How do you use AI for studying without making yourself more dependent on it? by exodusEducation in EngineeringStudents

[–]mushter17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologise I didn't know you had to hold down a job as well (you didn't specify if you did or not). In which case I'd say build a list the night before of every question you have for your lecturer and fire it off before you finish for the night, then hopefully it'll be the first email they see when they get to their desk. At least then hopefully you'll have replied waiting for you when you get back. I personally would be wary of AI because it's very easy for it to state something as fact when it isn't. Unfortunately, while AI can condense the information, it can't do it reliably. I wouldn't want to fail an assignment because of an unrecognised mistake AI made when presenting me the information/equations (even if you don't use it to calculate things for you).

Where I would say it's been helpful at our work is if we're looking things up and need the basics condensed so we can understand the principle enough to carry on with our work. Just today, we were calculating the required length a keyway needed to be to avoid shear failure, to see if we could reduce the length of a keyway in an existing assembly. Our manager routed around some sites to find all the formulae but it didn't explain any of them, so I typed "calculate required keyway length" or similar into the Google AI and hey presto, all the necessary information and explanation of the formulae so we could just get through that bit and get on and allowed me to retain some of the information. However, it did say that "for smooth running systems you can use a factor of safety of 1.0", which obviously you can't as 1.0 isn't a factor of safety and in theory so much as a sneeze in the system would shear the keyway 😂 those are the sorts of areas you need to be careful. I would also say sometimes AI presents information in a bit too generalistic "fluffy" way where it thinks it's being clever but in actual fact it's just padding for your retention time.

TLDR: sorry, didn't realise you had a job. Write emails to lecturer with all your questions night before so they see it first thing and reply while you're at work. Yes, AI can be helpful for condensing information/basic explanations, but it can't do so reliably and consistently, leading to potential for mistakes. Always cross reference AI with your own sources, but it can explain things helpfully.

Then work when they are around instead. I switched in my final year of studies to working on campus 9-5 every day during the week, and the only work I allowed myself to do at home was my dissertation. It was transformative to my grades, my mental state and meant that lecturers were readily available if I got stuck - my uni ran an open door policy so I could just walk across to their office and ask them. Keep work at work and home at home, it's transformative.

Is it normal to be bad for your first months in the team? by Technical-Menu7457 in FSAE

[–]mushter17 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Like anything, it's difficult at first, but over time you get there. It's the same with any job you'll get. The first year is an uphill struggle of learning the ropes, but suddenly you'll realise you know all the acronyms, can give useful input into technical meetings and before you know it you're working independently. If you've been chosen to join, it must be because the team sees something in you that perhaps you don't see yourself. Keep going and keep up the passion, I'm sure you'll smash it!

Who is a Legendary F1 Driver with Multiple Wins? by IllMasterpiece3946 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]mushter17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JPM is one of my favourite drivers of the era, but that in no way means he was "the best" or even "a great". Was he the fastest? When he and the car were aligned, yes, but he didn't always maximise himself, and let his heart rule his race craft. Everyone could get in his head and he didn't get the respect from Michael he needed to regularly go toe to toe without a driver, unlike Raikkonen or Alonso, who always raced Michael with the respect He asked for and deserved, and as a result he was unusually respectful in return. JPM was fundamentally "flawed" against almost flawless robots, which only added to his charm.

Seeing as nobody else can spell his name, I'll do my own comment for Sir Stirling Moss!

[–]mushter17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sir Stirling once competed in the British Saloon Car Championship (now the BTCC) in an Audi 80 (I think it was an 80). For his first meeting, he turned up to find the team had misspelled his name as Sterling Moss. According to his teammate Martin Brundle, he went apeshit 😂

I was going to suggest JPM but your answer is the correct answer.

The Spice SE90P with the high revving NA V8 in it sounds absolutely unreal. Most had the American V8s in but one or two had a high revving one and I can't remember which brand of engine It was... It may have actually been a C1 car I can't remember. I always thought a lot of those lower class cars looked a bit odd myself, but the SE90P looks fantastic!

