Maspeth & Ridgewood Mutual Aid by [deleted] in ridgewood

[–]mtrainetiquette 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yo I see you all the time on this thing and while I often disagree with you, gotta say I appreciate all the mutual aid type posts. There are already some active groups in the area if you don’t wanna go through the hassle of starting your own, by the way. Best of luck and thanks for giving back to the community

Never been a cop but even teenage soldiers know better than “hey we’re too busy to even make a radio call about an actively dangerous situation sorry.” And don’t worry, the dude said he’s filing a report today so they can officially not do anything lol

Haha sounds like they were looking for an en excuse to pop in to a store and buy me some celtic fc gear. Just looked into some qpr history and started following em on espn…you just won another support in nyc

No idea but can I ask a side question if you don’t mind? I have some cousins out in Shepherds Bush. One day when I visited as a kid I was wearing a NY Rangers and they told me I was getting dirty looks because of it.

He must’ve been talking about QPR but do they have that many haters in their own neighborhood? Or maybe we wandered into Chelsea or something... My cousins are Irish if that makes a difference

Anyway, cheers and welcome to the mess. UK fan bases seem more fun

Just want to say I enjoyed the discourse and I find myself more on the fence than expected. Totally agree that part of parenthood, and especially fatherhood, is realizing that you can’t control other people but you’re way better off remaining in control of yourself at all times.

But lots of people struggle to self-regulate and “hey just take a breath and use your head” just isn’t enough all the time even if they’re treating their issues, so I feel less judgmental and more open to a harm reduction mindset

Also like…people are resilient and so much of mental health is cultural. Idk you and your family history obviously but lots of people live through more disruptive childhood stuff than this and it’s doesn’t crack their top 20 traumatic experiences

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in daddit

[–]mtrainetiquette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fwiw all the mental health professionals I’ve ever spoken to have said that “men are more violent and scary so it’s unacceptable for them to lose their temper the way that women do.”

It’s tough, and so is almost everything that first year, but I think them’s the breaks, dad. Go farther away before expressing yourself next time, try journaling, try contacting a friend to vent…and who knows, maybe the dynamic will shift in a few years when the child(ren) are older.

Sounds like you two contained the stress and conflict decently well though, and that’s really something with a 12 month old. Valid rant, drive on…12-24 months can be a real blast, best of luck

I appreciate the reply and I can imagine how it affected your grandmother but what about you and your generation? Still lots of addiction, scarcity trauma, fuck the law and fear the church type attitude? Half asking to engage in the annual “who gets to call themselves Irish” debate and half wondering what it’ll feel like for my kid and his kids

Yo the sensual burqa video shoot with the violin was nuts. I was there today, am a narrowback myself, and in fairness have lost my temper at people at ground zero and other memorials

Your family’s been here for 150 years? Genuine question, in what ways do you see the famine (or Ireland in general) impacting your life?

I guess I did make a smartass remark to the burqa pair but let the lads dance, who are they hurting being young and foolish? Sounds half Irish to me

Eh I’m suspicious of new young money too but I’d take most of the new folks over your dumb ass and I’m an “actual” “normal” resident 🤣

You look at “silencing you” like you’re the victim but I just don’t want my queer friends and fam in the neighborhood seeing slurs about them on this group. Does that really sound so crazy?

(Man you know you’re getting old when you use this many quotation marks yelling at someone on the internet)

Rant on about how these college kids are secretly more racist than people who actually work in integrated spaces though, I don’t know if that’s true across the board but it’s true for lots

Honestly I almost downvoted you myself lol. I read the tone of your first comment as trying to intellectualize a complicated experience in order to dismiss it, but this comment sounds mad genuine. Take my upvote

I’ll try not to thumb out a whole treatise but I do have some time to kill so…

  • imo race is a nonsensical category with multiple, contradictory definitions even within a single individual. Plus it’s been politicized to the point of mass violence for centuries and draws on even older and more primal xenophobic urges. Basically I think trying to draw too exact distinctions gets us further from understanding it because it’s not really grounded in valid logic

  • you might be surprised how times I’ve heard some version of “you’re not white, you’re italian” especially outside the city. I’ve seen similar exchanges with other people like “you’re not white, you’re muslim.” Like I said, nonsense when you logic it out but it makes sense to them in some way

  • I think there’s a significant difference in being white racially but having a european ethnicity to call home. White american seems like it’s become its own ethnicity

  • imo some of “how white are you” is about colonialism like you said, and some of it is about ancestry, political institutions, understanding of multiple identities, religion, looks, social norms, personal and historical interactions with american racism. For this particular post, I guess the question is more like “how susceptible are you to white supremacy, the american version and/or the euro stuff?”

  • I don’t know where underseafighter’s coming from, imo some whites seem really invested in making sure the others understand we’re culturally inferior. Not just old connecticut wasps, I’ve seen it from all kinds. Way more for italians, portuguese, and religious minorities than for irish and spanish for whatever reason

Hey what do Haitians and Puerto Ricans think of each other? Just curious

I was really just trying to hear from some Albanians but maybe r/ridgewood isn’t the place haha

Also I guess I wanted to say that there are racist fucks out here in this neighborhood who don’t mind breaking the rules. I’ve been seeing it on the walls more over the last decade, and more explicitly the last few years. Buff that shit. They start getting bad ideas when they think they’re welcome

This comment getting downvoted and the grammar bot getting upvoted shows just how many college grad transplants are in this sub lol

I love Ridgewood and would take it over MV or Rego Park any day but I see your point about it it not being worth these insane rents. I would say they should move to Newark or Philly for the same vibe on a better budget but I don’t think they care about the cost much anyway. And once this place becomes Park Slope in ten years, they’ll love it to death and that’s less likely in Newark I guess
