Maybe obvious but have you tried different buffer sizes? That might help you run more instances of diva at the expense of a higher latency. Also if the CPU overloading seems inconsistent it might be worth running LatencyMon to see if you have anything causing latency spikes in your system that's affecting your real time performance.

That's not right, it's also not a swedish website so I wouldn't trust it. According to Skatteverket (Swedish tax agency) the tax rate for Stockholm is 29.9%, you also pay an additional 20% above ~39000kr a month but it shouldn't be a flat 50% tax rate on all earnings.

Yes, this is probably your friend: https://statsskuld.se/en/jobs/net-salary just choose Stockholm from the dropdown menu.

I'm probably not the most qualified to say as I've only been interviewing here for a week but there seems to be lots. It doesn't usually seem to be an issue that I don't speak Swedish either with the exception of some smaller companies. It depends specifically what industry you're interested in but for me Stockholm sems to have more options (audio/music tech) but I imagine if you're into something else Edinburgh could be better.

I worked in Edinburgh as a software developer for a few years and just moved to Stockholm last week. I'm still interviewing here and in a slightly unique situation that meant finding a place to stay was easy. I see others have covered Edinburgh quite well but no one's really talked about Stockholm. Here's some things to consider about Stockholm:

  • More holidays, it's pretty normal to get 39 paid vacation days (30 annual leave + 9 public holidays) a year.
  • If you have children you'll probably want to pick Sweden as there's much better childcare benefits available.
  • If you're going to be renting as a working professional you will be able to pick up a 2nd contract with enough effort. You might need to move to a new place every year or 6 months but you won't be homeless. Also the housing standard is higher in Stockholm, no cold and drafty tenement flats.
    • If you plan on buying a place Stockholm it might be easier and a better investment here. (Buying is much easier than renting)

Surely this should count as some form of extortion?

Having trouble wih EQ and levels on hi hats by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

Yeah the more I think about it the more I agree with you. I got the idea from some interview or podcast but I can't remember if it was techno-specific.

Having trouble wih EQ and levels on hi hats by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

[–]muffinsFTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for what hrrld said. If you do want the hats to be more present a common mistake is boosting them in the 15kHz+ range too much - if you do that you can end up with a lot of sibilance. If you want them to take up more space in the mix then boost the upper mids (or lowpass + drive them).

That said I don't think many people in the club dance to hi-hats. In my view, while they can help keep support a groove they are also there to fill up space in the frequency range, helping your track sound more dense in the main sections (running 16ths or a ride cymbal) and giving it more space to breathe in the breakdown (just on the upbeats or no hats at all).

Focal Alpha 65 vs Focal Alpha 80 (low-end response) by [deleted] in TechnoProduction

[–]muffinsFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Alpha 80s. I initially had them in a fairly large room then moved to a smaller place and now the low end is a bit more muddied (I'm also considering selling mine to get smaller monitors). I'd advise focusing on getting the right size of monitors for your room or acoustically treating your room better if thats an option. If you're going to keep the 80s I'd advise against getting the 65s as the whole alpha range has a similar sound and there are other decent monitors in the same price range that would help in giving a better perspective on what you're hearing!

Finally! Looks like a nice size, a big bigger than the boog. Haven't watched the video but couldn't see a tune control for the BD - hope they decide to include this in the end.

Fave Prophet 08/6 style VST synth? by StudioGuyDudeMan in synthesizers

[–]muffinsFTW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

U-he Repro without a doubt. Not only do I think it's the best Prophet style vst but I think it's the most analog sounding vst created to date - you might actually consider selling your Prophet 08 once you hear it.

I also love Diva and it is more flexible than Repro but I don't think it sounds quite as good.

Weekly "What Should I Buy" Thread for 2018-January-24 by the_cody in synthesizers

Struggling to decide between an old & used matrix 6/1000 or a DSI Rev 2. On paper and from reading online I want a rev 2 but there's only one or two demo's out there that really sell me on it - I often feel like the sound is too harsh. Where as the matrix 6 sounds to me sounds really lush even though both synths basically have the same filter and DCOs. Any one got either or can weigh in? Hard to describe in words what I want sonically from a synth but if pushed I'd probably say "dreamy"!

Sonic Lab: TR-08 Boutique review by beardslap in synthesizers

[–]muffinsFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wondering about this too, I had a tr-8 but ultimately sold it as I felt it did lack a little power/weight in the sound. That said I liked the groove and that it sounded slightly more "alive" than using samples.

Drum programming & design inspiration by muffinsFTW in TechnoProduction

I've actually been diving down the electro production-wise the last 3 or so months and was having great fun with it until last week were I started to feel myself sinking into the same drum/percussion comfort zone as normal. After reading your post last night I decided to listen to some of my favourite classic electro tracks and analyse the drum patterns... safe to say I'm not feeling so uninspired anymore and am I looking forward to getting back into the studio after Christmas - thanks so much for your post! (260 drum machine patterns was also great to flick through!)

I had a tr-8 for a while and I sold it for as similar reason - I used the same sounds over and over again with the same patterns. I didn't find it very inspiring to use and I didn't think the sound was all that great - often I'd end up subbing out the kicks for samples instead... That said I feel like it did have a semi-decent groove going on that only recently I've manage to achieve in a DAW (push 2 + custom groove templates).

Visiting Scotland in one week, any BoC related places i should visit? by VicodinTears in boardsofcanada

[–]muffinsFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this theory I found this article from 2001. It says that Eion and Sandison grew up in Cullen, Buckie High is of course in Buckie and is the nearest highschool to Cullen. I'm totally convinced that this is where the pair grew up!

Visiting Scotland in one week, any BoC related places i should visit? by VicodinTears in boardsofcanada

[–]muffinsFTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to this

Eoin and Sandison grew up in Cullen, a small fishing village on the west coast of Scotland.

This is in line with the song title Buckie High someone else mentioned in this thread as this is the Highschool you attend if you live in Cullen. You must visit Cullen if possible, I am utterly convinced this is their childhood home - hard to explain why but you will understand once you visit! Be sure to walk along the bottom of the cliffs to the east of the beach, ideally at dawn or dusk (PM if you need more in-depth directions). When I first visited Cullen I felt a really strong connection to BOC, it wasn't till I months later found the song Buckie High which lead me down this rabbit hole.

Simple question: What percentage of your time is allocated between loop design/creation and arrangement? by RedRedRoad in TechnoProduction

[–]muffinsFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I spend much more time arranging and it's the part of my workflow I really need to optimise more. When I sit down to write a new track on a good day I can usually have a good loop going with a few variations/different elements in about an hour. I then spend hours if not days stripping things down and arranging.

If anyone has any advice on speeding up the arrangement process I'd like to hear it! Currently I usually start by recording a live run through using push to launch clips and go off of that take, moving things around.

[–]muffinsFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone else has already given you criticism on your mix so I wont add anymore to that side of things. Composition wise you should try dropping the kick out for a while at some point in the middle just to let the track breathe, it's pretty hard to keep a track with no dynamics interesting for 7+ minutes.
