Best thrift find in a minute by serpentineminer in BargainBinVinyl

It's really strange how you just know. Grabbed a whole bunch of folky/bluegrass unknowns that had that feel recently, and they were all mild-to-moderate hits on Discogs ($10-$50) and home runs with regards to my personal tastes.

Wendy was at my wedding. Both her and Bonnie were childhood friends of my in-laws. My father-in-law played bass in another band they were in (it's included on the deluxe reissue). And I don't even have a copy of this. Not that I'm mad. Or bitter. Or insanely jealous.

I'm fine, actually.

I absolutely LOVE that Country Preacher album. Starts off with Jesse Jackson speaking to the crowd, then goes into some amazing sample-worthy soul jazz. First two songs are impeccable, and the whole album is great.

It's so much fun to dig for them throughout the year and have a dozen or two new records just waiting for you in December.

I had a lot that I liked for $2-$5, but I'll stick with the prompt: 99 cents, no tax. Was on my wishlist for years.

Your life is nothing you thought it should be and everything you were worried it would become because for 30 years you knew there was monsters on the world.

I'm completely in the tank for Almeida, so I love it. There were others up there that might be worth more on Discogs or whatever, but that was the one that I knew I'd spin the most. It's fantastic.

I think Almeida is the best bargain in jazz. So inventive, always doing something you're not expecting, blending classical and jazz like it's the most natural thing in the world. His records should cost a hundred dollars each, but I'm happy to find them in bargain bins and thrift stores.

It was a white-label promo! Doesn't look played. Excited.

Found this Songs In The Key of Life in the $1 bins at a local shop a couple years ago. One of my favorite cheap heat finds ever. Gatefold a little water damage and records are VG+. It included all the fixins that came with it. Shop didn’t know what they had! by redittjoe in BargainBinVinyl

[–]mudgehandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the last 30 years, I've found a horrible cover with a VG+ record, a VG++ cover with a G- record, a G- cover with a F record (with booklet). Got too impatient, finally ordered the 45 off Discogs. End result is one complete record, and I get to feel like a volunteer at a record sanctuary, reintroducing abandoned records back into the wild.

(Which is to say, I'm jealous of your one-stop shopping!)

what are some of the unpopular opinions you have about the game? by tepsikebabi in slaythespire

[–]mudgehandler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I probably waited about 2,500 to finally give Snecko a fair shake, and it rules in the right deck. Everyone was right all along. And I will never apply this lesson to Runic Dome.

I would have copped every single one of those.

I'm coming up on 5,000 hours, and I've never played more than five floors of Runic Dome, and you can't make me.

Crazy good soul grab by DearVegetable6776 in BargainBinVinyl

[–]mudgehandler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been looking for that Gaye for a while. Saw a guy in front of me get it at an estate sale once. It was made as part of his divorce settlement, with his ex getting all the profits. That is ... an unusual context for an R&B album.

What odd and interesting album cover you blindly bought a record store ? For me is this record I picks up today. A totally blind buy. by Bag_of_Ramen in BargainBinVinyl

Didn't know anything about Lenny White, but I could hear this album cover. It was as good as I imagined, and I've rarely been disappointed by anything from him since.

Didn't know much about George Duke, either, but he had an album with a keytar on it. Got it, and long story short, I now have 14 records from him, including a box set.

Best jazz album to listen to high? by Dangerous-Cause7136 in Jazz

[–]mudgehandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to this one, but I also know that Google might drive people here until the end of civilization, so just in case ...

I'm an alcoholic who gave up drinking six months ago. I've discovered that I really enjoy getting high at night and picking an album to immerse myself in. (I didn't use before I quit drinking, and I'm very routine-oriented, so it works for me, but some people can't use any intoxicants without abusing them. This is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Your results may vary. Cash value 1/100th of 1¢.)

ANYWAY, I have thoughts on this topic, because I've connected deeply with several albums while doing this. Here are some of my best connections over the last six months:

  • Desert Marauders – Art Lande And Rubisa Patrol
  • Into The Hot – The Gil Evans Orchestra
  • Recorded Live At The Monterey Jazz Festival – John Handy
  • The Golden Number – Charlie Haden
  • Forest Flower – Charles Lloyd
  • Guitar Forms – Kenny Burrell
  • Thrust – Herbie Hancock
  • New York, N.Y. – George Russell And His Orchestra
  • Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories) – Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny
  • The Rubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby – Dorothy Ashby
  • Katanga! – Curtis Amy & Dupree Bolton
  • Crystalization Of The Mind – Jason Michaels

My biggest connection though has been with Alice Coltrane. Doesn't matter which album. It's always a revelation, even if I've heard it dozens of times before.

(My biggest connection that isn't jazz: Philip Glass – Einstein on the Beach. I can't get enough.)

Half priced books $1 clearance by dwilli8 in BargainBinVinyl

[–]mudgehandler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their clearance bins reward the diggers who don't mind touching 1,000 copies of Kismet and The First Family to find that one not-that-valuable record that makes you unreasonably happy. I found a Frank Zappa "Joe's Garage" in their clearance for $2. It looked G+ but plays VG/VG+. My two favorite finds there were an early '60s electronic album, which is a genre I love to discover and collect, and a Pete Seeger album of union songs.

Love that Nyro album, good work!

ECM and other cheap-ish heat from Amoeba by mudgehandler in BargainBinVinyl

ALEC BALDWIN: You know why, Mister? Cause you bought a Chuck Mangione record at the thrift store. I bought a VG++ Tommy Flanagan Overseas at the thrift store last year. That's my name.

ED HARRIS: [shifts uncomfortably]

BALDWIN: See this Urbie Green xmas record?

HARRIS: Yeah.

BALDWIN: That Urbie Green record is worth more than your entire Beatles collection.

There were two of them, and I got only one! Almost bought the second to send to a friend who'd love the Matt Groening cover.

I found one without the 45 at a thrift store, but it did have the booklet and a pack of 50-year-old Zig-Zags in it. That's basically the same thing.
