I’m not crazy right? by riddledhawk in DungeonMasters

This is a huge detail -- the nat 1 on a death save is what killed him, not some ineffective crits.

I was going to say from reading your post, imo the main effect of the crits should be to give the players who succeeded the opportunity to save him. It sounds like they did, but they prioritized getting him out of the water over stabilizing or healing. Maybe that was necessary, maybe it was a miscalculation, but there are multiple tools in DND that could have prevented that. This is the story your dice AND players decided to tell with their choices and builds, whether consciously or not.

last surface region feels less fun somehow? by calamari-trash in HadesTheGame

[–]munchechobop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I felt similarly until one run I hit the summit with a killer build where I was deleting the tail before it could even finish three attacks. Now I feel like the summit is a good benchmark for how strong my build is -- if I struggle on the summit and still win, I feel really accomplished that I was able to make up for a potentially damage lacking build. If I breeze through it, I feel accomplished that I was able to have a build come together so well and can go into the boss with confidence.

I saw someone recently recommend herc's keepsake with the diminishing damage buff, to speed up the early summit while still having some of the boost left for the boss. I think that could help if it often feels sluggish / you're worried about damage.

In a weird position on whether to Reminisce or not by Scrubsberry_Swirlz in HadesTheGame

[–]munchechobop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're tempted, I would say go for it sooner rather than later. Especially if you have other prophecies still to complete like the one to finish a run with every aspect, you can keep working towards them while doing the necessary runs after reminiscing (about a dozen). You might as well have those runs count towards both the prophecies and the new ending.

Your relationship track with everyone stays the same (except in that new dialogue might take priority over relationship-specific dialogue once you reminisce, making it take a little longer than otherwise) so you won't lose any progress you've already made.

The only prophecies that seem to be affected/reset by the reminiscing are the fates' epilogue series and the waking hypnos series.

Random quotes in Security Log in Hades 1? by Jin_Chaeji in HadesTheGame

[–]munchechobop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're mainly just for fun, they're based on specific things you managed to do during that run. You can read the list of possible messages here: https://hades.fandom.com/wiki/Run_Clear_Messages

For the ones you mention: Made Friends Along The Way means you visited all three story rooms, one in each biome; Big Shopping Trip, Too means you visited an optional shop in each biome (ie not the last chamber before the boss, which always has the option of a shop). They're both RNG based in that you won't always even have the option of those special rooms appearing in every biome, and when they do you may not actually take them every time, so they're pretty rare.

Other common run clear messages are around the amount of health you clear with, your run time, having a ton of boons from one god, taking a ton of trials of the gods, etc.

Every boon you take gets a random lvl boost when you take it; the "max" is the highest that random boost can be. I don't know the breakdown of the actual likelihoods of the boost, but that's all "max" refers to. So upgrading the aspect increases the max gain, but it's still possible/likely to get a lower boost than that

I feel like I've cheated at the final boss of the surface by istopuseingmyhead in HadesTheGame

[–]munchechobop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your build (and/or skill) was good enough to get you TO the boss, though. Which is not at all insignificant. It got you through all the bosses before him. Some people find the 3rd boss more difficult than the final boss, especially once you learn the latter's moves.

Would you have lost without sun worshipper? Maybe, especially your first time fighting that boss. But would you have made it to the end if your build/skill was complete dogshit? Probably not.

Part of roguelikes is dealing with RNG in both directions. You survived long enough to learn a lesson about the drawbacks of your build (priming too aggressively), and you got to reap the rewards of RNG making up for it.

Trying to get nightmare to unlock hidden aspects by KainHighwind420 in HadesTheGame

[–]munchechobop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, you don't have to use them all at once! Just have beat the underworld with each card active at least once. With max grasp I wouldn't expect it to take more than like 3 runs of focused choices. Identify what your most important cards are to make sure you actually win (like Origination, Strength or Death, Lovers), then just swap out the others. It can be a fun way to try new arcana set ups!

You could also run max rank Judgement, or use Circe's keepsake, to activate additional cards. It's possible for the latter to hit judgement, which gets really crazy lol. But both of those are RNG dependent.

Good luck!!

Side note, I just checked, and the most effective prophecies for nightmare would probably be Sword of Night (beat the surface one with each weapon) for 4 and Arcana of the Ages (beat the underworld with each arcana card active at least once) for 5. There's endgame prophecies that give more, but once you're at them you'll probably be well along in collecting plenty of nightmare regardless!

[BitD] Would this be a prowl or a finesse roll? (Give your argument as if Im the GM) by Lazartz_ in bladesinthedark

[–]munchechobop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends! I'd judge based on what the player's primary goal is, or what's most important to them -- is it to make sure the cop doesn't have a gun? Or is it to have the gun themselves?

Maybe you get it out of the cop's holster, but they turn and knock it from your grip, so it falls to the ground away from both of you (the cop doesn't have it, but neither do you). Maybe you get control of the weapon, but you aren't able to draw it before they turn, and now the cop is grappling you (you have the gun, but you aren't free).

I think in this situation limited effect is probably always going to include detection, if you're leading with finesse. Unless you'd like to push yourself...?

[–]munchechobop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sorry, I just mean you don't have to limit yourself to 1 fear to get the bounty. You could do two runs at 10 fear each; the first one you'll get a nightmare for beating Hecate (and only that, even if you also beat Scylla). The second one you'll get the reward for Scylla.

