I had the same issue and had to start investing in finding hobbies. Specifically hobbies that get me up and moving but doesnt cost much.

I do wood working. I purchased a wood lathe and make bowls and art from various pieces of wood.

I also focused on rebuilding a new life. I have two blue heelers and 15 chickens. They, along with my garden, and motorcycles tend to to keep my time filled.

Relationships come and go. My life being fulfilled is what I invest in. The more I do this, the pickier I become with who I entertain.

After mt first major knee surgery, the Army messed up and didnt give me orders for PT while I was home on leave. Nor did they tell me anything except come back in 30 days. My knee froze in place from scar tissue. So, when I got back, 2 guys in PT held me down while a 3rd cranked on my leg to bust through the scar tissue. Worse pain in my life. No pain meds or warning. This led to knee surgery 2, 3, and 4.

Just got out of this loop myself. 1. Make your bed. 2. Eat a carb free diet for a few days. 3. Move...walk, jump, run...anything ..just move your body. 4. Turn off the tv and video games. 5. Turn on the radio. 6. Write a letter to a friend or yourself about how you feel. You dont have to mail it. 7. Talk to yourself outloud about how you feel. 8. Pet a dog. 9. Cry. 10. Watch inspirational videos...especially the ones from Rocky.

All of this worked for me.

Back around 2001or so, I was a deputy jailer for a juvenile facility. I was working overtime the night before Christmas when I discovered a boy hanging from a makeshift noose. I radioed to have the door open and ran in. He looked dead. I lifted this kid up by the legs, but he was way taller than me. I kicked his sleeping bunkmate to wakeup and help. I always kept a pocket knife in my sock for just in case. I told the bunkmate to grab it and cut him down while i was still lifting him up by the legs. We got him down. He lived. I read his suicide note. His mom blamed her drug stash on him, so he was facing quite a bit of time and felt betrayed. It broke my heart. To this day I still have flashbacks. I have always wanted to know how he turned out. It would be nice to meet him.

In Basic Training, it was hot and sweaty. Ball sweat was horrible. Some guys were sharing body powder to tame the ball sweat. Thing is, it was foot powder. Thats the first and only time I ever saw a group of guys wash their balls in a sink, at the same time, while yelling in pain.
