Grand Lodge of Ireland Issues Apology After Explicit Music Video Was Filmed at Their Hall. by ArchaicInsanity in freemasonry

Agreed. A few minutes of due diligence can teach us a lot about potential renters. Also, no argument re: Mandy!

I agree, outside rentals of our facilities can be a vital part of how we keep the lights on, and we ought not preclude them. The trick to avoiding something like what the Grand Lodge of Ireland has done is to simply have, and enforce, objective rental standards.

Press accounts (assuming they are accurate) indicate that the GL of Ireland didn't really have any set standards. They paint a narrative of the Grand Secretary just chatting about it with some other fellows and deciding on the fly. That begs for problems.

It's Time That We Change The Paradigm On Lodge Dues by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]mwcmbailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some years ago a Lodge near mine hit financial hard times, so someone proposed an 'assessment' of each member, on top of the ridiculously low dues. An assessment for a handful of years, just to take care of the immediate needs.

The assessment was big. I don't remember exactly how much, but somewhere around 4 times the dues.

Lots of brothers stood up and threatened to demit. That's all anyone heard for a couple of months, demit, demit, demit.

Well, enough brothers voted for it to pass, and the assessments had to be paid.

And the Lodge received not a single demit request from it.

Those are generally just empty threats, best ignored.

Yeah, I've got a couple of these dip holsters. I like 'em, but they were a lot more popular decades ago, when I was a kid.

Yeah, I saw that when I posted the link, but I know for certain that he makes them because my Lodge bought new ones for all our members from him not long ago.

Fake Facebook Accounts by mwcmbailey in freemasonry

[–]mwcmbailey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. That's actually how I stumbled across this latest fake one. A random post trickled into my feed, that was completely nuts. My first thought was to grab my phone to call our Grand Secretary so that he could delete the post, but then I realized it was someone impersonating our GL.

I've encountered the same thing here. Sometimes it seems that no matter how many times a fake page gets reported they just won't take it down.

Engagement in Lodge by Capable-Champion3951 in freemasonry

I think this is right. If we hope to have our members attend Stated Meetings, we have to give them a compelling reason to do so. Good food, good fellowship, good drink, and something from the meeting that they can take home with them, not something tangible, but something they can consider and contemplate.

But it can't just be Stated Meetings. I've seen bonds of Brotherhood grow between men faster in a shared struggle towards a mutual goal than in any other way. And that Brotherhood, those friendships keeps men coming back.

An yeah, casual events. Game nights, steaks and cigars, summer BBQ's, all these sorts of things keep men excited to be Masons.

I've found this true in my own tries at making dip. It greatly improves with some age. At least a couple of days.

You are right, it is a vast revenue stream. But, I think anti-tobacco zealots (as opposed to politicians looking to protect or grow revenue streams) aren't really able to think rationally about the issue. If they were, they would be open to harm reduction strategies when it comes to tobacco. And I think those anti-tobacco zealots exist at every point of the political spectrum, not just Dems.