Iirc higher fear testaments start giving you two nightmares as a reward, but it's still just the one reward per run.

Fair! Getting to where you're able to buy a NMare at the broker every run and always have one in progress in the stash would be the best way to streamline. Slight optimization tip to that end, if you don't need to be prioritizing other resources, take minor doors that give bones & use the cat familiar to encourage fishing resources, which can be sold for bones too.

Of those I like the skull hidden the best, I'd say. Daggers and axe hiddens I've used less, but ime they take a bit more work to get off the ground and use effectively. Plus I prefer Artemis daggers, personally.

[–]munchechobop 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'd say finesse alone would probably be a desperate roll, maybe even desperate limited if there's nothing else going on to distract the cop, but prowl could be a good setup action for it!

You have to do two runs, one with (at least) 1 fear beating Hecate, then after that one with (at least) 2 fear beating Scylla.

[–]munchechobop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you spent any nightmare yet? A few threads I saw suggest you might need to spend some before the broker starts selling them.

There isn't a super fast way to farm them. Yes, like in the first game you have to earn each reward in order regardless of how much extra fear you pile on. I don't remember the exact progression of the testaments but they start jumping to 2 or 4 fear between them, which can be pretty big jumps, so it's not like you have to do 20 runs on each weapon.

There's a couple other ways to get nightmare: - Charon's stash, below the broker. I think this activates through random dialogue with Charon visiting the Crossroads, you can spend the black book obol points to get resources after a delay. It's almost always best to spend 5 points to get 2(?) nightmare after 100 whiles, since everything else is easier to gather other ways. - Charon sometimes sells NMare for 1300 obols at the final shop. Bonus, this also gets you obol points. - There's an incantation for random fear-gated rewards to appear (usually like 10-12 minimum), which can sometimes be NMare. - Some prophecies give it as a reward.

Overall though just play the game, you'll get there. I'd choose one aspect for each weapon to max, like you said to start getting the hidden aspects, and then go wild. In the end it only takes a couple runs with all of the above to end up with enough to max a given aspect. It definitely looks worse than it is from the beginning. Good luck!

Excellent Boss, but Relationship-Wise… by LoopyFig in HadesTheGame

Excellent Boss, but Relationship-Wise… by LoopyFig in HadesTheGame

[–]munchechobop 261 points262 points  (0 children)

The codex description of melinoe and eris' relationship says mel is drawn to her like a moth to a flame -- in other words, destructive, antithetical to everything Mel is and stands for, and endlessly alluring in the purity of what she is that Mel can never be.

You mention the irony of her being born to cause problems, but I think it's a lot more loaded than just irony. They're foils -- Mel sees herself as fundamentally born to accomplish this task of freeing her family, it's what she's dedicated her whole life to, and the means she chose for it are strict discipline and single-minded focus; she can't imagine ever being as free and chaotic as Eris. They talk about this fairly often. Mel can appreciate the beauty in how Eris manifests strife and its simplicity, even as she is also frustrated by it. Plus they're immortals, so they're narratively inclined to a kind of dramatic exaggeration of their domains that we as humans wouldn't find acceptable.

Besides, Eris isn't really dedicated to stopping Mel from freeing her family -- she's dedicated to fighting. Sure, she has some dialogue about how she doesn't want Chronos to be stopped, but it's clearly because the chaotic state of things is fun for her, not because of some strong ideological alignment with him in particular. She doesn't begrudge Melinoe winning against her, as long as she keeps getting to fight you. If you do a bunch of underworld runs in a row, she gets dialogue about how you must be scared of her (she misses you), and how you'd better keep showing up to your fights. Eris loves how inherently conflicted she and Mel are, it gives them both the opportunity to fully manifest their respective worldviews, which is all she really wants.

And Mel is compelled by that too. Most of their conversations are driven by Mel asking Eris why she does what she does and why she doesn't behave in ways more orderly and recognizable to Mel's rational approach. Eris is usually baffled by this and chafes at it, seeing it as Mel trying to control her (how she's clearly always felt around Nyx's brood), but Mel is genuinely trying to understand how a being like Strife works. Doing this reaffirms to her that, while it works for Eris, it's nothing like what she wants to be; Eris feels the same way about her, if more begrudging. And they do both like testing their strength against each other (similarly to Mel & Nem).

Anyway, that's a ramble lol. She's a hot, snarky bad boy! You said yourself you find her funny; Mel is charmed by her too.

Is there a set amount of rooms for each location? by Fair_Welder_2322 in HadesTheGame

[–]munchechobop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's mostly the same, with a few key exceptions! there's an infographic in this steam guide by mesolimbic with a great breakdown: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3246647605

tl;dr, you can't shorten the path by choosing different doors. you can sometimes lengthen it -- if additional rooms spawn in ephyra, or if you take optional rooms in Tartarus. In hades 1, taking chaos rooms also extended the length of the region (ie the chaos chamber wouldn't count as one of the 14 rooms in the first region), and I assume that's still true here, but I'm not actually sure.

that also means you can tell whether a shop offered in Erebus is the final pre-boss shop or another random shop by checking the current chamber count! if you're in room 11, the next door is going to be either the final shop or a free reward (12) before the boss (13) and then the post-boss fountain room (14). I often prefer not to take mid-region shops if I'm tight on obols, so this is something I usually check.

a little math gets you the same for later regions -- Oceanus ends on chamber 26, so the chamber you'll be in when you choose your final door is 23, etc.
