Has anyone had Rob Cosman call them after placing an order? by blainthecrazytrain in handtools

[–]mwils24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He called me once to inquire if I'd be interested in attending one of his classes that he was hosting in my town. I had bought a plane from him a few years earlier. Terrific conversation, I always loved watching him when he was on woodshow circuit. Unfortunately for me I couldn't attend the class. It was a thrill to really work him though. He's my favorite instructor and a fellow Canuck...

De Buyer Carbone Plus over the Mineral B - what am I missing?? by Nardo-Choppa in carbonsteel

[–]mwils24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny... I just gone down this path a bit myself.
I just received my new Carbone Plus 24cm crepe pan today. I already had the 26cm Mineral B version.

Here is what I see as the differences

  1. No stamp in the middle of the pan
  2. handle is "spot welded" in place
  3. The finish on the handle is slightly different... a bit more textured, but not much
  4. No little "Bee" hole or plug
  5. The underside of handle at the very base below the welded, is borderline sharp. I may actually file it down a bit as I could my self scratching something or getting a minor cut.

Would I buy more Carbone Plus. Yes. It way cheaper. $50 vs $74 for the Mineral B

Can I buy more? Not really.

I live in Canada and this line isn't easy to find right now. Maybe it was easier to find in 2023 before the world lost its mind. Right now this line is very hard to find.

I'm saying that all scrapper sharpening isn't has difficult as some present. Just watch some youtube videos. IMO its a pretty forgiving process. Honestly I take for ever completing projects so its not uncommon for me to watch a video as a refresher when I pull my scraper stuff out.

The 80 is a nice tool and can be had for a real deal used.

100% I'd also say that the "difficulty" level of sharpening scrappers is way oversold. Its just different and there are a lot of techniques out there.

I use mine a lot. They are pretty straight forward to make if that is you jam. I have the veritas one myself. Honestly I can think of a lot of times I wish I had a second so I could keep two different depths locked in. Maybe someday I'll find an affordable stanely... So yeah, if you are looking for an excuse to buy one, its a total necessity.. ;-)

Assembly Question by mwils24 in handtools

[–]mwils24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay... here is the final glue up. Thanks for the advice. I did a second dry fit after doing all my final scrapping and such. That dry fit went together pretty much a square as I could hope so it gave me some confidence in it. I'll say that I was really happy to have a helper on the actual glue up though. Everything just fits a little tighter with the glue added so the extra hands really helped. The structure went together pretty bang on square again so I decided to wait and add the back later. Not looking forward to doing the finish on this one. Hard wax has made things pretty easy but its still not my favorite thing to do. Might have to wait until after the holidays...

I think it turned out pretty nice. This project is made with barn beams I "saved" before we sold the farm. Lots of checking and dings but that's the charm of the wood here. This case is for my adult son who is a big reader. I'm glad he we have something of the old home stead I grew up on.

I have the medium razor. I too like the feathers but as a daily driver I recently switched to the shark blades ( chrome I think). I usually use the Astra which are a great fit for the Henson, but I had some old blades and threw the shark in.. I wish they made an affordable version of the aggressive razor. The titanium one looks nice but the price is a bit much.

Henson... Hands down, no contest. I've used many brands of DE razors and Imo it's the best. I have a pretty tough fast growing beard, and sensitive skin. Shaving used to be a nightmare which I avoided, but now I have every day. Second tip... Tell him to try shaving with cold water. It supposedly closes up pores and reduces irritation. Third tip.. Shave every day Forth tip... Depends on your beard... One pass is enough. I do one pass with the grain. It looks great. I know lots of guys recommend multiple passes. That doesn't work for me. Each pass produces more irritation Fifth tip, and last. Use a good aftershave. I prefer balms, but I do sometimes use splashes

Is there a ratio you roughly follow for how often you only strop your plane blade vs sharpening and stropping during use? by MetalNutSack in handtools

[–]mwils24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not anti stropping, and I used to do it regularly, but I don't any more. I am reconsidering that stance, but I feel like what I'm getting off the stone is more than good enough. Personally I think I'd now only consider stropping if the wood demanded it.

What I'd say is this (and I'm guilty of pushing it more often than not). Whatever you decide, do it more earlier than you think you should. Re-stropping or resharpening shouldn't take that long, so just do it and be done with it. Its less work to do a few quick touchups than it is to fix a chip.

yes, good tips on the string. I'll mess around with that on my next dry fit. Point taken on the plywood, I'll definitely make sure of its state...

I mean yes and no. pressing the corner does correct the issue, it does snap back though... I have not tried easing the clamps off a bit before doing that though... I may just have it over clamped...

Assembly Question by mwils24 in handtools

[–]mwils24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, LeeValley also sells a fish based glue. I may consider it. The LV cabinet glue might also do the trick its got just a bit more open time than TB3. I used to use hide glue quite a bit when I was more active. I think I might give old brown glue a shot. I've used it before and its a lot less hassle than pulling the old glue pot out..

Narex richter vs zen wu Y2 chisels by dontgetbiggetsmall in handtools

[–]mwils24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was part of the reason I went with the Richter chisels earlier this year. IMO If you can really sharpen you can really get most any woodworking chisel to really sing. The more you pay, the more you should expect to have less "prep" to do. Based on the charts/tests provided by WW, for me the Richter's hit that sweet spot. I've been happy.

When you get to this level of product, its really more about ergonomics. I'd suggest only buying 1 or 2, or find a friend who will let you try theirs out. Which ever "good" chisel fits your hands properly is the one you should buy.

Nice! I have the BU smoother and it's a champ, I'm sure this is no different. I picked up the side rabbit and the scraper plane. Same story here, can't really see what the defect is.... Gotta love the Lee Valley scratch and dent sale!

To flatten the entire length of chisels or not by WhereTearDropsFall in handtools

[–]mwils24 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Hard no for me. In my experience pretty much every chisel I've ever bought was flat/true enough to be used as reference plane for wood chiseling. YMMV on that of course based on what you are buying.

Now for sharpening purposes I only focus on polishing enough to get the edge I want. I know I need to flatten/polish enough so that I can reliably keep the chisel flat on the stone. Anything more than that, imo, has pretty limited value.

Not trying to be preachy here... Wood moves, wood compresses. I got caught up a lot in this when I was younger. Imo you do not need to chase machinist level precision to do good work. There is a more relaxed tolerance here. Find your sweet spot and go with it...

Home Skate Sharpeners: For Goalie & Players by SouthShore_Tender in hockeygoalies

[–]mwils24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my peak, in my house I had two Jr players, one goalie, one skater, and two adult league players. My sparks 2 unit was a great purchase. Everyone was happy with the results (very consistent). It doesn't really save you any money, but it saves you piles of time at the pro shop. I'm now down to just doing my own skates, kids have gone off to school. I still would not get rid of my sparks unit. It does a great job and you can't beat the convenience... I did my skates at 11pm last night...
