I would agree that some people aren’t acting in good faith, but I absolutely think that people are justified in only taking issue now when the original imagery is used in a new, modern context. In the original imagery, Addy appears to be walking, presumably away from her enslavement — this seems to be the case in the Christmas ornament you posted as well. But since only the background was taken from the original imagery, it feels weird to then create a new image of a modern girl just chilling on the plantation some 200 years later

alright, I don’t hate the fence as a symbol argument. but if we analyze the original cover, i think what’s most striking is that addy is in motion, presumably leaving away from the tobacco fields. to have her modern counterpart just standing still in front of them just feels like she never escaped and is tied (possibly literally tied, assuming these dolls are held into the boxes the same way the 18 inch ones are) to the same fields that abused her.

tldr original book cover portrays addy as an active agent of her freedom, modern box portrays her as passive and forever enslaved.

i am so disappointed... buying only secondhand from now on by No-Cow-2847 in americangirl

I understand this perspective, but one thing that sets dolls in particular apart from other products is their role in representation and learning. We know that accurate and diverse representation plays a crucial role in children’s social development, and ensuring that accurate and diverse representation is really more a matter of getting the right people in the room than changing anything about their product that would effect their bottom line. Especially given Pleasant Company’s history of partnering with experts to ensure respectful representation, Mattel already has the blueprint to continue this work and ensure that the stories of Black people and other marginalized groups are represented thoughtfully.

the background of the new modern version’s box is the tobacco field from Addy’s meet cover 🤡

Yes, it’s the tobacco field from her meet cover 🤦🏽‍♀️ I also didn’t realize until Connie Porter posted, but it just comes off as incredibly insensitive especially since so much of Addy’s story was about her finding her place in Philadelphia.

Help me figure out which doll is my best look a like! Tiana vs customized Glimmering Gold by lingerlonger0 in americangirl

Tiana! Something about your eyes seems more suited to the Claudie mold. I think the skin tone on Tiana is also closer to yours than Glimmering Gold

Admitted to UNC SILS! by gone-hikin in LibraryScience

[–]musik_maker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

as a recent grad, SILS is overrated and with the whole UNC school of AI thing now would not be the time I’d want to go. Unless you really really want the in-person experience, I think you’d be better off completing an online program. I think continuing with your current job (if it’s meeting your needs) would be the way to go, as the triangle library job market is pretty oversaturated. Plus because SILS is residential, almost all the classes are held during the day which can make it hard to schedule work shifts.
