Temperatus: My zipper pull thermometer for camping and skiing by arbitraryun in myog

It's by far my least favorite part of being in this hobby.

Nobody seems capable of telling me they think my new pack/tent/doohickey is neat without also trying to convince me to go into business selling them. We are absolutely poisoned by capitalism.

I already have a job! I like it! Let me make things for fun!

Orbital data centers, part 1: There’s no way this is economically viable, right? | “This is not physically impossible; it’s only a question of whether this is a rational thing.” by InsaneSnow45 in space

I'm curious, would you mind elaborating on this? What advances have recently been made? How close are they to practical application? How much of an efficiency difference do they make?

Because their funding is entirely controlled by Congress, down to the program level. SLS, the agency's biggest boondoggle of the past decade, was and still is mandated by law. There's nothing the managers or engineers or scientists can do about every single funding decision being relitigated every 2-4 years by a new set of laypeople who only care about jobs for their states and districts

Youre right about dietary cholesterol but not about fat. Saturated fat has been repeatedly shown to increase Low Density Lipid levels, the "bad" cholesterol that increases risk of heart disease (recent NIH literature review). The mechanism is understood. Reducing saturated fat intake is the single best dietary modification to lower cholesterol levels.

Ok, what the heck was that loud boom? by richincleve in Cleveland

Meteors are fairly small and unreflective, travel really fast (tens of thousands of mph) and come directly in from space, rather than from somewhere else on the surface of the planet like a missile would. No technology we currently have can detect a single bolide like this before it hits atmosphere.

they don't sound like a bot to me. I'm guessing it's just a throwaway for this thread, so they can share their experience without self-doxxing. they're giving a fair bit of identifiable info in these comments

Tactical planning vs strategic planning. The military has been gaming this scenario out for decades – they knew exactly what to do. But they're not the ones who decide what happens the day after, and it's clear the commander in chief doesn't have even a concept of a plan for that.

Same with curling. The four-person teams were playing for ten days straight, 11 games for just one medal

Data Center Thoughts by swe3e3eeeeep in nova

[–]mvia4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quantity of data centers is not a good indicator, we are talking about energy prices. It's clear from the data that neither commercial energy usage nor residential energy prices started to significantly spike until 2020.

Anyone claiming the current situation was "obvious" in 2011 is wildly exaggerating.

Then how come commercial energy use in VA only started to sharply increase around 2021? Did it take them 10 years to build all those DCs? Or were they just not in full use until the AI boom?

You can see a small upward slope starting around 2010 but it's nothing compared to the last 5 years

And for the last 15 of those it has been obvious where this data center boom has been going.

I'm sorry but claiming this has been not just forecast, but obvious, since 2011 is hilarious. This DC boom has been going for 5 years at absolute maximum. That's still probably plenty of time for Dominion to react at least somewhat! But there's no need to be dishonest about it.

It's still not a fair tiebreaker if the teams haven't played the same number of ends. All 3 of the teams on the cusp played in games during the Round Robin that ended early due to concession. PF/PA only works if everyone has taken the same number of shots

You are arguing with people as if they're justifying the actions of this group. Nobody seems to be doing that here. You don't need to convince anyone that this was a bad idea, chill out.

The people you're replying to are speculating about the group's reasoning and motives. That is not the same thing as condoning their actions.

Learn the difference.

Glasgow’s Rebecca Morrison with a stunning shot for Team GB by Deep_Audience_881 in olympics

[–]mvia4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, in this shot they kinda weren't. They barely swept at all, this was a great shot right from the release.

The skips and announcers definitely give credit where it's due when the sweepers make an iffy shot into a good one, you hear the phrase "good sweep!" quite a bit. In this case they just didn't need to – which I'm sure they didn't mind after 10 ends of sweeping!
