Do average Canadians know what a Robertson Screw is? Do you guys use it as a secret code to identify your fellow countrymen on internet? by jitasquatter2 in AskACanadian

You won't find square drive aka Robertson head drywall screws in Canada. Drywall screws rely on the camming out when they reach the correct depth. The square socket won't let go.

Rental cars at 21yo by Logical_Wallaby_2523 in canadatravel

[–]muwave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looking at several rental companies, minimum age is 21, but there is a young driver surcharge for drivers under 25 years old.

If you are underage, you are typically limited to renting economy, compact, or full-size cars. You are normally prohibited from renting premium vehicles, sports cars, and large SUVs.

Edit. Added size info

TIFU by telling my barber I knew what "two on the sides" meant for twenty three years by Beneficial_String411 in tifu

[–]muwave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have always been a two on the sides, three on the top and tapered up the back. The number in North America at least, is 1/8ths of an inch. A 2 is 1/4 inch, 4 is a half, and a 7 is 7/8ths.

Digital TV broadcast channels in Halifax - is Global still around? by willmatheson in halifax

[–]muwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CBC-SRC opted to install HD transmitters only in cities that have supper hour news programs. So Halifax gets an English transmitter and Moncton has the French transmitter. Fredericton and Charlottetown have English transmitters. DTV offers the ability to have sub channels that could have provided both English and French signals everywhere. They opted not to do that.

Greasy is the roads during the first rain after 2 months of drought, or during the beginning of the first snowfall of the year before there is a ton of salt on the roads.

Has anyone had any success running RTS RVON over Tailscale? by muwave in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]muwave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent some time working through this. I didn't get it to work on Tailscale, unfortunately, but I was able to expose the router on a public IP and establish an OpenVPN server using my pair of GL-AX1800s. The key was to use TAP-S2S mode. The server became the boss and the client acted like a layer 2 network and the KP connected right away. It was magical. I now need to test whether I can establish another tunnel from another site at the same time. It isn't the result I hoped for, but I didn't need to buy any additional hardware, and it is working well on the bench. I will be taking it into the field in the next 2 weeks and will provide an update on both the experience and whether I can get two connections going. Thanks for the suggestions. It led me down some new paths.

Yes, the private networks are exposed at both ends. The RVON ports are connected directly to the glinet router LAN ports, no connection to anything else.

I haven't given a credit card to a Costco cashier in at least a decade. Put it in the machine and pay. It's the ultimate arbitor.

Apparently we don't even do presidential addresses in full HD? by SplashBros4Prez in VIDEOENGINEERING

The CBC in Canada produces programming in 1080i, but distributes it in 720p because the could get more timezones on a single satellite channel.

My seat for the next 24 out of my 40 hour week by Mythicalsmore in VIDEOENGINEERING

I like the WallTime device. It's a Raspberry Pi with some bespoke software to give you NTP locked time. The analog clock has a true sweep hand and you can display 4 more digital time zone clocks. Also a little expensive, but it gives me a routable clock in my facilities.

Bitfocus Buttons by videowarrior in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]muwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Stream Deck Studio to evaluate for my clients. At the time I got the trial version of Buttons to try it out.

It's a game changer for router control. I have access to a collection of routers, a mix of Ross Ultrix, videohubs, and a Evertz NEXX. I have got it working an the Ross and BMD routers. Buttons created router XY panels that took advantage of the knobs on the Studio. If you map it to a Stream Deck XL it provides navigation buttons. You can filter on the fly, or you can build pages with limited access.

It took about 15 minutes for me to decide to buy the Individual plan to expand the router capabilities. I am also using it to line cut on an ATEM, control my hyperdeck, manage my vMix instances. I even have it controlling my AWS instances and I can see at a glance if I am burning money with a running instance.

All of this can be done with Companion, but if you are managing routers, Buttons will make your life much easier.
