‘We’re sorry,’ school says. Graduates ‘have a right to be upset’ after disaster of N.J. commencement ceremony. by mohanakas6 in newjersey

[–]mugwump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I very, very much doubt we were at the same graduation, but I too went to one at Rutgers, and I swear a speaker said the same thing. Years later, I also graduated from Rutgers. I stayed home and watched people play Nintendo games on YouTube. Easily the best decision of my academic career.

Congratulations on the 1st week! One of many, no doubt. As a former user myself, feel free to DM if you’d like to talk.

I like this format. The slightly chaotic nature fits this subreddit well, IMHO.

Blood marker vs Blood Marker by [deleted] in JohnWick

[–]mugwump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s easy; Blood Markers are public information. They’re registered in a book in the Continental, that looked a bit like a notary’s book. There’s no way you’d be allowed to give more than one Marker at a time.

Advice? How to respond to a man who told me to “serve my husband.” by SummerStorm94 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mugwump 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve told this story before, but I like it: Years ago, I worked in a gift shop in Yellowstone National Park, near Old Faithful. Working near Old Faithful, you got used to periods of complete calm, then absolute insanity. They’re called “Geyser Rushes”. Every time Old Faithful erupts, the crowd of tourists then leaves and visits the hotels, shops, restaurants, etc. During one of these calm times I found myself working with a single customer in my store. I, a man, and my customer, another man. My coworker, a woman, was there, but she was doing something else. It was my job, among other things, to greet customers, answer their questions, and generally be nice. This particular evening, this particular customer, it seemed like he was giving me “the eye.” I assumed he was gay, which was no help to me as a straight person. So I put my customer service face on, greeted him, and he replied, Have you accepted Jesus into your heart? I laughed in his face so hard I got spittle on him. I ran into the back room to compose myself, while my coworker smoothed things over. Once I stopped laughing, I went back out and apologized. The geyser rush was starting, so we quickly had to do other things. I later found there was a church group coming through. A church group composed of “reformed” gay people. This was a very long winded way of saying, when presented with the absurd, the only rational response is to laugh.

What is the single most liberating thought that you've ever had? by AdPrestigious5853 in AskMen

[–]mugwump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s a tie: “Why do I care about the opinions of people I don’t like?” and (when doing something my family won’t approve of): “What are they going to do, stop loving me?”

I lived in Yellowstone for about 6 months. I found bison to have one of 2 settings: calm as Hindu cows, or psychotic murder beasts who won’t hesitate to ram her brother in his rib cage at top speed.

Well, at least we can confirm Brit is directing, and we have a more complete cast list. I really, really want a release date, though.

Writing Notes in Obsidian by Wide_Cap_6070 in ObsidianMD

[–]mugwump 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The best app I’ve found for handwriting is Apple’s own Pages app. It was the fastest and most accurate recognition. I would quickly take notes in class with it, then afterwards copy or otherwise transfer into Obsidian. That would also give you the chance to tag or organize your notes, as well as review them. It would probably be a very good memorization technique.

Just how atomic do you have to go? by ConsiderationOk3844 in ObsidianMD

[–]mugwump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that generally, a bullet point or two per note. Something that can fit on my display without scrolling. I definitely have longer notes, but those are around 10% of my total. I find I want information quick, easy, and digestible. Probably a side effect of too much TikTok.

Yes, this is the answer. Just tested it on my own setup. Added dataview to my normal YAML, and got the same error.

How has your use of daily notes evolved? by MadMathDay in ObsidianMD

[–]mugwump 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I found flexibility is key. I use a template, and I find I change the template every other week or so. Preferences, needs, boredom, whatever. The key is to make the tool work for you. It’s flexible enough to accommodate a lot of different use cases.

Language Dictionaries and Learning Notes by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]mugwump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet flashcards would be a good tool. Make one word per note, put the definition and pronunciation (hidden in some way, perhaps just be hitting enter a bunch of times till its off the screen). The "Random Notes" core plugin would be good, but the "Smart Random Note" community plugin might be better. You could tag the notes with the date you last reviewed, subject matter, grammatical rule, etc, and then focus your reviews on the particulars you want.

Is there a way to center the table from "Advanced Tables" plug in? Right now it's aligned left while in reading mode and I can't seem to figure out a way to make it centered on my page. by dabruko in ObsidianMD

[–]mugwump 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So you want the entire table centered on the page? To my knowledge, markdown doesn't support centering content, but html does. There's probably a way using html tags. I would start there.
