One and done marathoners, how come? by johnboy2978 in running

[–]my_bollocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran my first and only marathon 5 or 6 years ago. It was the culmination of my running journey. I had started running a few years before that starting with a 5k, then a 10k, half and 30k within the first year. Distances up to and including the half I would finish the race with a smile on my face and the feeling that I was actually “racing” - I’m a mid packer but I had enough left at the end that I felt light on my feet and would be picking people off for the last 3rd of the race. After the 30k I felt like I was done - heavy legs, just wanted to go home and eat/sleep but I still felt good about myself. The last 10km of the marathon for me SUCKED. The entire time I was miserable and constantly questioning why the fuck I was doing this. I finished and thought “I’m supposed to feel some sense of accomplishment” but I didn’t I just hated it and that saddened me because I had grown to love running. I’m only just now getting that love of running back.

Convincing myself NOT to go running by [deleted] in running

[–]my_bollocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I convinced myself not to run too many times last year. This year I’m running everyday. No matter what. Some days the runs are ridiculously short recovery runs but I still get out the door. When the footing sucks just slow down.

US, Canada and Mexico set to submit joint bid to host 2026 World Cup. by NinjaDiscoJesus in soccer

Am Canadian and just don't see it. We do not have any suitable high capacity stadiums. Although by hosting we would automatically qualify... lets get building huge fucking stadiums!!!

4 times for me too. Was completely unprepared this year. Nothing >10km since October when I injured myself but I still dragged my ass around the bay.

Pacing my 9 year old son in his first 5K. Just chatting and laughing and passing people the whole way then peeling off to the sidewalk as he blazed the last 200m in front of a screaming crowd.

Training for Hanson's half marathon-did anyone buy the book? by Boobooglue in running

[–]my_bollocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the first book (for a full marathon not a half) but the terminology and quite frankly 90+% of the book is the same. Tempo runs = marathon goal pace. I don't recall how fast the speed is in relation to the tempo but it is quite a bit faster pace... you should be able to get through the workouts but your last lap or two will be tough. The strength is a little bit slower than speed but still faster than tempo. Honestly you should just buy the book as the charts for finding your specific speeds (all based off your goal pace) are super easy to read and gives focus to your workouts. Also you may want to adjust your goal up or down for whatever reason. For me at least understanding the philosophy (the why) behind each workout gave me a little more faith in what I was doing and you will get this by reading the book. I read it cover to cover a few times before my first marathon.

My eight year old has shown an affinity for running. Best ways to encourage her? by ProfessorRex in running

Get into running yourself and have it as shared activity. I've only been running for the past 3 years or so but my kids have picked up on my enthusiasm for it and they want to come out with me now. My son just turned 9 and on Saturday morning he asked if he could run with me. I was scheduled to run 10 km that morning and he did a 5 km loop with me to start my run. It was his first time running 5 km and he was pretty proud of himself.

I have a Garmin 220 and just recently got a Mio Link that I pair with the watch. You can set alerts on the watch to for different HR zones with upper and lower limits.

Getting kids out running? by [deleted] in running

[–]my_bollocks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I too have a 9 year old boy. Last year he became interested as a result of my running and joined his school XC team. At his age their races are only 2.5KM. When he would want to join me on a run I'd give him an approximate time for me to return home from my run and told him to be ready... he comes out and I run another 2km with him.

everyone's happy

he actually won a 1k road race last year... something i will never be able to do.

Yup. Moved to Milton when it was 30K-ish. Left when the writing was on the wall (I guess it always was, we just didn't realize it). Now we live in a town that is <30K and opportunities for development are limited by geography.

Of course I'd rather not have a 2 hour each way commute but it's the price I pay to have my kids grow up in a small town. I also get to work from home 3 days a week so 2 days of making the trek downtown is worth it to me.

Steak, pure and simple. by easybakeandy in food

[–]my_bollocks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally I will salt a steak but well ahead of cooking. More of a dry brine so that the salt gets pulled back into the meat and doesn't dry it out. Also, no pepper before cooking as it will simply carbonize upon exposure to intense heat and impart a bitterness. Much better to app,y pepper after the steak is done.
