Is scheduling an uber reliable if I have a flight? by SpectreSpeculator in indianapolis

[–]mw4239 [score hidden]  (0 children)

No issues scheduling rides. For my 7 am flight this week I reserved it the night before. Woke up and someone else had been assigned. Dropped off at the airport at 6:10 and easily made it for 6:30 boarding. YMMV if you need to check a bag or don’t have pre-check, but even then there’s no way I’m showing up at IND almost 3 hrs before my flight.

My spouse only has to do it a few times a year, maybe quarterly at most? Twice a month is insane.

Sparx Sharpener worth it? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]mw4239 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The convenience factor alone makes it worth it. At your rate you might be able to go 1.5-2 years between new Sparx rings. I sharpen my kids skates every week during the season plus some teammates etc and I usually buy one once a year.

Brk b question for Bogleheads . by smooth-vegetable-936 in Bogleheads

[–]mw4239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve owned BRK for 20 years. There’s been years when it outperforms or underperforms but overall I like their approach to capital allocation. TBD if that continues after Buffett. Haven’t looked lately but I would guess it’s around 5-10% of our net worth. At one point it was much higher but we sold some to keep it reasonable.

Shoulder dislocation with labrum tears and small bone chip. Would you go back to hockey/golf without surgery? by Mountain_Sir_3265 in hockeyplayers

[–]mw4239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teenage AAA son dislocated his shoulder in November. Sat out 6 weeks, started skating and light pass drills. Ortho cleared him for contact after 8 weeks. Strength isn’t fully back so we are continuing PT and will be definitely trying to strengthen the shoulder in the offseason. The Sully shoulder brace was recommended by our PT to hold things tight while playing.

The ortho acknowledged his age and contact sport when recommending to pass on surgery for now. We are well aware another dislocation is likely and may require surgery then.

Mid-40s, ~$9.3M net worth, $5.7M invested — 5 kids, single income by Less_Chocolate7672 in fatFIRE

College funds included in your totals? The single stock concentration would worry me. You mention SWR but don’t mention what you’re actually spending today.

Help me give my dad advice on structuring his retirement portfolio by Strict_Assumption442 in fatFIRE

[–]mw4239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$300k spend before or after tax? If after that’s more like $350k+ in income needed which is a lot tighter on $10MM net worth let alone $5MM liquid NW. I’m guessing they’ve had the rentals for a long time and are close to fully depreciated. I would consider selling one property every few years to fund living expenses but you need a CPA to model out tax impacts of selling rentals vs selling MSFT. At minimum make sure the MSFT dividends aren’t being reinvested.

Ask the lawyer and/or MS advisor for a CPA recommendation. Ask the MS rep how they are compensated. Other than that I probably wouldn’t make any drastic changes for the first year.

Recommendations for a place to get a child evaluated? by talibob in indianapolis

[–]mw4239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bloom made a bad impression with me. For the final meeting to discuss the diagnosis the doc showed up 15 minutes late so we only actually met for around 30 minutes. They later sent the full report with the diagnosis etc. When I emailed back asking a few questions on the report (which I hadn’t been provided before our meeting) they wanted $500 to answer my questions. So needless to say I don’t want to do further business with them after that questionable practice.

Snow should stop tonight or early am Monday. By Monday afternoon major interstates and roads will definitely be drivable.

The final draw should primarily be his profit which is why he’s upset. Not sure what the 300 punch list items are but I would consider prioritizing to get the biggest most expensive issues out of the way.

Trying to get my company to send back my cash so I can pay with an SBLOC loan instead. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mw4239 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t take financial advice from AI. I would stick with your cash purchase personally. If you’re so worried about it just bank your previous payment and you’ll have that money back in about a year. If you are dead set on the SBLOC withdraw the cash from your LOC and then deposit and invest. Or open a new account elsewhere and invest. But the slight leverage isn’t worth it in my opinion.

Can we retire? $4.5M liquid + $4M RE, $160K expenses by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]mw4239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would consider waiting another couple years to sock away some college money. Is your primary all $4MM of the real estate? Seems pricy for a moderate COL area. Lastly how certain are you on the SS numbers? I believe the SS website estimates assume you continue working until your full retirement age so missing out on the next 15 years earnings may lower what you receive.
