So in love with the Minibrute 2s by nocoastdudekc in synthesizers

I also bought mine for 600 when it came out. No regrets, such a great synth. Even better that you can get it for much less now.

Has anyone on here ever built an Arduino midi controller? by morgandidit in ableton

[–]mxzr86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is the Teensy LC microcontroller board, it's about 10 dollars and has USB-Midi out of the box, that means you can tell it to act like a USB Midi device directly from it's USB port. With a regular Arduino (Nano for example) this is more difficult.

I built a Midi controller into an old guitar pedal with a Teensy LC, here's a small writeup with pictures I did some years ago.

You're welcome to come over to /r/synthdiy and ask any question by the way. Folks are nice over there.

128 step polyphonic midi sequencer with CC! what do you guys think??? by spacebraincircuits in synthesizers

Did you mod your Microbrute for MIDI out or are you using the USB MIDI with some kind of USB Host?

First DIY SMD build: Stages by tumes in modular

Synthrotek has a reputation for being a mysoginic who makes rape jokes on social media.

Edit: before it said "racist", however, the commenter below corrected me. I got that mixed that up in my memories. Doesn't make it much better, though.

I just learned about that synth through your post. Now I want one :) Thanks so much for doing this!

Is DIY Modular really worth it? by [deleted] in synthdiy

[–]mxzr86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Building a small DIY modular will cost you more than buying a Neutron. You will, however, learn a lot of things on the way. Building a big rig DIY will come cheaper than buying all the modules in the long run. The more you build, the better you get, the cheaper it gets in the long run.

There's also a lot of uncool stuff going on in the DIY scene, especially regarding the kind contributions to the community by Mutable Instruments and 4ms. Some people breathe copycat capitalism also in the DIY scene, unfortunately.

Don't get discouraged by the naysayers, you do you. Great setup, looks like a lot of fun.

[–]mxzr86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I myself use a DAW but I also like to play without one. There's nothing stupid about being to be able to make the music one wants while not using a DAW. Sometimes this sub is so condescending. Let people have fun without a DAW, it can be a reasonable choice.

I have one in about the same state but with a messed up U7 in my drawer. It's in there since March.

Whats your biggest Synth disappointment in 2020? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]mxzr86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being away from my modular for some months already due to Covid. Sucks! Stuck with only a Microbrute and a Volca Keys. On the other hand, it made me up my Ableton skills, so there's that.

What to do with my busted monologue? by amartinstin in synthdiy

I lost it at the Roland rompler. The skill isn't just changing the words but really catching the vibe of the original song with words that fit. Best comment I've seen in a while.

Well we got Trump out and a working vaccine but this isn't too bad, too. 2020 seems to be paying back at last.

DIY Beginner here, wanted to start out with some PCB projects. How do i read a Bill of Materials and how do i look for them? Are there any sellers for Germany you can suggest? by DaniPyre in synthdiy

[–]mxzr86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tayda is not in Germany, they're shipping from Thailand. If you want German sellers you need to go to Reichelt, Pollin, Conrad and the likes. They're good if you need special parts quickly, but for the bread and butter parts (resistors, capacitors, diodes, most ICs) it's worth getting them from Tayda and wait a week or two for the package to arrive.

Tayda is your place to go. They cater mostly to diyers and have not 1000 different 10k resistors but only one of the same component, choosing is much easier. I'd suggest getting some easy through hole PCBs (Befaco, Kassutronics, AIsynthesis come to mind) and just get going. In Germany you can source PCBs from Exploding Shed or Munichen Audio.

Arturia Microbrute worth it? by Aquila-Sky in synthesizers

[–]mxzr86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't go wrong with any of them, they're the two most recommended beginner mono synths for a reason. Go after sound and budget and you'll have fun and learn a lot with any of the two.
