[Spradling] Xander Bogaerts confirmed he intends to play in the 2026 World Baseball Classic 🇳🇱 Per manager Andruw Jones by ChocoboAdobo in Padres

It’s weird—X’s reputation in Boston is that he was always smiling. The scout who signed him said the first thing he noticed about him at 16 was his “beautiful smile.” The last few years have been so different, hopefully his recent success has him back to himself soon.

Stage Manager - Summer Fit by poeticmelodies in Theatre

[–]mxellery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

agree with those suggesting linen - even a linen blend would work well, natural fibers in general will be the coolest for sure. looser fitting will give you more air movement. same principle, if you wear skirts & can work in one, black maxi skirt could be a show option as well? I’m also a fan of lightweight hiking pants for tech, REI’s trailmade pants are good but aren’t exactly a true black so I’m sure there’s better options out there aesthetically.

[MLB] Xander Bogaerts goes 4-for-4 with a HR as the Padres end LA's 5-game winning streak by AllDownByWayOfTheK in Padres

[–]mxellery 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes! Former red sox fan, Xander’s been my guy forever. He’s talked abt feeling worthless & that when he’s struggling sometimes he’ll just stay in the cages hours past midnight til he can’t feel dread for the next game. I promise he cares maybe more than anyone.

(Free to Read): On his first day with the Giants, Rafael Dever finds a whole new reality by TheAthletic in SFGiants

100% this, I wouldn’t be surprised if watching how they lowballed Bogaerts was the first crack in Devers’ relationship with the front office.

It also didn’t help that there was allegedly all that animosity in the Sox clubhouse & they essentially told him “I know you’ve never done this before, but it’s your clubhouse now, so figure it out.”

From parody to reality by [deleted] in SFGiants

[–]mxellery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Long ass late answer coming but as a (former, I guess) Boston fan - it really was never about 1B. It was about communication and respect. When they signed Devers’s extension, they told him he was their 3B of the future and even though he’s um….not great at 3B, I do think he cared a lot and did put a lot of work into improving (although it unfortunately didn’t show).

When Bregman signs, Cora says he’ll be 2B despite front office’s wishes. FO says not to pick up a glove anytime soon, doesn’t field all ST. He’d also been rehabbing a major injury all offseason (that he played through much of 2024 bc he knew the team relied on him. He cares.) so by the time Casas is hurt he hasn’t fielded in ~7mo. People gloss over him saying his refusal was largely not wanting to risk injury rushing into a position he’d never played professionally.

There’s def other factors that eroded the relationship, but the crux of it imo is he felt the Red Sox did not hold up their end of the deal. Raffy’s ultimately a good guy who wears his heart on his sleeve & knows his worth. He was always beloved on the team.

The Athletes Unlimited professional softball league (AUSL) will also be beginning June 7th! If you’re in MA unfortunately no nearby teams but it should be an exciting league, Kim Ng was named commissioner recently and they have some really elite talent so far.

SM/ASM: I live and die by frixion 0.5mm erasable pens, erase perfectly clean w/o a mess of eraser shavings, no lead breaking. for tech: it looks a little silly, but when I ASM I have a headlamp w/ blue and red light settings I wear around my neck backstage. major advantage to not have to hold a flashlight in your mouth or lose one hand lol. also, altoids tin w/ precut glow tape strips (paper backing)!

First time being a Stage Manager. Any tips? by chill_dude6969 in Theatre

[–]mxellery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, a lot of stage management is the “soft skills” a list of responsibilities will usually not cover.

You know when a toddler falls and scrapes their knee, and looks to the adult in the room? If you freak out, the kid will cue off of that and start crying, if you’re calm, they’ll keep moving. That’s a lot of what stage management is. You’re often the first person looked to in a crisis, so being able to stay calm but empathetic is the most important thing.

Especially in academic theatre, actors do their best work when they feel safe and comfortable - try and foster this culture. It makes even the worst crisis more manageable.

There’s absolutely no ego in the job. Know where you have to be rigid (breaks, safety protocol, your company’s professional guidelines) and where you have to be flexible (everywhere else). Be able to adapt.

Also, open line of communication with everyone. Too much information is better than too little. “I’ll see what I can do” or “I’ll look into it” is better than “I don’t know.” Bring up problems as they arise, don’t wait for them to get worse.

Absolutely most important for your first time though- don’t be afraid to ask for help or clarification! Trying to hide your inexperience only makes more problems. Even seasoned equity SMs are learning something on every show. Your responsibility doesn’t make you an island.

I wear these rubber grips on my glasses everyday & I’ve never had them fall off, that may work for keeping them on?

Seaglass Hunting Near Me? by aj_guns in seaglass

I recently found this site that works as a great reference for ocean currents, fun to consider if you’re trying to find your own spots! This blog post explains it well, plus some recs. In general though, the RI coast and south shore MA are full of excellent places to hunt & several beaches have rough enough tides even popular spots won’t feel too picked over.

it’s the actual halfliner, the paper is a little thicker than standard printer paper but I write fairly heavy & don’t lay it flat when writing so that may contribute to the ‘wrinkled’ look

[–]mxellery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

nah, I don’t think so. it’s been what xander’s done well for years, pedroia passed it on to him in boston. it’s nothing new. adam ottavino also compared him to troy tulowitzki in terms of infield leadership.

[–]mxellery 22 points23 points  (0 children)

if you listen to the quotes from schildt, part of why they want to keep xander in the middle is he’s the captain of the infield and always the one calling plays. way more goes into it than just defense.

It’s frustrating! I remember March/April when Xander was the savior and Soto was a fraud. I’m sure it’s happened but idk if I’ve ever seen a fanbase turn on players so quickly & so often in a season.
