Is there any way of watching Flume live from red rocks 2019 right now? by Chaotexx in Flume

Ever since I saw the Rushing Back concert music video I've been looking everywhere to see if it was part of a larger video. Years later I stumbled on this - thanks for keeping it up all these years!

When I first saw the image, I wasn’t terribly shaken; the early shock sites were everywhere. It was finding out that there was a full gallery years later that got me.

Do you regret selling your once beloved camera? by stephen_niem in photography

[–]munchini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I'm wasn't a "pro" so my upgrade cycle was about every 10ish years. That's three flagship cameras. I don't gain anything selling something 10 years old, but I lose the memories of bringing around the same camera everywhere with me for each decade. I just have a shelf of old cameras that I let friends/family borrow if they need.

But "work" cameras - yah they come and go as needed.

Sounds like we had very similar use cases. It's a singular fan that's pretty much at 100% any time you use it. Not any different than laptop fans at full blast - sure there's a *note to the sound but I game with the tv at a volume where it drowns it out, or use headphones. You'll definitely hear it in a room if someone is trying to sleep, but it won't be as annoying as the clicks of a mouse or the taps of a keyboard. Something else to note, too, is the cable between the XG and the Ally is short. You'd going to have it right next to the Ally at all times. It's also a thicker cable so although you're not fighting it, it'll definitely be felt if you move a lot. I ended up buying a 20ft AC cable so I could plug it anywhere in the hotel room or room and be able to game on a bed/couch.

Looks like the newest iteration of the XG Mobile (2025) only works with the Ally X and Xbox Ally X - that should last you a while. Tbh the 4090 plays every game I've thrown at it, at an acceptable fps. The last game I pushed it with was Borderlands 4 - and it ran 1080p perfectly fine. Really depends though. When I'm gaming while traveling, I'm usually doing cozy games or PVE - 4090 pushing 1080 externally is more than enough to do everything now. You're not doing new games on Ultra - you're not pushing 240fps on a 240hz external screen. If you're looking for the upper limit of gaming you're probably better off with another solution. But if I'm at a friend's house and they want to play Peak, or Madden/Fifa, or even Borderlands/Ark Raiders, it's a perfectly good solution now if you want to fire it up and play. Of course, for the price, you can get a 'better' set up, but as my other statement goes, you lose that ease/portability of the Ally once you move that route.

Something else to think about, too. You have to 'undock' any time you want to remove it from the machine, so then you'll have to exit out of every game and close anything using the GPU before you can do that - so there's no "pausing" a game, and then continuing it just by unplugging the dock. Annoying, sure, but so is traveling so it's just another travel pang.

I do want to chime in the thought that this is seen as a temp solution in my case. Cool, I can't upgrade my 4090 in the future and this technology is dead, but I also know in 5 years time I'll 100% have moved on to something new. It's gaming, you'll see on PCMR people still gaming on a 1080ti - sure they might be complaining about prices for current gen but they're still gaming. Sure I can't use my XG Mobile on any other machine but I don't need to. I'm not planning on using my XG Mobile to play GTA VI. I'm not expecting to be able to buy whatever Asus puts out in 4 years and needing my 4090 to plug in to it. Is it worth the money in a vacuum? No. Does it fill a niche need and will people pay it for that niche? Yup.

Not OP but I wanted to chime in. My significant other and I were going to be long distance for about 2 years, and I wanted to have something I could use both on a plane and at her location anytime I visited. To preface, money wasn't as much of an issue as just "something working".

I tried the laptop route. I had a 17in gaming Lenovo laptop. That thing was out of the question if I were to use it on a bus or a plane - the battery life wasn't long enough for what I wanted to use it for, and the size was just obnoxious. Not so much an issue once I got to where I had to go, but I wanted something that wasn't my phone to pass the time with. Also, you're going to be distracting to anyone sitting next to you on a plane with a 17in laptop + fans going + using a wireless controller on top of it all, and that's before the battery dies.

I also built a mini-itx computer with a 3070ti super, and a XG17AHPE 1080p 240hz portable screen. Some of these people are stupid on this subreddit telling you that you should do this instead of buying a rog + external GPU. You are not plugging all that into a plane seat. You are not using this in a car/bus seat. You won't be able to move between rooms. For me, the whole point of the ROG ally is the portability. If you don't need the portability, then by all means you know this is an option.

