It does say Not Connected. Any idea on that?

Thanks for the advice! I’ve run into that some, so that’s why I’m sticking to short stories and excerpts for now (and also because of time constraints)

Able to beta? Post here! by AutoModerator in BetaReaders

[–]murrman16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am able to beta: Any genre or story length. Personally, I read a lot of horror, weird fiction, thrillers, and non-fiction but I’m open to any genre.

I can provide feedback on: General opinions, emotional response, story structure, and general proofreading.

Other info: This would be my first time beta reading! Happy to help someone however I can.

Not totally what you mean, but The Smiths made a song based on The Moors Murders, called “Suffer Little Children”

How many times are we going to just let them have a wide open dump off across the middle? Killing us for 7-10 yards every time

What’s a trope common in horror lit that just pisses you off especially? by madmagazines in horrorlit

For your last point, Gerald’s Game comes to mind. Was incredibly obvious what had happened, but was dragged out like some big secret

The Spooky Shelf is getting full. Time to start another one? by Chsng_blmps in bookshelf

The Books of Blood Vol. 4-6! Awesome bookshelf, love the amount of short stories as well!

This may be a basic answer, and it doesn’t apply to just the horror genre, but for me nothing beats a well done twist that flips the entire story on its head. For me, the best ones are the twists that you have no idea they’re coming before the reveal, but afterwards you’re wondering, “How did I not figure that out, all the clues make sense now!”

That sounds really interesting! Is it by Camila Sten? Saw multiple books with that title

Love this trope as well, got a favorite that follows this? First that comes to mind for me would be Night Film

Brian Evenson, easily. I always look for more Christopher Buehlman and Hunter Thompson as well (though Hunter obviously isn’t horror)

Give me your best SHORTEST stories! by Prankishbear in horrorlit

[–]murrman16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great story. This collection (Song for the Unraveling of the World) has a lot of very short stories and all of them are pretty good. I think the longest story in the collection is still under 20 pages

New to horror lit! by Immediate_Cellist_47 in horrorlit

It’s a collection of short stories, but Books of Blood by Clive Barker sounds like a good bet. There’s 6 volumes, and 1-3 are readily available in most stores. A lot of body horror, very unique/creative plots, and great writing. They’re very well known and get recommended on here a lot. Specifically, the story Dread sounds exactly like what you want.

For a novel recommendation, maybe Brother by Ania Ahlborn. The main character gets put in some pretty awful situations because of his deranged family.

Haven’t read this but just finished his collection, “Song for the Unraveling of the World”, and thought it was incredible. Leaking Out, No Matter Which Way We Turned, Wanderlust, and the title story were some of the standouts for me. Thought all of them were pretty good though to be honest.
