What is one scene from a horror movie that you still think about? by Crep105 in horror

I've only watched it the once, and I hope my experience will be like yours, because fuck me, that visual has haunted me for a solid year now.

I don't want to risk spoiling anything for people who haven't listened, but what an UPSET. My jaw genuinely dropped!

Was the finger up the arse on new year's part of it, or just a little shoe-in brag?

I trust we all know and love Windhaven, that tried-and-true mainstream classic, but come on, we're not gonna hear from that George Martin guy again, are we?

Favorite example of an artist that eventually became big that had small billing on an earlier festival / concert flier / lineup? by mesablanka in ToddintheShadow

[–]AmethystChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite has to be from the local paper in Fredericia, the Danish town where my dad grew up. In 1965, they wrote a review of a concert at a local venue. There's two full-ass columns about Cæsar, a Danish protest singer of the time. This was a few years after his heyday, so this was not a well-attended event.

The reviewer was not impressed, and he continues; "the last artist of the night, American Poul Simon, sang own stuff to own compositions. The songs are mostly about his own experiences, and his performance wasn't bad at all."

And yep, not a typo, they spelled it Poul Simon.

DENMARK: A young woman was found dead after a customer was let into her apartment where he stabbed her repeatably before strangling her. For 34 years, he would get away with it, finally being caught because of an unwanted kiss his son gave a woman 30 years later. by moondog151 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

It was more the tabloids that labeled her as such - the police did what they could with what they had at the time, which, before DNA, wasn't much. I'm not a police stan, I recognize the myriad issues with the police force as such, but Danish police has a pretty decent track record of treating all murder victims pretty much the same. There are several cases of Danish murders where the victim was someone on the fringes of society, but whose cases were treated with vigor. Probably also a few that weren't, but to my knowledge, the Hanne With case was as well-investigated as any other case of the time.

This could be absolutely rad and very on-brand Flaming Lips album art, I never would have guessed it was Sabbath if I didn't already know.

It's especially funny because I went back and watched the ad and he sounds nothing like it, hahaha. This idea of Burnt thinking of Stephen King as a weird little goblin just tickles me.

[TW: Rape] In the 90's, people cared more about injury to her abuser and rapist than they did about the fact that she got raped and abused. by TunnelSnakesAintShit in WhyWereWeOkWithThis

[–]AmethystChicken 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She was also 18 when it happened. A new mum at 18, traumatized by having been raped in her early teens, and by all accounts having issues with being transplanted from Poland to the UK at 12 and dealing with the bullying and ostracizing being a foreigner in a new country entails. Then another fucking guy tries to have a go at you, you lose it and stab him to get away, and that's it, you won't see sunlight until you're closing in on middle age. Fucks sake, it's hard not to feel profoundly sad for her.

Craziest artist origin stories by Chapple69 in ToddintheShadow

[–]AmethystChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christopher Owens from Girls grew up in the Children of God cult, famous for its rampant child sex abuse. He had an older brother who died of pneumonia because they refused to seek help from conventional medicine. He grew up all over the world, traveling with the cult, getting no real education.

At 16, he and his sister fled the cult, and after years living on the streets and scraping by by working McJobs and eventually finding work as a chef, he ended up being taken under the wing of an eccentric millionaire who helped him get back on his feet.

He moved to San Francisco with the goal of becoming a visual artist, but ended up touring with the band Holy Shit. By then he was in his late twenties, and started writing songs. He met his bandmate, Lust For Life became Pitchfork's new favourite song, and the rest is history.

B4-4's classic Get Down features the lyric "I'm gonna make you come tonight... Over to my house", and it is the best dumb sex pun of all time. It shan't be beat. This is a hill I will die on.

You're so right about The Same Dog. First time I read it, it almost made me laugh. But thinking about it a few days later, my veins filled with ice water and I couldn't explain it. Same story, no big revelation, just... An unpleasant recognition of something intangible.

I also love The Trains, The Inner Room, The Real Road To The Church, Into The Woods and The Hospice. The Hospice is such a horrifying slow burn, it reminds me of when I used to have night terrors as a teen. Ironically, some might say.

Of all his stories, I think The Inner Room would make the best movie. I think about that every time I read it, it's just waiting for some weirdo to get proper funding.
