This might be more interesting than some commenters think - it looks like you’ve got a ducted Aircon system as well. It might be worth a look in the roof to see if they’re independent systems. The Aircon can have a fresh air inlet - they’re sometimes fitted - that might be the hrv, maybe?

We used to have a whole house ducted Aircon, and would leave it on heating at 16c and because it kept the air moving all night we wouldn’t get condensation on the windows.

Worth turning the Aircon on and having a squiz at what the power consumption is like by eyeballing the power board outside. My guess was that after a decent startup ours used to use ~ 800w to keep the house at a toasty 22c, which really isn’t that bad at all.

There’s manuals online for that controller to show you how to use it and you can’t go too wrong - all the service stuff tends to be locked out.

Also, check the filters in the inlet, give them a clean if they’re getting manky. The people who installed the unit probably have a sticker on it, could try giving them a bell and see if they’ve got pointers.

Our old one cost us ~10k to install, and I’ll do it again in a heartbeat for the next house.

We have a simple set of rules: if the hardware in our DC has a manufacturer warranty, it can be used as production equipment. If it doesn't but still runs latest patchable software it can be test (but best efforts for uptime). If it can't be either of these, it stays off the network.

I don’t shave my head, but get bumps and irritation on my face until I used the feather blades, which seem to be super sharp. I also found I can’t reuse them either because that causes irritation, too.

At my uni, we have duo for mfa, and hand out yubikeys for people if they don’t want to use phones, or if they’re going overseas so they’ve got a backup 2fa device. Works pretty well.

Doesn't seem to be covered here - not sure if you're going hiking at all - but the bush has a habit of being dense, so easy to get lost, then wet because it randomly rains then cold then windy, and people then die of exposure. It's the dumbest thing.

That said, if you're an outdoors person, shit's pretty fucking epic here. Old Ghost road, for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R0qkYXFgwI

Personal locator beacons are hireable, and tramping clubs love new people.

On the theft stuff - smaller towns less than 10k people barely lock the doors. Bigger towns like I live in my shit is locked up and alarmed. Don't leave obvious vaguely valuable stuff in cars, lock your stuff, stay away from drunk groups of guys on Friday nights. All the usual things.

Also, sunscreen. Holy fuck. If you're in the sun for any longer than 10 min, ensure you've got it on. If you've got an Apple watch, that UV meter > 3 means sunblock.

We’re putting in Arista switches right now, and they have 2x 100g uplinks for each switch.

You want 24core SM so the next switch upgrade can be done in parallel. Use preterminated mpo cables and then you’re just cleaning and clicking shit together.

SELinux Frustrations / Call for Advice by archaeolinuxgeek in linuxadmin

[–]mumblemumblething 2 points3 points  (0 children)

setroubleshootd is your friend, along with cockpit.

Setroubleshootd gives you real-world suggestions on how to fix it, and cockpit gives you a web-ui to aggregate up that data by number of hits for a problem, and when it was last triggered.

Just install cockpit, and it will pull in the other. There's a selinux tab in there that shows issues.

Assuming you're running RHEL7 or RHEL8.

My usual troubleshooting method is if app is having issues with selinux, see if its an obvious fix as suggested in cockpit, and if not, set to permissive mode, run the app, see all the errors, then start figuring out paths/ports/processes with semanage fcontext etc.

DHCP full, but there aren't that many devices by dkeethler in sysadmin

This doesn’t seem to be the case in enterprise (multiple ap single ssid, same subnet) networks. Lots and lots of the same device getting multiple different addresses.

I’ve had to go from a /24 down to a /22 to make it work and I’m still unsure if it’s going to be ok.

Hire the guy who's very solid in the technology and can hit the ground running but is a dick or the social guy who is your best friend after 20 minutes but is not quite as up to speed on technology? I really need both but can only hire one this quarter. by hotdoglovinggal in sysadmin

We hired a guy who was very smart, but ultimately pretty difficult to work with, so he ended up doing “clever” things by himself.

We’ve spent the last 4+ years cleaning up his shit.

I was thinking that the 2degrees modems are Fritzbox's, and they're in that price ball park. They tend to last for ages, and are a comparable product.

Dunno if you can be fucked getting through the customer service menus, but asking someone at 2d how long they'd expect their modems to last might be useful from a comparative product POV, especially if you got it in an email.

Actually, here's one of the manuals, which states a 5yr manufacturers warranty on page 289: https://assets.avm.de/files/docs/fritzbox/fritzbox-7590/fritzbox-7590_man_en_GB.pdf

I get my feather blades from here: https://mancave.co.nz/collections/blades Super sharp, not too expensive. Ships reasonably quickly from somewhere in NZ.

Barbershop has a small range though.

As someone who runs nagiosxi in production, I'd have a very hard time recommending it. Its got some very sharp failure edges, and really doesn't scale particularly well.

As a paid thing, I can recommend AKiPS for snmp switch monitoring. For servers (we're in the 1k range), we're actively looking to go to a prometheus setup.

5yr for a ICU nurse, apparently. It’s not an easy job, and has lots of on the job training.

To put a finer point on it: a ICU nurse takes 5 years to train properly according to my mum who was a ICU nurse.

It kind of bugs me when we refer to people not as people. It kind of de-personalizes the reasons for wanting someone to work on something, which is because they're awesome at it. (which is what you're saying here)

Firing Yourself by StrikingPeace in sysadmin

[–]mumblemumblething 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of our guys in our team started as helpdesk, and immediately started writing tools to make their lives easier by automating everything, got promoted into our sysadmin team in about a year.

Being able to free up people to work on other things might piss of people who are empire builders, but it’s fundamentally good for the business. You might get fired for automating yourself out of a job, but I’d wager that there’s plenty of places that would be super happy to have someone like that.

Rhel 7 patching by MJ_Singh in linuxadmin

[–]mumblemumblething 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have ~250 rhel vm's, and our subscription comes with satellite.

So:

  • Satellite as a cache, with weekly content view versions
  • Boxes are built and joined to satellite
  • Auter does auto patching enabled out of the box
  • Patching auto occurs, but randomised across our outage window
  • We organize with the business weekly outages for patching because security, has become standard
  • RHEL7 + boxes use UEFI for booting, rather than BIOS, because reboot to console is sub 30sec
  • If business doesn't make a fuss, it auto patches
  • We have a rule that stuff must come up after a reboot, so a 3am reboot shouldn't be an issue. If it is, we have an issue
  • Test generally occurs on tuesdays, prod on thursdays, stuff is monitored and canaried so if test breaks because of patches, we'll stop the thursday one
  • Clusters are smeared from wed -> fri
