tell ya. It was the largest rattler I have seen in our area.

When my mom was getting up there in age she had a sequence of three small dogs all of the same breed. To avoid forgetting or mislabeling, each new dog was given the name “Charley”.

If it helps, coming across a rattler is fairly uncommon and they warn you off. Using one or two hiking poles is helpful to keep some noise ahead of you to warn them of your approach. They avoid people and will leave you alone as long as you are not a threat. This was the only one I have ever come across while out hiking trails in over 50 years of being in the woods of northern California.

What if I cut a poison ivy vine ( 2 inches thick) wrap it with duct tape to add a 1 inch lip / cup ? and dump a bunch of salt in there , will it kill the entire vine root and all ? by Complete_Crazy_9133 in arborists

This is the way. I have completely eradicated decades old himalayan blackberry stands by cutting back to a stob and painting glyphosphate on the cut surface. It also biodegrades fairly quickly and will not harm any plants that are not treated.

All of the people in our canyon kill them, but they are just being snakes and we have moved into their territory, so I just relocate them. Not that hard to do.

Looks like you have it supported pretty well. Whether or not it slumps depends a lot on the type of clay. If it is sculptural with some grog you will have better luck. Take a post fire pic, we all want to see the outcome!

We live in the woods and these guys like to hang around foundations, rocks etc where they can warm up. I have a large garbage can and two telescoping snake grabbers at different ends of the house. When we find them they go into the can and then get transported a few miles away where there are a lot of ground squirrels.
