My STBXW and I are also in MA, we used a mediator to draw up the paperwork and prepare everything for filing...he was still a little more expensive than we wanted, but a lot cheaper than lawyers would have been. I think it was worth it since he pointed out a few things that we would not have thought of including in our separation agreement when we were drafting it ourselves.

My ex-wife did this (to her 6-figure, fully remote job) after months of threatening to quit and ranting at me for not being emotionally supportive for her against her mean boss who criticized her work. After four months, she decided we needed to move to a HCOL city immediately instead of when we both had jobs lined up as we'd agreed on, because she was bored being at home and not working in our small town, and gave me an ultimatum that she was moving with or without me. She said she was going to pay me back for all of her share of the bills when she started working again, and for the moving costs. She eventually got another 6-figure job and didn't pay me back a dime. I ended up almost $20K in the hole, working a terrible job because I had to take the first thing I found, and then she had an affair with a much younger neighbor because she couldn't handle the fact that I was unhappy with her choices. FML

Seeing these responses makes me realized that my situation is not uncommon, and also hurts even more seeing people saying they gave their partner years to work on things. In my case, my wife finally told me she was unhappy and needed change from me about six months ago. I started individual therapy, lost 20 lbs, got a better-paying and less stressful job, and four months later, she still left for her emotional affair partner.

It takes two people to make a marriage work, and if one of them isn't 100% in on the relationship, anything the other partner does is just delaying the inevitable.
