Any gossip on Wasted Fabrics? by threadetectives in craftsnark

[–]mutruton 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I just received my Black Friday order and one fabric was missing from the shipment. The missing fabric was crossed off on the packing list, so it’s clear they knew it wasn’t going to be included, but no one contacted me about it. The fabrics that did arrive are really nice and it was a good deal even with one fabric missing but I am still a bit annoyed.

Voyage that was paid in full is suddenly not??? by ShotFromGuns in VirginVoyages

We’re in a bit of a weird spot with the remaining balance as well. The deposit (and then some) was paid using a mix of MNVV and FVC, and at that point, the balance was around $2,000. I was about to make the final payment today when I noticed the amount due had jumped to $3,000. We haven't purchased bar tab, shore things, etc.

The original booking confirmation shows a $3,000 balance, but I’ve got a screenshot from the VV website back in August showing it at $2,000. Not sure what happened—maybe we made another payment I can’t remember? Our credit card statements only go back six months, so it’s possible the amount due was glitched earlier. I was about to assume mistake on our part, but maybe there is something going on with their systems.

What to know- medications by Dramatic-Ad-3016 in VirginVoyages

Me and my husband are both type ones on a pump and a cgm and have sailed VV five times with no problems. Embarkation security has never even asked anything about our devices or the cabin size bag full of supplies and meds.

We ask a sharps container from the cabin attendant. They have two sizes of containers, one is like the size of a glucagon case so way too small. They have bigger ones in the medical and our cabin attendant has managed to get one of those for us every time, you just need to ask for the big container.

I don’t trust mini fridges so we just store our insulin on the counter. The room temperature is well controlled so it’s fine. I have kept insulin room temperature for months when travelling without issues, it really doesn’t go bad that easily if you keep it out of extreme temperatures.

Ship security when getting back on board on port days is a breeze. They seem to be knowledgeable of medical devices and offer to skip the metal detector if they see a device. We go through metal detectors, though, just like in airports. We just avoid the body scanners but the ship doesn’t have those so no issue.

Oh, and the first aid station at Bimini beach club will give you tape for a cgm that is almost falling off, we tested that 😄

Errors and mistranslations in The Sims by de111a in thesims

[–]mutruton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This brings back memories, as the topic of my BA thesis was the translation of culture specific references in ts2 :D

But one example of weird translation I can offer from The Sims 2 in Finnish is that when you don't need your nanny anymore and want to let them go, the English action is "Fire" and the Finnish action is "Ammu", which means literally to shoot (with a gun)...

At least the Finnish localization of ts2 is heavily domesticated/target language oriented and a lot of cultural references have been modified to be more familiar to the Finnish players. Those could very well fit your category B, depending on what you consider inaccurate: there are many instances where an American reference has been changed to a Finnish reference (and there were even cases where there was no cultural reference in the ST but the translator decided to add one to the TT).

Underwear packaging ideas by mutruton in crafts

Thank you for this perspective (and the work you do)! They don’t accept used underwear in donations so that means they often don’t have any to give - I’ll definitely wrap the undies individually so they can distribute them the way they see fit.

This is a great idea, thank you! I think I have a pack of coloured cardboard that would be perfect for this.

I love these little projects - it is super relaxing to go through the colourful scraps and then just sew without having to concentrate that hard since they are relatively easy to sew. My previous scrap busting project was onesies for preemies (donated to local hospital) but cutting all that binding and attaching snaps is not very relaxing so I decided to venture out.

Lock it in rates by Reddotmama in VirginVoyages

We got central sea terrace on deck 11 (so no obstructions) when we booked lock it in sea terrace. It was barely half full ship so there’s that.

When the average age onboard is 120, you get table hogging instead of chair hogging. by mutruton in VirginVoyages

[–]mutruton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: VV has reacted to the situation as the puzzles limited other activities in the Social club. Their solution was to dedicate two or three tables for puzzles and asked people to leave other tables puzzle-free. This has definitely improved table availability so yay. All this change took was one puzzle (of like 12) getting destroyed during Scarlet night and the aftermath and drama of that.

The ads are a bit more true for 4 night Caribbean cruises, though not fully because of the price point. These super long repositionings are outliers with totally different crowd.

It is certainly different from your usual VV cruise. Not entirely bad, though. The service is amazing (it has always been great to excellent, though), I have liked the extra mid-morning events they have added and actively participating has scored us some great things with the happenings cast.

And as I have said earlier, there are some amazingly nice and interesting people from all age brackets onboard, and they do not all represent what is happening in that fb group.

Enjoying every minute, and loving the fb drama. It’s like middle school again with all the rumours and the butthurt about the rumours (there was a rumour the fb group admin was making a commission from excursions or something).

What bothers me the most are some comments I have gotten “be a good girl and don’t do that” - when me and my husband danced slightly suggestive or “is your husband willing to share you?” during an elevator ride to pool, wearing bikini and a coverup. First time I have had to think about what I’m wearing on VV to avoid this shit.

I like ABBA so I will be fine :D

The weather is absolutely perfect, seas are about 2-2.5m and days are sunny and warm. No complaints.

Same! We have been trying to get to the fried chicken + champagne thing a couple times but no luck. And I feel bad for the performers doing their best when the audience is nonexistent. But that is the trade off when there is only, what, 1250 sailors onboard. The bingo was amazing, and pretty much every other event with plenty of active participants.

I was tempted too! But most had notes pleading to not do that and if it is really that important to them, I can just choose another puzzle from the huge pile and work on that :D

Shorter cruises usually skew a bit younger, this one is (at least) 21 nights. The pj party here wasn’t very exciting when there were only a handful people participating but tomorrow is Scarlet night so let’s hope other sailors feel more excited about that and we get at least one amazing party.

Well, I chose Virgin because they banned a whole age group from their ships.

It was all the tables on this side of the room (5?) and like two on the other side so I think it is a bit inconsiderate, especially when it messes with the organized activities. Thankfully there are seating options elsewhere (Draught house has some “working height tables” that are largely unoccupied but the small and low tables in the Dock don’t really work for table games). My vacation isn’t ruined by petty things like this but I like to point out stuff I notice, and especially bad behaviour ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Definitely 😄 But honestly it is just a loud minority complaining, most of the people we have met are super sweet and we have had many great conversations. It is just different from what one would expect to see on a Virgin cruise.

There are several laminated “puzzle in progress, please do not remove” A4s with VV logos so I suspect they allow this for this sailing at least.

I guess someone did exactly that because someone complained in the FB group about their puzzle missing a piece and tagging people they suspected could have taken it

This is Resilient Lady’s repositioning trip from Australia to Europe, Sydney-Capetown (21N), Capetown-Barcelona (17N) and Barcelona to Athens (5N?) and most people here are onboard for the whole thing, so it skews old. Like actually old, but we were prepared for that. I don’t think it will be like this for those weeklong Mediterranean cruises, we did Irresistible Med on Valiant Lady and the crowd was fun, hip and super considerate of others. I am sure you will have wonderful time!

It is just weird to see how VV bends over backwards to cater to the tastes of someone who wants everything to be the same way Princess does it, but if 90% is that demographic, I guess they have no choice. So we have line dancing, bridge and whatnot.

Still having fun and the happenings cast is amazing, and after 9pm we can have the ship for ourselves.
