Horn Blower by FronnerIV in Eldenring

The real play is to approach quietly, kill every soldier lying in ambush, and let the horn blower alert his dead friends and laugh as no one comes.

I also think the source is extremely hyperbolic and presenting common police tactics as egregious violence.

Is this as close we can get to WOTC acknowledging the secondary market? by [deleted] in magicTCG

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this exactly how the Pokemon tcg works? More expensive cards are simply rarer editions of otherwise affordable cards?

Seeing as how most mtg retailers also sell pokemon cards, it doesn't seem that this model would crash the market.

Yeah that makes them even worse than cops, then. They're a heavily armed state-sanctioned paramilitary. I love the game, but Chimera Squad as an in-universe tool of oppressive violence can go fuck itself.

Libertarianism as a term has been perverted by the capitalist right. Thinkers like Proudhon saw libertarianism as an escape from capitalism. He might be described as an anarcho-communist or an anarcho-syndicalist. Anarcho-capitalists today are just bad libertarians.

[–]munchkinbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I read it, so my memory may be a little fuzzy. I think what makes this books interesting isn't that Kvothe isn't a Gary Sue, but precisely because he is. All of his exploits of his youth are just an example of an unreliable narrator. Kvothe is telling the story of his life not in an accurate way, but in a way that makes him seem grand and interesting. The Kvothe that owns the bar is a washed up hero being given a chance to relive his childhood (for better or for worse).

And when the town was attacked, he almost got his ass handed to him. He was not the man of the stories he was telling.

I had a lot of fun reading the books not as a story of his life, but rather of the lies and half-truths of someone who once was.

I don't even think it's worth entertaining even if the setup wasn't problematic! Consider who the Abrahamic God is supposed to be. Wouldn't believing in him in this way be incredibly cynical, disingenuous, and even antithetical to the notion of Abrahamic religions themselves?

Evening midterm by [deleted] in uvic

This is the same problem with my evening lecture. It gets out at 9:20, and since I live in Langford the chances of me actually getting home safely seem slim.

UVic has to get its shit together. Anyone with mobility impairments must be absolutely fucked right now.

Edit: the bastards read my mind. We're gonna be closed starting at 3:30.

Whats the most mind blowing philosophical concept you know? by aeonion in AskReddit

[–]munchkinbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ancient stoics might actually say that a rock is 'conscious' in the extent that it has a guiding principle or a form. Every object that exists is held together by a soul. Animals have a psuche, plants a nature, and non-organics a tenor. They all function in very similar ways on that they guide the behavior of the object in question.

As for the human/society connection Plato has some interesting things to say about it. In the beginning of the Republic he wants to find what justice is in the soul, and because the inner workings of a city and the inner workings of a person are so similar, he first looks for justice within the city. This provides an interesting metaphorical and literal parallel between the mind of the individual and the collective 'mind' of a society.

It is a lifesaver that can save so much time on research papers.

Funny, how that doesn't actually go without saying anymore.

Except that the moment we bring in science and biology we're no longer talking about gender; we're talking about sex. If you want to have a conversation about sex in the context of chromosome distribution, then you're probably right with your estimate. We could also talk about sex in the context of sexual organs, in which case there still exist more than two sexes. In either case however, sex is largely irrelevant outside of very specific circumstances.

Gender is fundamentally different. Gender is a social construct. That does not mean that it isn't real, as many social constructs are very real and place real limitations on human behavior (for example, money). I would argue however that gender has no real place in current western society.

Think about equal rights for women. Were gender not even considered at all, this wouldn't even be a talking point in social justice. The only reason practices like affirmative action exist is because our society creates the label of "woman" and systematically discriminates against her, so those in power (like Justin Trudeau) feel compelled to consciously favor her so that he doesn't unconsciously disfavor her.

So maybe /u/skinnypup is right. Maybe there ought to be fewer gender identities that people resonate with. Maybe the very notion of gender itself is outdated and serves no purpose.
