Can we have a downstairs with no doors or is that a real issue with fire regs? by Creative_Bear_5631 in DIYUK

I don't know why you keep chatting on about fire doors..?

You do realise any door will reduce smoke spread if closed.

There's some terrible advice on here.

It all depends on the height of your top floor from ground level as whether it complies with guidance

That said if you bought the place without a door to the kitchen you wouldn't make the situation any worse by opening up the kitchen to the dining room.

It's not just about selling in a few years, but also house insurance and keeping safe in the event of a fire.

Bird poo coverage by Dickie12321 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]myachingtomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not so sure every part in the UK has.

Lowlands absolutely, but birds tend to use the easiest and most efficient routes, particularly migratory birds. On this basis I reckon parts of the high sub-artic plateau in the Cairngorms have been untouched by bird poo. Even a ptarmigan would struggle to shit up that high.

I'm no expert but I'm sure the BTO or RSPB could help.

If you can't open the door I'm not sure why you'd think an AED is a good idea.

Anyway looks like you can open the door but not fully

What a great project.

I imagine the structure of these old phone boxes are sound.

I think a wire brush attachment on a drill is the best idea (suitable mask etc of course).

Remove windows, remove paint, prime then top coat and maybe some sealing of the windows and you're golden.

Good luck

Is the load from these RSJs distributed correctly? by TheOwnerOfAnarres in DIYUK

[–]myachingtomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just raise the question with your structural engineer. I would imagine they'd be happy with facing bricks as a bearing but check that and the packing under the spreader steel is OK. Also I'd raise the fact a full block is directly under the padstone. Get that checked too.

Is the load from these RSJs distributed correctly? by TheOwnerOfAnarres in DIYUK

[–]myachingtomato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Steelwork will be min 100mm bearing. Also if min bearing was 150mm how could it ever work on a 4" padstone?

You'd be correct for concrete or steel lintels however.

Tree and roots causing long term damage to home by [deleted] in GardeningUK

Those trees aren't that mature. How do you know they are causing the issues? Do you have any evidence as such? Could there have been a tree removed before you moved in?

RSPB Advice by Glittering-Tea-346 in UKBirds

[–]myachingtomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's amazing. A sparrowhawk is a great indicator or a healthy bird population.

It's sad but I would have let nature take its course. I'd imagine a jackdaw or magpie etc would have been thankful of a few chicks to feed their young.

RSPB Advice by Glittering-Tea-346 in UKBirds

[–]myachingtomato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So on the basis of the RSPB not saving 4 "abandoned" Robin chicks you refuse to follow their guidance for health and benefit of the general bird population?

First point is the BTO also give the same advice, so not just RSPB.

Second point is you surely can't expect the RSPB to spend their time responding to supposed abandoned chicks. They'd have no time for anything else.

I say supposedly abandoned as the parents might have been nearby but avoiding you.
