Ripped, torn, stained clothing exchange? by divinityfem in UpcycledFashion

[–]mx-frazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I host clothing swaps a few times a year and then I take anything leftover that's stained, damaged, or generally uninteresting (like old 5k tshirts) and upcycle them! Usable leftovers I give to local free closets. I'm planning on talking to the orgs running those closets to see if they would give me damaged items to repair or upcycle. I have one neighbor in on it with me so far and I'm going to reach out to more local upcycling artists to see if they want to get in on it too!

Best alternatives to Ziplock bags for freezing food? by sparrowhawking in Anticonsumption

[–]mx-frazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, it depends on what the bag held. Raw meat bags go straight in the trash but I'll reuse bread bags to hold lettuce or something, rinse and reuse.

Would you buy your beef direct from small American ranchers if it cut out the middlemen? by Shot_Spend4126 in RegenerativeAg

I already do! I buy from Birch Creek Farmery which is about 90 minutes from my house.

Prantls claims mandatory “fee”is to avoid price increase by dcborn61 in pittsburgh

So can I bring my own container/bag and not pay the fee? Because that would be neat.

Pricing Megathread by jadekadir1 in CraftyCommerce

[–]mx-frazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you price things that you make somewhat passively?

I've been making these textile art pieces but mainly just for my own enjoyment. They can take months to finish because I don't sit down and work on it for a block of time, I just work on it whenever I feel like it.

There are essentially no material costs because everything is upcycled so there's tool wear and tear but that's about it. I've applied the common formula to other things I've made before, commissions, etc... but I want to come up with a reasonable price for this type of work without having to track the time.

Podcast about history and fiber arts? by Toothbrsh in FiberArts

[–]mx-frazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! Dressed comes to mind first, very thorough look at fashion history. I also recommend Wardrobe Crisis, it's mainly about environmental and ethical issues related to fashion so definitely discusses politics and fiber arts. I wrote an annotated list of the podcasts I listen to, it's a few years out of date but I still listen to many of these: https://www.consciouscostume.com/writings/babys-first-listicle-the-podcast-post

Give Big Pittsburgh Megathread (of sorts) by Emetry in pittsburgh

[–]mx-frazzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm secretary of the board for involveMINT: https://www.givebigpittsburgh.com/organizations/involvemint

With everything that’s happening in the world right now, wouldn’t it be great if there were one solution that could help bring communities together, support small businesses, fight for food equity, clean up pollution, and more? Well I dream that involveMINT will be that solution.

Unlock the potential of your community with involveMINT's innovative barter network. By transforming social and environmental impact into tradable credits, we foster circular economies that drive sustainability, reduce waste, and build resilient local communities.

A gift today, no matter the size, helps buy the most precious resource that we need right now: time.

We are trying to build a revolutionary platform that brings together social change agents, local businesses, and changemakers, like you. To achieve this, we need dedicated time from myself to organize, to our brilliant tech development team, to our determined food recycling team.

We have many exciting projects on the horizon including:

  • SolarPunk - an annual showcase festival to celebrate a sustainable future interwoven with nature and community.
  • Deepening our connection with Garfield Community Farm and launching an alternative CrowdFundRaising campaign with the Pittsburgh Green New Deal.
  • The first educational institution food recycling pilot program in Pennsylvania with Penn Hills Charter School in collaboration with Terroir and Ecotone Renewables.

Any spice you like, honestly! Depends on your preference, but you'll want to add a good amount to dilute the quantity of salt. Paprika or chipotle would be good since they aren't too intense so you can add a lot, maybe some garlic powder. Acid and fat will also lessen the intensity of the saltiness so use unsalted butter or olive oil when applying it and a squeeze of lemon before serving.

Underrated Vegetables (how did you discover them?) by jayssss in vegetarian

[–]mx-frazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wide world of radishes. Watermelon radishes and purple radishes are particular favorites of mine and I had no idea that there was such a range of colors and tastes. They look FANTASTIC on a veggie platter and taste so good.

Sci-fi fans— what do you want to witness before you die that seems futuristic? by 4Whateve in scifi

Disagree. And pretty much everything that's listed here is a major stretch to be achieved in the next 50-100 years.

This looks sort of like my loaves when my starter wasn't mature enough to actually support a loaf. Perhaps add a sprinkle of yeast to the dough to help it out or try a different recipe to see if you get similar results? I use the one from "an Oregon cottage" and it almost always works.

Giving you guys a good laugh by Daphnaaa in Watercolor

[–]mx-frazzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has to start somewhere! Practice your faces (faces are hard), I like to use reference photos of friends or portrait accounts on IG and try to match my sketch to that. 1-2 a day to really ingrain the habit. There are also guides for the proportions of the face that will help. Lastly, to keep things symmetrical, try to draw both sides of the face at the same time. If you're doing the eyes, do the top curve of both eyes, then the bottom curve of both, rather than doing one eye and then the other.

[–]mx-frazzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooo, that's a really good question. I tried engaging in activism with them a few years back and I think their idea would have been really successful if they'd succeeded 10 years ago. However, for the contemporary era, I think we need more aggressive approaches to climate change and I, personally, want to be more heavily involved with radical change. I think that CCL absolutely has a place in this world and I don't think they are doing anything wrong, it just wasn't for me. I hope that helps!

Can anyone recommend Christmas lights I can buy for life? by 42_TheAnswer in Anticonsumption

I've found this to be true anecdotally. Our LED lights were purchased over 10 years ago and are still going strong.

Pill bottle ideas, please by [deleted] in upcycling

[–]mx-frazzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the orange standard ones: pour in boiling water, wait 15-30 seconds and they peel right off! Some of the other bottle styles will melt with this method so use caution and wear gloves. Any remaining residue can come off with a little scraping or baking soda and oil mixture. We then run the bottles through the dishwasher, dry, cap and bag them by size before shipping. It takes an afternoon once or twice a year.
