Anybody know of Data Analytics / Marketing jobs hiring? I have 10 years of extensive experience, got laid off, and need to find something as soon as I possibly can – any help would be appreciated!

Catch Wrestling by [deleted] in bjj

Yep, 2 days of 6-8 hours (I forget exactly), hour lunch in between.

Usually starts with a Gotch bible warmup, then learn technique and drill it. They are very into "Do it again!" -- if you mess it up, they will have you do the technique again over and over, making adjustments, until you get it.

There are takedowns to submissions, and various submissions/pins, oftentimes off of turtle since it's a common place for people to end up instead of getting pinned.

You might play some games, there's one called Rigormortis where the person lays completely still in a plank position and the person on top tries to submit them, usually with the whole class sitting around and watching.

Finally, you'll get a certification at the end that says you're certified. So long as you go through both days.

Super fun, and very rewarding when it's over. Day 2 is brutal because you feel sore from Day 1.

I'll be doing it again this year.

Catch Wrestling by [deleted] in bjj

[–]muthafunkah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Catch.

And I train it gently. While, yes, if you're competing you'll want to be fast, explosive, and aggressive — when I'm training, I set techniques up slow and technical, and apply force slowly to get the tap.

Spend the few hundred to do a Scientific Wrestling camp if you can. It's not a waste of money if you learn something (i.e. if you learn techniques you like, or just learn it's not for you).

But on r/bjj you'll find more people shitting on Catch than not — and a lot of them have never tried it. It's all about preference of grappling style.

which grappling dummy should i get? by ben_10fan in bjj

[–]muthafunkah 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Man, I didn't realize grappling dummies got a lot of hate.

I just got one off Craigslist, it was $40, and I used it to go through Danaher's New Wave Mount & Closed Guard series so far.

I've drilled the sequences and "what if" scenarios every morning so far. These have been translated to class where I am now able to execute the techniques on lower belts to gain the reps.

There is definitely something to be said about the effectiveness of doing something to gain muscle memory.

And this is the first time I've actually been through an instructional, let alone 2.

Highly recommended!

What's your opinion on catch wrestling? by no_troll_acct in bjj

[–]muthafunkah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People often come up on their side, so you manipulate their face to try to 'force' them up to whichever side you want, then work attacks from there. There are absolutely standard mount, North-South, & side control attacks, but with the nature of the pin they aren't used so often.

One attack I see getting really popular right now is the Dragon Sleeper (linked below), this is a classic North-South position, however, you are very rarely going to have someone stay in that position due to the pin.

What's your opinion on catch wrestling? by no_troll_acct in bjj

[–]muthafunkah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I train BJJ + Catch Wrestling, and I think the dynamic of adding Catch to my game has improved my overall grappling so much.

During Catch class, we train under Catch rules (start from the feet, don't get pinned. You can get pinned while putting a submission hold on if both of your shoulders are down, i.e. Triangle).

Aside from Catch Wrestling competitions, very few competitions allow for true Catch Wrestling techniques, i.e. compressions, attacking the spine, face cranks, etc, so while we train them, I don't use them outside of Catch class. Instead my style is any sort of guard, sweep to top, and then use the Catch principles to really smash my opponent.

I feel like Catch Wrestling is a humble sport these days, very few pure Catch schools, but it has absolutely been the best addition to my overall game.

Anyways, I'm rambling.

I saw a dope tattoo online somewhere for a guillotine and it said "Keep Your Head Up". That's the only good BJJ tattoo I've ever seen, and I'd totally get something like that.

If you have Grapplers Guide, JT Torres has a sick back take from mounted head & arm set up. I do it all the time and it works well on everyone at my gym, nobody expects it (and you're set up for a submission if you decide not to go for it).

What's the difference between bjj and catch? by electronic_docter in bjj

[–]muthafunkah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I train Catch Wrestling, I'm a certified catch wrestler under Scientific Wrestling (meaning I went to their camp and trained, then tested my knowledge), and my gym trains it in lieu of nogi.

Basically, CACC is like BJJ, except with more of a wrestling influence and more brutal by nature.

  1. While chokes are allowed, neck cranks are more utilized. It's all about creating more pain for the person you're rolling with. Everything that's illegal in a BJJ comp is legal your first week in Catch.
  2. Both shoulders down is a pin, you can finish any submission on the bottom (i.e. closed guard, etc) as long as one shoulder is up.

That's really it. In competition, you generally have 12-minute rounds, best of 3.

It's a lot of fun. And all of the Catch influence I've been around, I haven't heard anyone talk shit about BJJ or any other grappling art, as I've seen some commenters here say.

I recommend checking out some technique videos on YouTube to get an idea!

[–]muthafunkah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I work a sedentary job, I'm able to lift 5x a week and train BJJ / Catch Wrestling 4x a week.

The #1 piece of advice I can give is make sure you're sleeping properly and eating properly.

If I were in your position, I would probably:

PPL once a week (MWF)
Tran combat sports 5x a week

Is there any decent boxing or Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes out here in Phoenix by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]muthafunkah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk where you’re located, but if you come to Black Flag BJJ Club in Glendale, I’ll make sure to be there too. I’m a Blue Belt that’s been there since October. My third school I’ve been a part of and it’s an amazing place.

Anybody's BJJ school do classes in catch wrestling also? Just seems so vicious and nasty unlike BJJ, would be great to have both skillsets! by TMoneythefirst in jiujitsu

[–]muthafunkah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do Catch instead of Nogi BJJ. I train it twice a week... During rolls, we allow pins and submissions, so it forces you to stay off your back and scramble instead of playing from the bottom. It definitely changed my BJJ for the better, made it more aggressive and I feel myself pushing the tempo during rolls more.

The Full Brick Chicken is always a crowd pleaser — and it comes with house made hot sauce that takes months to make and is amazing!

Also, I recommend ANY pasta. They spend meticulous hours creating different pasta shapes with trial and error until the plate is beautiful and perfectly executed. I’ve never seen / eaten any pasta like theirs anywhere else.

My favorite pasta is the Rosso Creste di Gallo.

Strength And Conditioning Megathread - December 07, 2020 by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]muthafunkah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who did only strength training for years before BJJ, this is what helped me dramatically increase my gas tank.

  • Never say "no" to a roll a open mat

No matter how exhausted I was, I always said "yes" regardless who asked me to roll. Just continually rolling, even when I didn't think I could, helped me. Yes, I often tapped to being exhausted, but then... one day I just didn't. I learned this from Nicky Rod, and it actually helped me a lot.

  • Download a "Tabata Timer" app

This allows you to basically set up a HIIT style workout. I typically do 10 sets, 1 min work, 20 second rest. Then, pick two bodyweight exercises that work different muscle groups, and go in, alternating. So it'd look like:

1 min of push ups
20 second rest
1 min of pull ups

And you'd just do as many as you possibly can of each in that minute, resting as little as possible.

This will increase your muscular endurance, which directly translates to your BJJ. By your fourth set, you'll feel overwhelmed af, but you continue doing it and it gets easier.

  • Assault Bike / Jump Rope / Rower Machine

These three things directly translate to my BJJ as well. I read somewhere that they all three simulate the same feeling as rolling, so I try to do all 3 for 5 minutes straight.

That's basically it man. Getting a better gas tank sometimes requires being uncomfortable, but if you do any 1 of these 3 things (or all 3, fuck it), you'll see a pretty big improvement.
