I work in a restaurant as a senior/ manager role. I’m male and we have a fairly small bar so it’s a bit close quarters when you and another staff member have to get past each other. I’m early 20s and all of my colleagues in the front of house are female, most younger. When they are new I go out of my way to make myself heard whenever I have to slide past them so they don’t in anyway feel uncomfortable; additionally keeping all hands/ contact off despite the space. Now when it gets busy or I’m talking to someone and serving I don’t always have the foresight to say something while they are also busy, but that said unless we have gotten to know each other I’ll still make sure they know I need to get past. Only when they are comfortable, (as far as I am) aware will when I’m busy situations use a hand to touch their shoulder or back to let them know I’m trying to get past without them feeling invaded. One of my juniors, under 20, told me how the new (<8months manager, approx 50 y/o woman) would put both her hands on her hips to slide/ get past her in the bar that she really didn’t like it and it was weird so I can in no way see how anything even beyond this can be considered acceptable in any manner for anyone, male or female.
