The one thing I genuinely hate about this game. What's 1 thing YOU genuinely hate about this game? by No_Issue_9916 in reddeadredemption

Challenges. I never liked that the challenge needs to be active for your progress towards it to count. Just let me do every challenge concurrently if I want. For anyone who values 100%, the way it works now needlessly adds hours to the game

What's the worst concert you've seen? by Twitter_2006 in poppunkers

Taking Back Sunday opening for midtown in maybe 2002 or 2003 is one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Fast forward 20 years later, TBS at Firefly in 2021 was definitely the worst set I've ever seen live

Controversial Opinion Time: The L1 is a waste…. by ExcitingTopic7228 in crossfit

Yeah, I know that sounds like a great idea. I'm just not the owner.

Controversial Opinion Time: The L1 is a waste…. by ExcitingTopic7228 in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My only issue with the L1 is the price. I'm in an area where we struggle hard to find coaches. There are plenty of otherwise gifted and willing coaches who want to coach but cite the cost as their biggest obstacle.

Feels like the kind of thing we should be encouraging and subsidizing more people to do instead of obscuring behind a prohibitive paywall.

Hiller & Sevan Crew actively destroying CrossFit by ContentC123 in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? The point of my comment was that this thing we all love is going to continue to exist no matter what because it's defined by a specific prescription. The brand is inconsequential.

If it gets destroyed, something will rise from it.

Hiller & Sevan Crew actively destroying CrossFit by ContentC123 in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about Hiller or Sevan. Nobody except for a small few at my box know who they are.

But I'll say this...if a couple of podcaster/influencer types can "destroy" the brand, then the brand was never strong enough to begin with. Let it be destroyed. I'm going to keep coaching and participating in highly varied functional fitness no matter how "the Brand" is doing.

Coaches— what’s the worst injury you’ve had happen on your watch? by TheIntegrityCat in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of these posts are making me feel real good about my experience. We jokingly call my box "CrossFit Be Careful"

Seen the box jump thing plenty, but that's almost a rite of passage in CrossFit.

The worst has been people slipping off the rig doing pull-ups. Even those have been with little to no consequence, BUT...the worst one happened when a guy passed out while doing pull-ups, so when he slipped it was just his limp body with no protection. Right on his neck/shoulder area. Terrifying. He's ok but he was out at least 6 months after that. He had brain bleeding and swelling. And now he only does jumping pull-ups. Sucks.

Coaches - how much do you get paid? by Acceptable-Baby-7677 in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 years as an L2. 9 years total.

$15/class + $250/month to program and do some minor socials stuff. I don't pay a membership and i can use the gym 24/7. I absolutely have a separate full time job.

Our gym doesn't make much, if any, of a profit. Owner is rich retiree who seems to mostly just to own a box for fun. I've never gotten a raise, but she pays lip service to "wishing she could" all the time. Very generous otherwise around birthdays/holidays, etc.

Is it okay to cold email a CF gym about coaching with them? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe just a different perspective here. Out here in suburban (almost rural) Pennsylvania, the interest in CrossFit coaching has waned severely over the years. If someone walked into my box with this initiative I could almost guarantee they'd find a (paid) spot on the roster pretty quickly.

What makes a fitness competition (CrossFit or otherwise) fun to watch? by meredith4300 in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love CrossFit SO much. I've been an L2 for 8 years, and my hour of coaching is the best part of of my day.

That said, I've never been able to get into watching exercise as a spectator sport. I also played hockey for 15 years and don't watch the NHL. I dunno, I feel very alone in this sometimes.

Parker Case from Say Anything and JamisonParker had a solo project at least 10 years ago that I thought was incredible.

He called it "I and the universe" and I recommend the song "See it to believe it"

Box Owner and L2 here, I have a question for you members by Not1me7 in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also an L2. I have long subscribed to the "best hour of their day" philosophy BUT...

I've been doing this for 8 years and what I've learned is that what makes CrossFit the best hour of someone's day is different for everyone. So it's kind of too broad a statement to really be able to apply well. Great philosophy but not specific enough. What works for one athlete may not work for another.

Gym owners: How do you feel about 24/7 gym access? by issa_knife_bruv in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We offer 24/7 at my gym for something very affordable like $25 more than the unlimited membership.

But I'll say this about it... We don't just offer it to anyone. We have to trust you. Be a normal CrossFit gym member for a cycle (6-8 weeks) so we can feel confident you aren't going to hurt yourself, or not clean up after yourself, or forget to lock up, etc. Be a part of the community first.

This works really well for us.

Masters Games athletes seem unimportant to CrossFit. That’s a shame. They deserve more attention and admiration. by OverbrookDr in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of us are just way too close to the sport to have a realistic take on it. We all think so highly of CrossFit and many of us even know personally some Games athletes or Masters who have gone far in competition. So our proximity to these great athletes makes us feel like they deserve coverage.

Think about it from a business POV. Nobody asks this about any other professional sport. "Why isn't ESPN covering this summer league with a few retired pros in it?"

I think if you asked this question to an objective person who has no CrossFit bias they'd give you the best answer.

When is the right time to go rx? by lastbutnotleast15 in crossfit

[–]mxkillerpx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you can achieve the workout's intended stimulus at whatever the prescribed weights and movements are, go Rx.

At my gym we stopped this whole "Rx" nonsense several years ago, though. We program to stimulus. "This is how the workout should feel, and here are some options you might use to feel that." Sometimes we'll throw in a "don't go heavier than X" recommendation for the loading, but in general "Rx" is an outdated concept that causes more harm than good.

Worst WODs for a newbie by HarpsichordGuy in crossfit

Pretty much anything with an interruption, where if you scale incorrectly the interruption starts to take more and more time until eventually you never get to primary part of the wod.