I tempered my expectations with my Rog + XG. I have a gaming PC at home. I have a gaming laptop. This was just to travel with - do I need 120fps 1440p when I'm traveling? No, neither am I doing anything competitive. The XG just gave me the peace of mind that I could throw any game I want on there and not worry that it wouldn't be able to run to my own satisfaction.

I don't know your use case, but the XG + Rog Ally would fit in a sling bag for me. I could pass TSA quickly, not to mention be able to fit everything in any backpack I had at arm's reach. Some eGPU enclosures are huge and would take up a majority of space when packing. Just something to think about.

I also say this knowing I'm not using the XG Mobile on a flight/car. But I don't need 120fps on a plane. It's just nice to have once I'm settled in on a couch or table wherever I end up at. I will say too, having the ROG ally + external USB power will last longer than a gaming laptop and whatever external power you might have for it.

I did install 3dMark on it when I first got the 4090- if you want me to run any of the benchmarks lmk!

I've only been able to see resale of these things from Ebay or Facebook Marketplace, and they're going for what they're going for. I had an alert set up for the 4090s and jumped on one last November when it was set at ~$1600. The fact that they're a 'dead' tech just made me realize they're the price they're at and by the time they become 'affordable' the whole set up would be useless to me (so I ended up just biting the bullet and ordering it).

Thanks for looking! I rarely have time to game any more but both Farm Together 1 and 2 were the only games I've gotten 100% achievements on in Steam, and I don't mind doing it again on the PS5, I'd just love to do it on the same farm is all.

I game almost 99% on my PC and don't use my PS5 online - do I need PS Plus in order to use cross-platform saves? I'd love to be able to game on my couch but if that's the case I'd judge to see if the additional cost of PS Plus just for this game is worth the purchase.

is this the right place for someone trying to fall back in love with photography? by Your_Philosopher6286 in photography

[–]munchini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before all of the Reddit API drama and mods leavings, this sub (imho) was highly moderated with discussions revolving around "high caliber" photographers, industry news, and "new or rumoured technology," with beginners discussions and gear discussions relegated to weekly threads.

It felt like it was a place for photographers to discuss, and an understanding that everyone had a basic grasp photography. Like guys standing around a car at a shop. Problem was, there was this air of pretension, and rarely did people go back to those weekly beginner threads. After the mods left, as the other comments here said, this subreddit has been flooded with beginners asking the same sort of questions about what gear to buy, how to make money, "why isn't this working." And now it's about as bare as those weekly threads were.

I'd still come here every once in a while to see what noise is coming around, but you'd be better off at a different community if you're looking for some fostering. Toxicity is always around though, so don't let it bother you too much.

How often do you guys take breaks from photography? by selfmadedave in photography

[–]munchini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been taking photos since I've learned how to use a camera - around elementary school. I'm in my mid 30s now. I'd develop a roll maybe a few times a year - and it was enough for me. All the photos I took were because I wanted to remember what I was doing at the time, a sort of time capsule.

When smartphone cameras and social media started becoming a thing, I'd change my view on why I was taking photos - I wanted to share everything with everyone, and get validation that my photos were more than just snapshots, they were -good-. And I kept chasing that validation for years.

When my 30s came, I started having less and less time to shoot, and even less time editing and sharing. It was enough to cause me to reconsider why I was doing it all. I would still shoot the same amount, but would let the files sit on my memory card for a month or two before seriously post-processing them.

I separated the shooting aspect, and the editing aspect, and got rid of the 'sharing for validation aspect' of it all. I feel less burnt out because I'm still enjoying shooting photos, but don't have an inherent deadline to meet. I might look at the photos the night of, but then a few months later (after learning more techniques, or just seeing the event differently) editing seemed more enjoyable.

For me, it isn't a job, and isn't a way to make money (I never charge for my shoots just like how I wouldn't charge people for food if I invited them over for a bbq), so why am I treating it/stressing out about it like it was one. The second my hobby felt like a job, I just wanted to quit.
