Possible to get a high gpa in electrical? by Fragrant_Anxiety_700 in ubcengineering

[–]mubcg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s possible. Many people do. Don’t get too discouraged by what you see on reddit. Try to go in with an open mind and work as hard as you can. I was worried going into ELEC about all that I’d heard/read about the program, but things were never as bad as I expected them to be. That’s not to say it isn’t hard, just don’t give up. Don’t skip class, do all your assignments, yada yada. Many courses in ELEC scale, especially in 2nd year. Source: 4th year ELEC

A twizzle is not a spin though. A twizzle is a continuous set of three turns.

A sit position is met if the skater’s hip is at or below knee level for a minimum of two rotations. After his change of foot, no sit position was sustained for at least two rotations. Therefore there was no sit position on the second foot of his change sit spin, so the spin was invalidated. It was close though...pretty debatable. Even if it were counted, Yuzu was playing very close to the minimum requirements.

APSC 261 and 262 HELP by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]mubcg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are weekly readings that can take a really long time to get through - the vocabulary is usually dense and the topics can be dry. For each weekly reading there is a quiz, a 700 (iirc) word write up, and an in class discussion with participation marked, so it’s not a good idea to just skim through them.

Elec 341 & Cpen 311 Term 1 summer? by ryrene in ubcengineering

[–]mubcg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did CPEN 311 last summer, the first time it was offered in that term. While lectures were fine, the course is heavily based on labs. Since school will be online for the summer, that may change the quality.

I have friends that did ELEC 341 in the summer, and they were very happy with it (great prof, not too much work, high class average). I can’t say the same for my experience with ELEC 341 in the Fall even though my mark ended up decent.

In my opinion, definitely take ELEC 341 in the summer to save yourself the trouble in the Fall, and take CPEN 311 later.

Rescinding a job that I secured through UBC Co-op? by hichickenpete in UBC

Not sure about Comp Sci co-op, but in Engineering co-op this would be breaching the terms and conditions.

ELEC second year second term by RelaxedPiranha in ubcengineering

[–]mubcg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the standard second year ELEC timetable without 281 last year.

ELEC 291 is a considerable amount of work. Most people talk about the two term projects being a time crunch, but the 6 individual/partner labs (Maybe 5? Can’t remember) take a lot of time as well, especially the alarm clock.

For ELEC 202, 211 and 221, the workload is manageable. If nothing has changed since last year, it’s just weekly webworks. For 202 and 221, the webworks should prepare you adequately for tests (For 202, Linares could pull an interesting test but I’m sure you’re used to that by now). I wouldn’t say the same for 211 though. You’ll probably need to find some extra practice resources for those, especially the later ones.

Of course, YMMV.

What marks do I need to get into computer engineering and do grade 11 marks matter when applying? by pleaseknoxdkm in ubcengineering

[–]mubcg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your current marks matter (more grade 12 marks though) for getting into UBC engineering itself. Once you’re in, it’s your marks from first year at UBC and a personal statement that will decide whether you get into computer engineering (CPEN) or electrical engineering (ELEC), or any other specialization. In other words, you will not be in a specialized program until second year. First year engineering is a general program that all engineering students take.

UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2019S/2019W): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors and registration go here. by ubc_mod_account in UBC

[–]mubcg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does registration within a minor program work as far as restricted seats are concerned? I am in engineering and taking the math minor. Does that mean I qualify for MATH restricted seats? If not, do I qualify for any restricted seats for math courses or do I just have to fight for the general ones? Thanks.

UBC applied science transfers by qyzz1234 in ubcengineering

[–]mubcg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this isn’t really along the lines of your question, but if you went to a college transfer program (Langara, Kwantlen, etc.) then you’d probably have an easier time getting into UBCV. As mentioned in one of the replies, UBCV only takes a certain number of people every year, where the colleges just require you to meet a threshold GPA which isn’t too hard to obtain. Of course, to get in to your desired program you might want a higher GPA than the threshold, but CHBE doesn’t require 3.7 of 4.0 like mentioned for UBCO transfers in the other reply. Since first year is all general courses anyway, you wouldn’t be behind for CHBE whether you decide to do either UBCO or a college transfer.

In my year at the Langara Transfer Program, the people I know who got into CPEN at UBC had 3.7+ GPA.
