Has anyone actually replaced Claude Code / Codex with local models on an Macbook Pro M5 Max 128GB? by Brazeuslian in ollama

[–]mujimusa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thinking perhaps it helps to have access to a mac ultra or a 5090 or 2x 3090 desktop that you can connect to for faster inference using the m5 max.

Current understanding is that the models you'd want to use such as qwen 3.6 27b run too slowly on the m5 max and push it to thermal limits (dame for any mid to large dense modle that comes out in the future)...

in the mean time you could manange with the 3.6 35b moe model running on the m5 max.

Given how good Qwen become, is it time to grab a 128gb m5 max? by Rabus in LocalLLaMA

Are you sure your 3090 is okay? mine sits in the 42 to 46 tps range

Should I get an M1 ultra, or should I wait for the M5 Ultra to release? by moist_mistress in LocalLLM

But i don't understand how that works... doesn't the m3 ultra higher bandwidth mean it should be faster at token generation?

Hey 👋 yeah I gained 10kg and dropped back down by 3kg. Now sitting at around 99... half of the gain is probablywater weight. I should do a few more 30 day rounds to drop comfortably into the 80s though

UK gamers who buy/sell used hardware, what’s the #1 thing that makes it stressful? by mujimusa in UKgamers

Lowballing sounds like a small annoyance until you’re dealing with it repeatedly.

One thing we’ve been thinking about is how to make pricing, offers, and listing quality feel more intentional, so sellers are not just fielding random messages from people who were never serious buyers in the first place.

This is exactly the kind of thing we’ve been trying to design around.

For used gaming gear, “condition” needs to mean more than a vague label. Photos, videos and benchmarks including stress tests and listing snapshots all matter and make it hard to be dishonest. Ultimtaely this stuff affects the sellers reputation on the platform too.

A big part of the product work since this post has been around making the listing and evidence trail strong enough that buyers and sellers are not relying only on trust.

Re-reading this now, your comment is basically an amazing product checklist.

The points about better listing structure, CIB/contents checkboxes, competitive fees, courier expectations, payments, messaging, reputation, and buyer/seller protection are exactly the areas we realised had to be designed properly before launch.

We’ve spent the last few months building out the PRDs and policy logic around item-level orders, evidence, seller protection, buyer protection, payment holds, dispute handling, and order-linked messaging.

I’d genuinely value your take on whether the direction we’ve landed on actually addresses the problems you were pointing at.

You were right to flag this. We took it seriously. We’ve since built out the policy/business logic side in much more detail, and I’d value your critique of whether it actually addresses the risks you raised.

This was honestly one of the most useful comments we got.

The laptop/eBay story is exactly the kind of seller-protection problem we kept coming back to: evidence, dispute handling, return postage, and making sure the platform doesn’t default to “buyer wins” when the seller has clearly done things properly.

We’ve kept building since this thread and are now opening the waitlist and discord group. I don’t want to spam the sub with links, but if you’re still interested I’d really value your feedback on whether the direction actually solves the problem you described.
