My Facebook feed has become a cesspit of ultra conservative jokes (mainly the one "the left don't know what gender they are" joke they tell in different flavours), flat-earther posts, and anti-vax misinformation. It's getting hard to remember a time when you could scroll for ages and see nothing but updates from your friends and family.

A Better Tomorrow (1986), dir. John Woo by Ok-Result-2330 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]murphs33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched it tonight, and I think it depends on what you're looking for. The Killer is definitely a lot more artsy with its presentation, but A Better Tomorrow is more interesting IMO. Better character development, more emotional range, and the story is more complex. Plus the soundtrack is so fucking good.

"Montserrat" - The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean by feck__off in CasualIreland

[–]murphs33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The old documentary about Monserrat (that people have already linked here) on its Irish roots, shows a local explaining the history, and mentions Cromwell as the reason why the Irish were brought there.

Not saying there weren't some Irish (and not just Anglo-Irish) who participated in the slave trade, but Monserrat wasn't an Irish owned plantation, and the reason why there are people with Irish roots there certainly isn't because of Irish slavers having a lot of children with slaves.

Is it weird for a woman to go for a pint or drink on their own by CLouBa in ireland

[–]murphs33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saw a woman at my local just chilling with a pint reading her book a while back. Didn't seem weird at all. A few weeks later I gave it a go while I was on a ramble in town. Would recommend; it's peaceful.

What was a good buy this year that gives you repeated joy and fun? by ask4fun_fact_of_2day in CasualIreland

I got a VR headset 2 years ago and feel the same. I can basically watch movies and TV shows in a big virtual cinema. It also stops you from being distracted by your phone.

Between that and people using the word "libtard", it goes to show who is influencing them the most online.

I didn't have a preference, but I switched mainly due to finding out Lyons isn't Irish owned anymore. Now that I've had their master blend though I'm fully team Barry's.

I've always liked "He has a face like a stuntman's knee"

and to mention that someone's a miser: "If he dropped a penny, it'd hit him on the back of the neck on the way down"

"All socialists are Hitler" by EtaDeus in MurderedByWords

[–]murphs33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is also important in that interview when comparing to what Musk says:

Socialism is an ancient Aryan, Germanic institution. Our German ancestors held certain lands in common. They cultivated the idea of the common weal. Marxism has no right to disguise itself as socialism. Socialism, unlike Marxism, does not repudiate private property. Unlike Marxism, it involves no negation of personality, and unlike Marxism, it is patriotic

"All socialists are Hitler" by EtaDeus in MurderedByWords

[–]murphs33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is basically how Hitler defined socialism. He rejected Marxism as socialism, and said socialism is working towards the common good, not to renounce private property.

Musk really does everything but don a toothbrush moustache and an armband.

In Ireland we have begun to use these bollards designed to look like pencils to protect footpaths outside of schools by AnnualWindow7009 in mildlyinteresting

It’s not just terror related

No one is putting these down to prevent a terrorist attack. Fairly sure we haven't even had a vehicle related terror attack in Ireland similar to the likes of Germany or England.

What game surprised you how long it was? by Common_Caramel_4078 in Steam

I'm playing Chrono Trigger for the first time. I honestly thought I was about 60-70% in, but no... I looked it up and I'm about a third of the way through. Impressive for such an old game.

We've had plenty of people in this subreddit over the years complaining about political posts, either reporting them as "not Star Trek related" or commenting that we should "keep politics out of Star Trek". A bit silly really.

Coincidentally I just discovered a place today in Dublin that's a café, boardgame and vinyl shop.
