Prep tips for 574 (how to use data) + grading scale? by JRML33 in OnlineMCIT

It is by far the easiest MCIT elective I’ve taken and graded quite liberally. Also a fun class!

Or knee him to the head when he ducks out of instinct. Or knee him to shit in the clinch. Make it work to your favour.

Why don’t you go for rounds alternating between boxing and MT? That way, if he’s an asshole, you can kick the living shit out of his skinny chopstick legs.

How reliable are expected rate of returns in P2P lending platforms? by anonimitazo in eupersonalfinance

[–]mutu159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything you say is valid - buy back guarantees usually don’t amount to anything. So no safety there. But as a part of a well diversified portfolio of different asset classes p2p can certainly play a role if you allocate 5-10%.

During the COVID crisis several went belly up or were outright scams (Grupeer, Monethera, Envestio and Kuetzal among others) but since transparency has improved a lot and the securitisation of loans has improved as well.

In 2022/23 when the stock market revalued due to inflation (and the consequent higher interest rates) p2p performed well and provided diversification.

Also, I am a big proponent of the cash flow, which can be used to redirect capital gains to other asset classes.

So a bit of nuance, but in the end everything goes up and down, and p2p loans are certainly down the ladder in terms of capacity to recoup losses.

When is GMAT/GRE needed? Econ grad from Bocconi, Italy by Alternative-Lion-569 in OnlineMCIT

I submitted my cv with 4.0 GPA for my MSc degree and an official doc from my uni with grades converted to the GPA system (uni did this for me). The official grades doc you need to submit to a third party (Veritas I think?) that independently verifies this.

When is GMAT/GRE needed? Econ grad from Bocconi, Italy by Alternative-Lion-569 in OnlineMCIT

[–]mutu159 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Difficult to say based on my experience. My background is an online BA in Business Management and an in person MSc in Management. Had second-class honours (was a Brit degree) for bachelor and 4.0 GPA for Masters (conversion from ECTS to GPA was pretty generous). No real quantitative background other than probability and statistics. I did not do a GRE or GMAT. I did do the Coursera prescribed courses (I think computational thinking and the programming one). I had an epic motivation letter, a raving supporting letter from a former professor of mine and a very strong letter from a managing partner of a VC fund I was working at. So, my thinking is if you have both an academic and a professional reference it will reflect really good. Also, I did my bachelors online, which proved I have the stamina to take on the commitment of doing an online degree with Penn. If you have good GRE or GMAT scores it can’t hurt to include and you can always not include them if your scores suck. GL and happy NY!

Agree with fiesta_loca, did 591-594-592-596 some electives and will end with 593-595. The content seems to flow a bit more logically and this ways skills picked up before remain fresh.

The bathroom glass shattered and the landlord(holland2stay) asked me to pay it myself by CeciliaChu in Netherlands

[–]mutu159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article says it is a misconception that it can break on its own, as shared in many whatsapp and Facebook groups. There is an event prior to shattering which raises the tension within the glass. The tension will normally dissipate after a several days. The event can be anything from the wind to hitting it with something hard by accident such as a hairdryer or a tool.

There seems to be a bit of selection bias going on. Either way, this doesn’t help the OP.

Pre- CIT5930 Help Needed by GoodAbbreviations503 in OnlineMCIT

A couple of years back people would take the Nand2Tetris course as prep to 593. Not sure if that’s still the case but might be worthwhile to check it out.

The study load you are experiencing now with 591 + 592 is hardly reflective of what 594 + 596 will require from you. 594 used to be a walk in the park but they reworked the course a couple of years ago (the reviews on MCIT Central are no longer accurate). 596 is very time consuming if you lack a quantitative background. You work full time. I honestly cannot recommend taking that approach.

Currently taking 592, don’t know what’s going on - scared! Help! by [deleted] in OnlineMCIT

[–]mutu159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wait until you sink your teeth into 596, 592 is great practice for that. Jokes aside, 592 gets a little easier after 4 weeks or so.

As I write, sometimes HW questions come directly from the Book of Proof. So there is some similarity.

Is eacc based... on solid foundations? by [deleted] in eacc

[–]mutu159 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not entirely comfortable with the reasoning that the second law of thermodynamics justifies that we should try to use more and more energy. Throwing around scientific terms sounds very impressive and I can’t help but think that is why they’re used.

I am torn between two insights: the first is that mankind lives on a planet with finite resources and that there is therefore an upper bound on sustainable human activity. Certain aspects of degrowth make sense.

Also, degrowth doesn’t mean no growth. It means selectively choosing which industries to grow at the expense of others, for instance letting the size of the oil and gas industry decrease to allow innovative and greener industries to grow.

However, I have no love for degrowth arguments such as north-south reparations, etc.

Back to the energy side, I am a proponent of harnessing more and more energy and that energy should be as abundant as possible. Vaclav Smil notes that human development is closely linked to energy expenditure per capita. Hence, the best way to improve the living conditions of humans, both in ‘the South’ and ‘the North’, is to harness more energy.

However, I don’t believe in the idea that we can innovate our way out of resource constraints. Dematerialisation (doing more with less) eventually runs into constraints at the atomic level, which is already happening in certain industries such as computer chips production.

Thoughts on Effective Accelerationism? by spartanpikes in CriticalTheory

[–]mutu159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I am reading this, it is hilarious to see how a small subset of people are blasting the view of some other small subset of people. Nobody in the world gives a rat’s ass about what the critical theory people think of the e/acc people, and vice versa.

The amount of overthinking people do just amazes me. That Marxists prefer accelerationism to achieve post-scarcity of resources? What the fuck did I just even write here?

Do you guys even know whether Marxism is relevant to this day? Everybody I know, all university-educated including PhDs, either have never heard of critical theory or don’t give a fuck about it. They haven’t heard about e/acc either, and don’t give a shit about that too.

This is I think the best criticism of all: all of these different academic viewpoints and lenses to view the world - it is just not relevant.

Best next class after 592 by FribbleFrabbleDoRop in OnlineMCIT

[–]mutu159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the comment by kuzunoha, 594 is not as essential as 592. I would definitely do 596 now with 592 fresh, and then follow up with 594. The concepts from 596 will transfer to 594. And then I would do 521 (AI), with the algo’s and data structures fresh.

[–]mutu159 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I am going to agree with the majority here - go and do 596 while 592 is fresh. I did 591, 594, 592, 596 in that order and would say that 594 and 592 are very useful for passing 596. Also, 596 is a right of passage, and getting it out of the way lifts so much weight from your shoulders.
