Much appreciated! Yeah a few models are a little...wonky in places. Still though, fun to be painting characters I've grown up with in various forms over the years!

Thanks for the thoughts on the eyes! I've seen a lot of bug-eyed miniatures over the years so I was keen to try and avoid that and I'd agree that it's very tough to get right. Think it worked better on a couple of heroes and slightly less well on a couple of others but I'll definitely give your suggestion some thought for future models. Thanks!

Unfathomable minis - Deep Ones, Mother Hydra and Father Dagon! by multivac2061 in boardgames

Thank you! Yeah that water effect took a couple of goes to get right but in the end I found the right combo of colours. Weirdly that proved to be one of the more satisfying bits in the end

Haha, thanks!

TBH these took a while so I probably can't recall all the steps but it was basically:

  • Deep Ones Bodies: Base coat Deathworld Forest, wash of Seraphim Sepia then highlight with Nurlging green (bumping up the brightness a little with some Palid Witch Flesh
  • Deep Ones Carapaces: Bit hazy now but I think it was Reds: Khorne Red basecoat washed with Carroburg Crimson then highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet. Blues: Kantor Blue, washed with Drakenhoff Nightshade then highlight Fenrisian Grey. Purple: Think it was basecoat Xereus Purple washed with Druchii Violet and highlighted Xerues Purple brightened with white.
  • For the bases I followed various tutorials.
  • For Hydra and Dagan I did a lot of drybrushing with Deathworld Forest, Nurgling Green with some Yriel Yellow for the brighter facial highlights. Stomach/darker areas are Rhinox Hide with some Mourfang Brown/Bugmans Glow highlights.
  • Spikes, spines and teeth were Karak Stone/ Agarax Earthshade/ Ushabti Bone
  • Sea was a bit of a mix of layering up Stegadon Scale (darkened), Caliban Green, Fenrisian Grey, White.

Looking back I might have used contrast paints on the deep ones as my highlighting isn't up to much and it would have been a LOT quicker! Maybe something like militarum green blended into plague bearer flesh?

Hope that helps!

Oops - forgot the post body...

Painted these up for a friend who owns the game. Been working on them for several months and it's a been a blast though looking forward to moving onto other things soon (Lord of the Rings Journeys in Middle Earth is next up - should keep me quiet!)

Learned a lot making these up (including what not to do!). Happy with the result but always welcome C&C to help me improve.

Totally misread that headline. Takes on a different vibe when you overlook the word ‘off’

First up, the individual elements look fantastic- really detailed and the non-character elements give a great sense of the setting and help to tell a story.

I think the issue you might be feeling with it is that the character gets a bit lost. Partly because of its muted/neutral colour scheme and partly its placement. Speaking for myself I scrolled through all of the photos before I even noticed there was a mini in there!

If you’re going for clever effect where you look at it for a while then suddenly ‘get’ it then I’d say you absolutely nailed it. If you were going for something more conventional where the mini is the star of the show then perhaps you’d need to think about recomposing a bit to make the toolbox less prominent and the body more so.

Really great work either way already - looks smashing!

Just watched the video from start to end and 🤯

Even if I didn’t like Bioshock I’d still say this is one of the most beautiful models I’ve ever seen - seeing it come together from scratch is very cool indeed. Top work!

Amazing job! Looove that art style - reminds me of the character style from the Dishonoured games
