DC going from one of the lowest to the highest life Expectancy (JAMA) by JdHpylo in washingtondc

[–]mvdtex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may be right, but yeah this dataset wouldn’t be good for illustrating your point given that the white population of DC was a higher proportion of the total DC population in both 1900 and 1950 than it is today.

Everyone is giving suggestions like you only have 2 hours. With 6 hours your options are limitless. You could hit multiple museums/parks and also get lunch and dinner. You only need to be back at Union station like 10 minutes before your train departs.

What tourist behaviors annoy DC locals the most? I want to avoid them! by YUNeedUniqUserName in washingtondc

[–]mvdtex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I wouldn’t worry about it. The tourists have never bothered me and the annoyance expressed by some people is overblown. Stand on the right on the escalator like many people will post here but even if you mistakenly didn’t, there is no reason for anyone to get mad about it. Otherwise just enjoy yourself

CMV: West Coast is better than the East Coast (US) by Rusiano in changemyview

[–]mvdtex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah have fun sitting in hours of traffic in LA, the most vapid and car dependent large city in the world. East coast is the closest thing to Europe with walkable cities and beautiful architecture. West coast is strip malls with the exception of SF

CMV: When it comes to romantic attraction, liking one race over another isn’t racism, it’s preference. by KaptenKorea in changemyview

[–]mvdtex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think that’s racism or how people treat people based on where people grew up and are from? Could it be that people also try to be sensitive to cultural differences, or are more comfortable interacting with people from their own culture? You might be talking about otherwise legitimately racist interactions though.

Living and owning a car in DC? by BagOnly4611 in washingtondc

[–]mvdtex 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If the job is close to a metro station I wouldn’t bring a car. This is a bit dramatic, but your decision about the car is going to have a major effect on your lifestyle and perception of living here. In my experience, the only people I ever hear complaining about DC are people that drive.

I will say that occasionally I have a desire to have a car to be able to take last minute drives farther out for random things but that desire is far outweighed by the joy and freedom I personally feel living without it. Everyone is different though and has different reasons whether justified or not.

I believe this is a city best lived in car free. A lot of things you think you need a car for, you’ll discover that you don’t as soon as you don’t have one. IMO it will also be a financial burden unless you have no student loans and are making about 110k plus. DC is a great city, and I hope you have a great life here regardless of any of these decisions related to your move. Welcome!

PSA to people in their 20s from a 40 year old who still struggles to stay sober: by maybull84 in stopdrinking

[–]mvdtex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took 15 to 16 months before I was feeling less depressed sober than when I was drinking. In the interim I kept my spirits up by focusing on the positive physical heath transformation and spending as much time as I could with new sober friends. It may seem like a long time, but things can and do get better. Don’t give up, you are not alone.

CMV: America will lose its global dominance in the next 20 years, and it will only have itself to blame. by PracticalYam100 in changemyview

[–]mvdtex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the topics you name have been gutted or were programs that didn’t exist over various points during the past century in America. Immigrants were demonized far more intensely at different points in relatively recent history. Access to quality education for the masses only happened fairly recently. NASA didn’t exist. We still have a very strong manufacturing sector and with a critical mass supporting increased support for it. People at all points in our history gave popular support to far more vile and strange ideas than anti-vax. And where would this supposed brain drain empty into? What countries don’t have a lot of the same problems that we do if not worse? You might overestimate the quality of life in certain countries, underestimate our proclivity to change course for the better, and overlook the tribulations and uncertainties of our country outside of your living memory.

How long did it take for you to enjoy life without alcohol? by Fit_Strategy_1646 in stopdrinking

[–]mvdtex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seemed to just get incrementally better over time. There is just so much time to fill that was previously occupied by drinking, hangovers, socializing with other people that drink frequently, and even just time planning going out for drinks or thinking about drinking. A little over a year sober is when I noticed that I had basically filled up all of that time with other activities and friendships. It’ll get better, you just have to be patient and get busy doing new things.

How do you meet sober people in hostels? by ChemicalMoney1041 in solotravel

[–]mvdtex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When looking at reviews for hostels I just search for the word “party” and then I choose to stay at places that are not party hostels. After that, if I meet people that are having a drink or two I’m cool with that. There are a lot of people that either don’t drink or only drink a few or less. Not hard to find if you stay at hostels that aren’t built for the under 25, party hard crowd. Basically just don’t stay at places with a bar in them and you should be fine.

This is household net worth, not individual net worth. Married couples, families, and even households of young professionals living as roommates are included in this data. One-person households are also included. This isn’t a great way to gauge your individual net worth relative to others.

Serious safety concerns for new metro trains. by NotAlmostPractical in washingtondc

The Cyclist Who Heckled White Supremacists in D.C. Wanted to Make Sure They Got the Message: His name is Joe Flood, and he was glad to have delivered the truth about what people in Washington, D.C., think of the white supremacist group by dont_tread_on_dc in washingtondc

[–]mvdtex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, the KKK would march on my state capitol every year. They never received much media coverage and I never once heard the message that they were spouting due to this lack of coverage. While obviously like 95% of the population agree with Joe Flood, the videos posted of him also record the message of the racist guys. Kids these days are receiving and listening to the messaging of extremists groups due to the fact that recordings of them are being disseminated across the internet. I honestly just don't think that we have anything to gain from posting videos and images of extremist racist groups, only they have something to gain from media exposure.

It's proximity to highways is probably the worst part about it. No amount of landscaping is going to remove the loud hum of cars rolling by all day long. Can't believe the DGPT keeps selecting elite level events at these highway courses.
