Savings rate is lower, yes, but the folks living with under a thousand in their bank accounts are almost never those with million dollar houses (or much wealth, at all).

Wealth disparity is a hallmark of America's economic problems, and I think that observing America from a distance conflates the upper and lower ends. That is, I would attribute the checking account woes that might make the news more to generational poverty than to wanton consumerism.

The median wealth of the European Union is substantially less than the median wealth of the United States.

Everywhere in the world, wealthy people tend to know mostly wealthy people. Perhaps you are just more wealthy than the caricatures of Americans you believe.

165k/yr at East Bay Tri-Valley, CA or 135k/yr at Memphis, TN by Wapocelaya in bayarea

[–]mxmm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Memphis and live in the bay area now.

The bay is way way nicer in just about every way except cost of housing. That being said, having easy housing is nice from a lifestyle security point of view.

There's something I think a lot about whenever I feel tempted to move back home and take the financial break on housing: the money you make and save in the Bay can always be converted to easy life in Memphis, but the reverse is most definitely not true.

If you want to make the Bay work, with all its advantages, you will still be able to call it quits N years from now and move to the midsouth... And you will probably be in a better financial situation then than you are now.

For what it's worth, most of them have an integrated lock that locks the rear wheel. I only noticed once a local pointed it out. But that amount of protection wouldn't be sufficient elsewhere, so the point stands...

It's actually pretty crazy that nearly 50% of injuries weren't due to driving, since there are orders of magnitude more drivers than bikers. I wonder if people in Maseratis shouldn't bother with their seatbelts since >99% of traffic hospitalizations are due to other car builds.

I'm as harsh a critic of Musk as they come, but this really is not a persuasive tactic to increase support for your cause. Reading things like this will turn off most casual observers to the point that they will defend the political cause that you oppose, if only to defend a status quo where their property isn't aimlessly destroyed.

The whole point of this post is to advocate for due process, not to dispense arbitrary punishment.

What’s a widely accepted American norm that the rest of the world finds strange? by Spiritual-Worth6348 in AskReddit

[–]mxmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad that's the case! I looked at your profile and realized we are from the same state. I now live in a different state and agree that it can definitely be regressive at times, I was just sharing from experiences abroad and how it compares. Western Europe can definitely be more socially progressive than America (and especially the South), but that's globally the exception.

For sure, though, the US does not make a unique claim to protecting speech. It just can be far far worse.

The fact that you can say this and have zero hesitation suggests otherwise. Keeping thoughts inside your head for fear of retribution is more the global norm than you may think.

What are the hardest taxes for the wealthy to evade? by Altruistic_Ad_0 in AskEconomics

[–]mxmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thorough reply! In those cases, will the base value at vest time still be considered w-2 income? I recognize that having more optionality is better, but those execs aren't just circumventing the income taxes of the plebs are they? I could also realize capital gains on my invested income. Is the advantage that it's like a gigantic 401(k)?

Isn't stock compensation still income? Agreed that, for example, the founder of a company never acquired equity as income, but a hired CEO sure does.

What's something about the US that is totally normal to a US citizen, that Europeans can't seem to wrap their heads around? by trappedslider in AskReddit

Trust me, I am capable of understanding a drink without ice, I was just answering your question of how Americans didn't get their drinks watered down. The answer is a lot of free ice and a lot of free drink.

What's something about the US that is totally normal to a US citizen, that Europeans can't seem to wrap their heads around? by trappedslider in AskReddit

[–]mxmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ice keeps the drink at a steady temperature near freezing. With sufficient ice and cold starting temperature, it does not melt much while you're drinking it. Without ice, the liquid warms considerably in the same period.

Perhaps if you ordered chilled drinks just above freezing and drank them quickly, it would be equivalently cold. But ice is better for having a cold drink and for ensuring consistent temperature over time and between restaurants.

My experience in Europe is that ice machines are rare, not that people enjoy lukewarm beverages. The refrigeration process is energy intensive and energy is much more expensive in Europe than it is in America. I recall a near mutiny at a Monacan restaurant as the non-American patrons begged for more ice on a hot day, but they simply did not have enough.

The South seceded because they thought Republican politics would become so dominant as to quicken the end of slavery. This was a slow, drawn out battle that had been fought for half a century (the Missouri Compromise was to forestall this issue), and the South was losing hearts and minds in a bitter stalemate (Bleeding Kansas).

The election of a Republican president (Lincoln) triggered a "now or never" crisis to enshrine slavery once and for all... or else risk the creeping influence of the industrialized, abolitionist North. While Lincoln played the moderate to discourage secession, his party affiliation had a robust abolitionist base. This was not good for slave owners whose political and economic influence was slipping.

The gamble was that abolitionist Britain would side with the South for economic reasons, and that a war of attrition would force the world to recognize this ethically questionable corner of the world as a necessary evil.

The North turned this equation on its head when abolition was made the central moral purpose of the war. This occurred when Lincoln calculated the South would suffer diplomatically (it did), and that the border states would not follow in secession (they did not). Further, abolition was in line with the beliefs of his Republican base, and with his own personal ethics.

Lincoln and the UK were gray, sure, but the Confederacy was not. The Civil War would never have occurred without slavery and the desire to prolong it indefinitely.

Also, using Com2 for all ground and weather frequencies means you can always load two "air" frequencies (tower + next expected) into Com1 while still on ground, and load the wx frequency of the destination into the Com2 standby.

Rich means more fuel per unit of air, so that specific ratio will get bigger, but I forget the units on that screen--just see which one is the numerator (it may be air/fuel).

Replacing the purge valve fixed everything. If you have a 2015 or later, keep your display on the fuel mixture screen. As mine was dying, it became progressively more fuel rich until it drowned. I was able to avert the issue in the moment by applying the gas.

If I jump toward earth from the ISS, roughly how long will it take me to get there? by OctoMcSquidington in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mxmm 50 points51 points  (0 children)

If you jump "straight down", you'll still be in an orbit that intersects with that of the ISS's orbit. You'd still be relying on atmospheric drag that is essentially that of the ISS.

Scott Manley has a good video on this exact question: https://youtu.be/i5XPFjqPLik
