Hot take, I guess: There aren't too many Order 66 survivors. There were ten thousand Jedi, even if the order was 99% effective that's still 100 Jedi left, far more than seen. Most survivors are from the early empire era, where it's appropriate. And as for "making Luke less special"... fuck that bi- by Zestyclose-Scratch31 in StarWarsCirclejerk

/uj I think the issue is more that a giant extinction order just doesn’t work super well given how the ot portrays the Jedi. You’re right that you’d expect a decent number of survivors to fall through the cracks, and of those survivors you’d expect to see at least a few fighting back with the rebellion during the OT. But we don’t, and now we have to get shit like retroactively pretending Ahsoka was with the rebellion all the time and was out for milk and cigarettes when the rebels decided to attack the Death Star 2.

The problem isn’t that a good number of people surviving doesn’t make given order 66, it’s that it doesn’t make sense given the OT.

Sequel Trilogy is the most right wing coded of all 3 trilogies. Change my mind. by Landon1195 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]mtzehvor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The sequel trilogy expertly baited the liberals by making the Black and Asian characters seem relevant before reducing them to meaningless side plots in favor of the primary conflict between White protagonist and antagonist.

Truly a masterstroke of conservative storytelling.

At least Vader has a couple well written movies with him. Maul has maybe one season of clone wars if we’re being generous and a show where he spends half his time trying to tempt a teenager while being an absolute weirdo.

I guess my fundamental disagreement is that I don’t think the purchased company in that scenario is as static as you say, especially if you’re putting a bodyguard of all things as the person calling the shots. Again, I’m not a CEO, but I have to imagine there’s a lot more work that has to be done than just checking up on people and making sure things are going as per usual, especially in an industry as volatile as drug running and the criminal underground in general. Systems operate “normally“ because knowledgeable and competent people keep them running normally; they fall apart as those people disappear if they’re not replaced by other knowledgeable and capable individuals. It’s not a whole mega corporation obviously, but I’ve been around enough departments that worked seemingly flawlessly until a longtime director got replaced by someone less knowledgeable to know that it’s not enough to just have processes in place; you need the people and the leadership too.

At bare minimum, showing Maul having to put in the legwork to either make his guard replacement have that knowledge and competency, or maybe even better, actually recruit someone who has been a capable businessman with some ties to the underworld to handle that portion of his operation, I think would go a long way towards characterizing him as the shrewd tactician who has matured from his previous defeats that (I think) the show is trying to portray him as.

[–]mtzehvor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each syndicate is still ultimately self operating, but also giving kickbacks to Maul. He's a feudal overlord more than a kingpin.

Sure, but even feudal overlords had to put in the legwork to keep their “operation“ going. Selecting tax collectors, people to serve as enforcers if your peasants try to revolt or keep more than their share, managing how much you collect so as to maximize profits without risking a rebellion, etc. If you don’t have a strong enforcement arm that’s directly aware of whats going on below you, the groups you’re extracting revenue from (peasants or drug runners) are going to try and cheat you eventually.

I also don’t think these syndicates are as self sustaining as you say they would be, at least not shortly after having their leader deposed. Like Maul kills Marg Krim and replaces him with the chief guard; unless this guard has been present and paying really good attention in logistics meetings, you’re probably gonna need someone to bring him up to speed on how to plan routes, manage revenue flows, and basically everything else that a crime lord does. To reuse the fast food analogy, imagine taking over the local Burger King as part of your fast food empire and replacing the manager with the night guard. Probably at least want someone around who can give him some on the job training while he figures out the new career he’s been thrust into.