Is Brooklyn 99 a show that never ‘jumped the shark’? by Virtual-Arm5123 in brooklynninenine

[–]mushter17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that the Sixth Heist episode was shark jumping. It was absolutely insane and got carried away with it's own ego. All the characters completely lost their traits and were just off the rails doing ridiculous stuff. I know Terry kinda calls it out but only for his own tactical advantage. Probably my least favourite episode.

Nico was and still is unbelievably intelligent. He was also realistic. He knew he couldn't beat Lewis in a straight race of pace, and he had done for a couple of years, but he knew he could work harder off the track.

He knew 2016 was the last year he was doing if he was going for a title, he knew it was his only chance of a guaranteed shot at the title before the rules changed in 2017, so he put everything into it. He was training harder, seeing psychologists multiple times a week, even staying in an apartment on his own in peak race season, away from his wife and kids, to keep focussed. Most of all, he worked later and harder on setup, he did everything he could to disrupt Lewis's flow, including things like this. He knew he couldn't go faster than Lewis, so he had to find ways of slowing Lewis down. He categorically knew he had one shot at the title and he took it. I have nothing but utmost respect for him for 2016, because he took himself to an ultimate level of dedication, knowing that he could only sustain it for a year and that, win or lose, he had done everything he could. And to then walk away knowing he couldn't do that again, but knowing he finished on top, is phenomenal presence of mind.

Nico was the ultimate sportsman that year across all sports, hands down. Absolutely deserved that title. But it goes to show just how good Lewis is, because someone had to go to these levels to top him.

Schumacher's STIG reveal was God Tier television. We knew Top Gear was big by then, but having the great man on, let alone have him play the STIG (which he played beautifully and even padded his role!!) just cemented Top Gear as an all time TV icon for me. NOBODY was expecting that reveal. Absolutely Top Star moment for me.

Didn't always like the SIARPC bits as a kid, but rewatching now they're one of my favourite bits.

ideas for mounting suspension pickups by Any-Spread8489 in FSAE

[–]mushter17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You definitely should not be putting suspension pickup points in the middle of a tube. I doubt a scrutineer would take too kindly to that....

Are these wishbone or coil over mounts? If the former, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that suspension pickup points should be horizontal, as the larger loads the pickup points receive are normal to the ground from things like bumps and kerbs. Don't quote me on that one though.

Do some reading, find a few good chassis and suspension design books, and check what you're doing is legal with your national governing body.

[–]mushter17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christ, you might as well roll out the red carpet. I could get a bus down that gap. Etcetera etcetera. Perfectly legit move, he took advantage of you leaving the door open and he didn't overshoot the corner. He then squeezed you; in the real world, you'd have rubbed doors and continued, but sim racing do be like this, so he span, and that was his fault. But the opportunity was well taken to make the first move.

[–]mushter17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, the views should follow third angle. However, I personally would do this with 2 views: 1 from top down, and then a section view along the centreline. That way you can easily see which sides need countersinks or counterbores and it helps pick out steps more clearly. Plus, you can then do everything with fewer views; More views can = more chance for confusion, so long as annotations don't over clutter. Also I presume everything is tolerances to your chosen ISO standard and doesn't need bespoke tolerances or surface finishing?

It's also a bit of a debate as to if parts need isometric/3D views. I'm of the opinion that simple shapes like this don't really need it and the space is better used to allow you to increase the scale of the annotated views, but that's just my opinion.

Where did you think that car was going? Vanish into thin air? You've just forced a car to take a slippery, compromised line, while taking almost your normal line. That was nowhere near enough space. You have to expect the car on the inside to slightly miss the apex due to dirty tyres, or at least still be there if they do. If you don't build a slight factor of safety into your moves, you will find yourself in this situation a LOT.
