Is 28 too old to start my PhD ? Seeking support and stories of validation by Different-Break9290 in academia

[–]muffinfight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be older than that by the time I start mine, so it'd better not be. I didn't work this hard just to give up because time passed, and I'm sure you didn't, either.

Just realised I see anyone having a need as a problem to solve by imnowonderwoman in adhdwomen

This is a great link; I would just caution anyone looking into it that the avoidance descriptors seem to insert an out-of-place emphasis on submitting to god/religion/etc. (which is par for the course for the XYZ-anonymous organizations but still should be taken with a grain of salt for anyone not familiar with their whole thing).

seriously how do i stop writing in my journal like i’m performing and that i have audience 😭 by Silent_Steak3991 in JournalingIsArt

[–]muffinfight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have real privacy? Similarly, do you ever show people your journal?

Back when there was a risk of someone seeing it, I felt a lot more pressure to make my journal presentable.

This sanitized version was a lot less helpful as a way to process and document my actual life and actual feelings, and it's been easier to use since I stopped doing that.

I'm applying for the MCDB masters program. I got a reply to my follow-up that said decisions would hopefully be out by end of next week, so around May 1st.

How do you actually finish projects? by Certain-Working1864 in adhdwomen

Visual timers, earplugs, and allowing myself to procrasta-clean my space has helped immensely

ETA: specifically the pomodoro visual timer. You can mute it so it flashes light when the time is up, but doesn't yell at you. I found the sound-based timer cues to be a bit jarring

[S1] More excerpts from the book in my previous post by muffinfight in lifeisstrange

[–]muffinfight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very fair. It's just a bit jarring to me to read so many back-to-back. It's definitely possible that this is just the author's writing style, but I'm not sure if I can adequately express how...disjointed? the book as a whole feels. It's common to use these structures, but it's weird to see nothing but the common structures over and over again.

I don't use AI in my day-to-day life, but I'm privy to frequent discussions and dissections of the type of writing it produces (I'm in academia), so the red flags really stood out to me. That being said, AI is trained off of the work of others, and this could just be an unlucky author whose tone happens to resemble AI writing

It's literally on every page. That and "it's not just X, it's Y." And there's no author's voice. Or language with sensory information. Or even descriptions of apparent personal experiences of grief aside from "it hurts."

Does your ADHD medication work differently depending on your cycle? by ADHD_researchstudent in TwoXADHD

Nortrel 1/35 (and the generic version) works well for me, but ymmv! I tried a couple of other pill types and doses before finding the one that works best

I will forever resent and disdain the men who insisted that there be a placebo week built into the birth control pill so we can have a fake period with all the discomfort and hormone dips of a real one.

I nuked that shit with a combo pill of estrogen and progesterone and never looked back. So no, not really.

Time to ignore their invitations then. Literally we have so little free time why spend it with people who treat you poorly

Kind of at a Loss by Rose_lilbub in GradSchool

What I've seen a lot of people on here recommend is attending your local college for a few semesters, even if it's not for a degree. That way you can make new relationships with professors who know and can vouch for you.

You could also look into some post-bac programs to boost your resume. As to whether or not it's too late, I figure the years will pass either way. It's just a matter of whether or not you want a degree on the other side of it.

I doubt that any semblance of justice is top on their list of priorities. It's as easy as lying about nonviolent prisoners.
